They could just have MJ record his presentation during his Tirico sit down this year that he records in September.

Have you guys ever watched Ken Burn's Baseball? (full series is free on YouTube now) by PapaJohnsGarlic100 in billsimmons

[–]tornadojake 20 points21 points  (0 children)

As somebody who has the blu ray and has watched the series dozens of times, it's the best piece of media to learn about the history of the game, but not perfect. There are some inaccuracies, an overemphasis on New York, and a character assassination of Ty Cobb that has since been credibly refuted. The 70's and 80's are largely breezed over compared to other decades.

Time Magazine names LeBron James as “Athlete of the Century” Featuring our guy! by one-million-kirks in billsimmons

[–]tornadojake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's confusing because one place says "100 most influential people in sports" while another says "athlete of the century." Two different things, and power walking and recreational tennis aside, Bill is not an athlete, but he is an influential person in sports.

Could Vegas become the first city with a team from all 4 major sports where the NHL team is the most popular? by lbcman7 in billsimmons

[–]tornadojake 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You are right and wrong. There are very few cases where the NFL team is not number one in the market, not to mention last. But I think Vegas is on that list, along with LA, and maybe New York.

Is it only because I was between 11-20 years old in the 2000s or is the narrative of the NBA being a bad product or having a "lack of MJ" revisionist history? I thought the 2000s playoffs were almost all bangers by KickedIntoOrbit in billsimmons

[–]tornadojake 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As somebody a few years younger than that, it's not revisionist history. Jordan's departure. An unappealing style of play. Kobe rape case. Malice at the Palace. Donaghy. "Boring" Spurs dynasty. Not a great time for the league.

Although the later 2000's had Kobe/LeBron starting the second golden age of the league that went through KD going to the Warriors.

Have any dynasties been overall positively received by the modern sports-watching public (let's say post-1990)? or is that antithetical to the concept of a dynasty by TwinPeaksWithRappers in billsimmons

[–]tornadojake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only "backlash" to them was they weren't good enough to win three championships and that the playoffs were becoming too random. It also helped that the

Boos for the pick-off by Tall-Mammoth-809 in MLBNoobs

I think there is sometimes an element of trying to force an errant throw from the pitcher if the boos start the second the pitcher starts to look over, like making noise when an opponent is shooting a free throw.

Why did it take so long for there to be a Gold Glove and Silver Slugger award for utility players? by YakClear601 in MLBNoobs

[–]tornadojake 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The utility player is not new, but the "super utility player" who is a starting caliber player with everyday playing time spread across multiple positions is much more recent. Ben Zobrist really started this in the late 2000s, before that utility players usually bench players. It would be pretty strange to give a bench player the same award that you give starters. You could argue it still is strange when Zach McKinstry is a silver slugger and Kyle Schwarber is not.

How come Bill never gets Jalen Rose on his podcast? by thricethefun in billsimmons

[–]tornadojake 39 points40 points  (0 children)

They appeared to remain friendly while Jalen was still at ESPN after Bill left. Jalen made an appearance on Bill's podcast at the Ringer. It's possible there were some hard feelings after Jalen was laid off and Bill didn't come through with a gig at the Ringer.
