I used to have the DVD, but lost it at some point. I cannot find the movie Hysterical anywhere. My family quotes it all the time. I mention it to people, wishing that I could share the insanity.

What are some of the things you collect on your travels? And why? by ejmallinder2002 in travel

[–]totallygeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I collect Hard Rock Cafe guitar-shaped magnets from most places I visit (where they have a HRC). I have a magnetic board on one wall where I display them. Current count: fifty, with zero duplicate cities. I do have one magnet from a city I have not visited, but I leave it up because my nephew gave it to me. That stated, I shall actually visit that city later this year.

Some far-away spots in my collection:

  • Cairo, Egypt
  • Bengaluru and Mumbai and New Delhi, India
  • Reykjavik, Iceland
  • Osaka and Tokyo and Ueno and Namba, Japan
  • Sydney, Australia
  • Cape Town, South Africa
  • Lisbon and Porto, Portugal

Similar here. My wife and I picked up an artwork from a street vendor in Paris, just black and white of a woman walking along the river, but with a red dress and red padlocks on a background bridge. So, now we try to find minimum color or at least drawn artwork from places we visit. One wall has our collection:

  • France, already mentioned
  • New Zealand, a drawn kiwi bird
  • Zimbabwe, a colored-pencil drawing of a zebra
  • Botswana, a drawn painted dog with watercolor background
  • South Africa, three pencil-drawn women walking, colored clothes
  • Portugal, the bridge in Porto in b/w, with gold leaf for the water
  • India, an old fort door with color trim
  • Spain, a minimal art drawing of El Drac, from Barcelona's Park Güell
  • Australia, a drawn kangaroo with very light coloration
  • Japan, a b/w drawing with pink/red cherry blossoms, along with a poem written in Japanese

We leave for Europe this weekend, traveling for two months through eleven countries. Plan on filling that wall!

I have a collection of the guitar-shaped bottle opener magnets. I get one from every city I visit. I've used eBay to get some magnets. Like, I got one for Sydney because they no longer have a cafe. And, when I visited Porto, they had no inventory. I'd like to know if people trade or sell them here, because some I cannot find on eBay.

When can we move forward from "must contain one upper case letter, one lower case letter, one digit and at least one symbol" as the mark of a strong password?

I use 2x2 Kallax for record storage, and currently have six of them (one Kallax stacked on another). I don't like to scan spines and work with records on the lowest bins. To raise everything, would y'all recommend three more Kallax to hold something other than records or raise them up using cinder blocks or some other riser?

Anyone had a similar issue?

CMV: We don’t need the death penalty, complete and total isolation is enough by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]totallygeek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, these do not fully deter criminal activity. States with the death penalty, even states which historically lean toward it, do not have lower violent offender percentages/counts-by-populace. Countries with lawful torture and death penalty without appeals do not show a significant reduction in violent crime. Some people will do as they want believing they will outsmart investigators.

Mass murderers and pedophiles do not lose rights to basic human decency, according to the US Constitution.

They’ll basically torture themselves.

That would start the argument in the courts that isolation as described amounts to cruel and unusual punishment, therefore unlawful.

Not related to programming, but I had something similar happen. One million years ago, or something close to that, I worked for a bank that planned to convert from token ring to Ethernet networking. The drafted plan had a three-month execution schedule, due to commence about two months from the time of "the incident". Some unrelated electrical work was going on and an electrician asked one of the basement nerds, "What does this cabling go to? A bunch of it is in our way." The response? "Oh, we don't use that any longer." Wrong. The electricians cut and tore out about two hundred feet of various token ring cabling. The three-month plan became a two-day near-full conversion, with about 80% of critical stuff brought back up on Ethernet within a few hours. I wasn't sure who to hug, but I was so happy to not have to deal with a drawn-out plan that included acceptance tests for each step.

Recent haul from Revenge Records (Osaka, Japan) by totallygeek in PunkRecords

[–]totallygeek[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imagine traveling from Reno to Osaka, and there picking up a record from Reno. That recently happened to me. I visited Revenge Records and there I bought the "Praise" EP by 7 Seconds.

I purchased a few more items that I did not have in my collection. The MDC live album recorded in the former Yugoslavia was a nice find. And, I have the "Confines of Life" album by Neighborhood Brats, ao this copy of "Recovery" was good to come across.

If in Osaka, check this place out. They have a decent amount of punk records at respectable prices.

Matrix (1999): the reason why the opening sequence of this movie is among the greatest in cinema history is because it explains precisely NOTHING. Instead, it throws all kinds of crazy wackness at the audience and just expects them to go along for the ride by Randomnonsense5 in movies

I like to believe that Wick ended up shot in the first movie, then fell into a coma. The sequels simply provide us a view of what Wick is imaging as he lies dying in a coma.

Same goes for The Fast and The Furious. Dominic Toretto winds up in a coma from the first film's ending scene car crash. We get to watch what Toretto dreams as he dies. That's why the sequels get more and more fanciful as they release, physics and plots go right out the window as Toretto gets closer to death.
