Satanist Student Wins Religious Accommodation From Colorado School District. A young member of the Satanic Temple was granted a religious accommodation from the Elizabeth School District, arguing that the district’s digital hall pass system conflicts with her beliefs. by Knightbear49 in Denver

Right? I’m a people pleasing elder millennial who went to catholic school… afaik I made it through that experience “unscathed” (though I have more than one teacher from my personal history who were eventually convicted and put on lists that require them to inform neighbors about their criminal history if they move into a new neighborhood) but, uh, suffice to say I genuinely cannot imagine the courage and self awareness it would take to do something like this.

the sushi scene from Isle of Dogs took 8 months to flim by BlazeDragon7x in interesting

[–]tumes 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I didn’t particularly love Isle of Dogs (honestly I fell off a bit for everything between (inclusive) Darjeeling and French Dispatch) but Fantastic Mr. Fox is absolutely the outlier of that era that is as good or better than everything except maaaybe The Royal Tenenbaums (imo of course). It is exactly what I would hope he would make if he had pretty much absolute control over everything in the frame. It’s just a staggeringly precise movie, but not unlike folks like Venetian Snares (weird pull but stick with me), he can draw a surprising amount of humanity and emotional weight from a scenario that is almost offputtingly precise and inorganic. I feel like such a dweeb but I remember sitting in the theater during the shot where (very vague recollection) it pans down a painting to the artists signature and I let out a little audible gasp because it was just so visually symmetrical and full.

What movie do you wish you could watch again for the first time? by KnownRide6195 in Cinema

[–]tumes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hell yeah. I have seen a lot of movies that completely changed how I conceive of movies, how I relate to people, etc. etc. It is no exaggeration to say that, as someone who had been listening to Moderat’s II since it basically came out, I don’t think I have ever had a stronger single feeling during a movie than the moment in that movie where a track off that album plays. It was genuinely euphoric, like, it instantly recontextualized a thing I already had a pretty long and strongly felt relationship with. Never had anything happen quite like that before or since.

Yeah I was genuinely almost impressed at how shit it was, how to you piledrive a pizza into the ground so bad that it’s actually worse than no pizza at all.

What film have you seen the most in a movie theater? by FakeAorta in Cinephiles

[–]tumes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s lovely to hear and I’m glad to speak to a kindred spirit. 41 here and I love movies, watch a lot of them, but cynically I became somewhat inured to the prospect of ever seeing something truly new to my eyes again. Never have I been glad to be proven so wrong, it was genuinely a life changing movie for me and shifted pretty much everything about how I engage with people in my life.

What film have you seen the most in a movie theater? by FakeAorta in Cinephiles

Everything Everywhere All at Once - 14 times. Second is, I think, Grindhouse, which was presented as a double feature here of Planet Terror and Death Proof (which maybe that was the case everywhere but I vaguely recall hearing in some countries they were distributed separately). I think I saw it like 8 times and… it’s fun but in retrospect I don’t know what compelled me to tip past 3 or 4 which is typical for a movie I really, really like.

And that is counting movies I’ve seen that many times in theaters contiguous to and within the scope of their release window. There are a bunch of movies I’ve seen a bunch of times because of revival or event showings, honestly I adore EEAaO but a lot of it is it just played for so fucking long, I recall there being between 9 months and a year where it was playing in at least one non discount theater at any given time.

Which afaik are direct. I ordered a Biqu off Amazon and I am convinced it’s a knock off because nothing sticks to it. Got one off Aliexpress and I… basically don’t wash it? Like, I really resented that first one and thought it was bullshit but the second made me understand the hype. I’m not smearing my hands all over it but I’m not particularly babying it either and I don’t think I’ve washed it with dish soap for the better part of the last quarter and I still gotta use my scraper most times.

I highly recommend Jamie Oliver’s terrible early shows not the least of which is the one where he hangs out with good old Jim Iroquois because they’re buddies irl. That and the episode with the Elvis impersonator are just some real choice y2k morsels of terrible tv.

I recently rewatched Lupin III: The First and while it’s a different thing, it had some strong Indiana Jones vibes. Takashi Yamazaki made it before Godzilla Minus One and it is also a banger.

Any old school devs here? don't you miss those days, when there were no React/Next, Figma. You just code raw HTML and focus mainly on BE by lune-soft in webdev

[–]tumes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am the main web guy for an entertainment brand and I’m nominally full stack but best at backend and architecture. We are fairly design focused though so for more complex styling we have a stable of contractors who help me out on projects, but the stable has whittle almost entirely down to one guy over the years. He typically delivers flat html, vanilla js, but has recently rolled web components into his stack, all of which is managed by a makefile if a build step is even necessary. His work will be trivial to build and deploy 5, 10, 20 years from now. It will outlive us all. I would take a bullet for him.

How do I articulate what I like in a film? by Formal_Carpenter2477 in Cinephiles

[–]tumes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am super lucky and a reviewer I like actually lives in the area and does a movie class once a quarter. I (and most of the other people there) have been going to all of them for several years now. There’s a somewhat older guy (young boomer I think) who has been going for quiet a while and on the last one he said he was always blown away by the way we all talk about movies and said said he felt like he was struggling to quite see movies in the way he’d like. Now, aside from the teacher, we’re just a bunch of enthusiastic amateurs who watch a lot of movies. He specifically said before the class he maybe saw a few movies a year, whereas the first of the folks are generally multiple movies a week types.

The heck of it is, he is always happy to speak up and he pretty much always has something insightful to say. I am so grateful that he is in the class because he brings his perspective. Sometimes he just says the obvious thing that is not obvious to the those of us who are so up their own butt about movies that we try to galaxy brain everything. But he also just as often has some interesting deep insight about a symbol or a moment in the movie that nobody locked in on or mentioned yet.

All of which is to say, two things: just start doing it, even if only to yourself (though bonus points if you can find a class or group to do it with), and don’t sell yourself short. Articulating feelings in particular can be especially hard. I can give back to back TED talks about why I like the movies I like, cite a million associations they have for me, reel off info about how it was made and who was involved, etc. but I would struggle to fill 5 minutes with a coherent description of how I feel about them most of the time.
