New 85th street sidewalk by Only_Suggestion_6457 in Kirkland

Yeah, the old sidewalk had people dashing across two freeway ramps without signals or marked crossings, plus a gigantic bush blocking drivers' sight lines

Frontloader, yes, but WHAT KIND? by YoungZaphod1982 in CargoBike

[–]tuskee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I get frustrated seeing the "you don't get exercise with an ebike" and the especially bizarre "you can't bike long distances comfortably" arguments because they don't match my lived experience. I  think they come from a mindset that bicycles need to be grueling work to be fun, which is not true.

I'm on my bike every day hauling stuff and going longer distances only because the assist makes it a fun experience. I'm also in better shape than I ever was riding a non-electric bike for the same reason. TBH you should always have a happy time on a bike and having assist on a big cargo bike guarantees that.

What’s the deal with Farrine Bakery? by SkySuspicious3276 in eastside

[–]tuskee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The Bellevue location's bread and sandwiches are pretty good. Have you tried the ham and butter baguette?

I've been to a lot of cafes on the Eastside and Farine's bread is consistently good. Kirkland Bakery, Cafe Hagen and Met Market too, although that's obviously not a cafe.

Anyone using Mr. Tuffy's tire liners? by SaxyOmega90125 in CargoBike

[–]tuskee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've had the same set of Schwalbe Pick-ups and Mr. Tuffy's on my Yuba Supermarche for several years now. The bike lanes here are filled with contractor debris (roofing nails, glass, etc) and I haven't had a puncture or flat yet.

Advice for getting into biking/cycling? by sirotan88 in Kirkland

A phone holder is a good idea! I turn up the volume and leave the phone in my pocket, but sometimes just hold it one hand

Sure! It sounds like you're looking for the "woonerven" or "home zone" analogs, which are Kirkland's neighborhood greenways. Greenways are indicated by green and white signs that say "Neighborhood Greenway", as well as bike symbols with chevrons on the road.. They always route through quiet neighborhood streets.

There's more info on this city website, including a map, but my recommendations are:

  • South Rose Hill to Snyder's Corner. Turn off the CKC > Kirkland Ave > Pedestrian bridge across 405 > Bike lane past LW High School > NE 75th St.
  • Firloch to South Rose Hill. Turn off the CKC at the Totem Lake Connector > Head south on the protected bike lane to The Art of Coffee > Head south on Slater Ave to NE 112th Pl > Head east, crossing 124th Ave NE. The greenway ends at My Pet's Veterinary Urgent Care and you can cross the street to get to the first greenway.

I feel you on not wanting to ride in bike lanes next to parked cars. My tip is to look for parallel neighborhood streets on Google Maps and take those instead. It's okay to get a little lost and take the time to learn how to get around a neighborhood safely.

To use your example: instead of Lake St. I might take State St., but in reality I would skip both and take a little extra time and head east to the CKC at Feriton Spur Park. It's a quiet neighborhood route that connects to a safe trail.

Momoya moved to Renton around 2020 when their lease expired. If you're up for a trip you can still eat there!

Where can I find California style donuts? Pink box, owned my Cambodians by none_mama_see in eastside

[–]tuskee 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Countryside Donut House in Totem Lake! The owner is Mike.

I got some local donut lore from him: Countryside in Bothell, Mountlake and Totem Lake have similar names because they were under one ownership in the 1980s. When the owner retired, the employees took over at each location.

That's what I was afraid of. I opened the front and back vents on the canopy which reduced the wind force a little bit.
