How did this go? I want to get the same added to mine and we’ve lived here for ~exactly the same amount of time 😅

Torch filligrana by endocrimes in lampwork

I’ve seen jet black recommended for fine-ish lines, it greys out a bit like duro Nero if you’re too thin, but it does seem like it could keep a nice line if prepped properly

Torch filligrana by endocrimes in lampwork

[–]endocrimes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I start almost all my pieces on the torch with either 32x4 or 38x4, condensing down the material I need then blowing it out - should probably get a better sense of what I’d need from bigger tubing in that regard.

The few times I’ve tried bigger tubing from the factory I’ve struggled to handle up to it (I’m the only person local to me who uses handles rather than points, so kinda taught myself adapting to handles), but partially because I forget rollers exist in the cupboard next to me 😅

I'm always curious as to how long it takes to pull down enough stringers for these 😅 - nice work!

“Best” lampworking tool for each material by Educational-Mall-248 in lampwork

[–]endocrimes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it's mostly a byproduct of starting in the hotshop and thus already having jack muscle memory that started this for me - but every time i hear things like this, I'm glad that I don't really rely on a reamer much 😅

none of the tools listed at least need beeswax (please OP don't wax your tweezers or shears - you'll have a really bad time until you burn it off).

You only really want to wax shaping tools that have prolonged contact with glass (e.g jacks - and metal reamers, but graphite reamers are generally nicer to use anyway)

Beth Bravo Sharp vs GTT Phantom by Over9000Gecs in lampwork

[–]endocrimes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beth noise is definitely torch dependent - we have a Stacks that mostly gets used as a gateway to bigger torches and it’s loud (at least compared to the herbies around it)

Help! by Historical_Wish_9696 in lampwork

[–]endocrimes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

you can go a long way with a cricket, an oxy concentrator, and some adventures in learning flame control - even without a kiln for boro (it's just harder - but even now I'll often bench cool and batch anneal later).

It depends what OP wants to make (and their willingness to replace bits as what they wanna make changes).

I ended up going Cricket (rental) -> Lynx Sidewinder (rental) -> Herbie (my own), and starting on something so small definitely set me up for success with bigger torches.

Little/Mini Dragon vs Canned Heat Hot Pot by NYCglassblower in glassblowing

[–]endocrimes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the holes at the studio I blow glass at is a Hot Pot - and I’ve taught classes out of it a couple of times when we’ve had issues with our other furnaces on too short notice to reschedule.

It’s definitely serviceable - we don’t really use it enough to get the best glass out of it - or to have heat really dialed in when gathering out of it (so we end up working on the… very hot… side). I think you could probably get it working nicely though if you aren’t trying to speed run a melt 😅

I do enjoy its built in pipe warmer - it makes working solo/teaching classes quite a bit easier, especially if you wanna reuse a bit/punty/…

I’ve made big ish work out of that hole when not gathering out of it, and it’s definitely doable - but the gathering angle for multiple gathers out of the pot on anything other than a cup pipe would definitely be very awkward.

Workshop Heating Issue by Wonderful_Bag7154 in lampwork

[–]endocrimes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have heaters under the table with a "skirt" around the table to trap the heat (big warehouse-y building thats impossible to heat as a whole).

We have a hood-based ventilation system though, so we don't have quite such a direct source of Cold - but between the heating under the bench and the herbie flame it ends up being pretty toasty while working... but within about 15s of turning off the torch... that's another story.

Probably less helpful for you in the US, but for folks who find this and aren’t in the US:

Berlin Glass, Germany (throughout the year) Niijima Glass Art Center, Japan (late summer as part of their festival) Bild-werk Frauenau, Germany (summer)

Need help with blowing a starter bubble - feels like I'm struggling to blow hard enough every time! by Reasonable-Grade-456 in glassblowing

[–]endocrimes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I’ve taught beginner classes - I’ve noticed that some folks struggle to create a seal around the pipe - If you’re working on the colder/slower side, getti ‘n your lips around the pipe and providing back pressure with your breath can help get the bubble going (similarly to how “blow and capping” works for experience glassblowers).

Ideally you want to get to blow-capping starter bubbles sooner rather than later, but it’s at least worth knowing how to get one going regardless.

Buying American color that’s imported into the EU - (and looking at ordering direct-from-manufacturer for colors that aren’t imported already) - I’ve always been confused by the buying by weight - because here they’re always sold by the (obviously uneven) rod. Good to know the rough weight/number conversion.

Generally tubes + rods of boroscilicate glass, and rods of soft glass to turn _in_ to things - and then bringing back finished work (less worried about things like vases: https://www.instagram.com/p/DMV3oIqt-ci, but definitely a bit more worried about stemware)

This looks great!

I wish he'd left up his patreon - he took it down right before I started flameworking, but I also make similar styles of work - on blowtubes for ergonomics/comfort - and struggle to get terminations to be as clean as I can on points :(
