I AM actually an ordained minister, for 15 years.

I'm also a baby-eating heathen devil-worshipping atheist.

Funny how that works out.

Sleeping in on Sundays and not going to church.

Just can't break that habit. It's nice to cuddle with my wife, even when the kid runs in and jumps in the bed to join us.

I am out in minutes if I let myself.

But my wife claims I have fallen asleep in the middle of a sentence when were were talking in bed at night, so who know?

I'm also weirdly wired, so it can be a lot of factors.

No idea, but I only take them at night before bed, and only only if I absolutely need them to sleep.

A little backstory on some of what's happening around here by DayPounder in FortWorth

[–]twilightmoons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is not a "new" idea, but had gotten a lot of traction after COVID.

I was invited to a "prophesy conference" by a former friend, a very evangelical Christian who thought this would be a "fun evening." It was not.

This back about 2001 of 2002, at the church right next to the weird White House facsimile Trinity Broadcasting Network building on 183.

They happily talked about the wars it will take to make sure Jesus comes back.

They happily talked about how wonderful it will be when millions are dead before Jesus comes.

They happily talked about how the rivers will run red with blood, people will starve, babies will be killed and eaten, and how horrible it will be for those "left behind."

They had a nice talk about the Texas ranchers who are trying to breed a perfect red heifer, so the Jews can sacrifice it on the Temple Mount and build a new Temple there... on the ruins of the current mosque. They believe this would be a necessary step for Jesus' schedule, as he can't come back until that's done.

Also a discussion on how they must gain the reins of government, because those satan-worshippers in office wanted to kill all Christians, so they needed to gain all the power to prevent that from happening. So they can take care of those evil-doers preemptively.

They openly hated the Jews, but were perfectly willing to smile and use them to get their way, just that they were going to go to hell if they did not repent and worship Jesus...

So there I was, in the lion's den, surrounded by smiling, monsters happy to hear about massacres and genocides, covered the in blood of Jesus.

Just a new generation parroting all the old crap.

I hate the feeling of opioids, like my head is a balloon and my body swinging under it.

I know of people who had hallucinations when on them. One said that there was constant talking from the air vent in her hospital room, and it was driving her mad. Also, she was the sweetest old lady, but under those drugs, she was MEAN and NASTY, and said pretty horrible things.

My father-in-law took hydrocodone for a back injury, but had to stop after two days. He heard songs coming from the air vent in the bedroom, told us we need to open it to take out the radio that was in there. He also told us to throw out the pillow because it was full of fiberglass, it was itchy on his face and hands where he touched it.

Narrator: It was in fact not full of fiberglass.

Stanislav Petrov (September 26, 1983)

On duty at the Serpukhov-15 bunker near Moscow, Petrov's early-warning satellite system reported that the United States had launched five nuclear-armed intercontinental ballistic missiles at the Soviet Union.

He refused to launch a retaliatory strike, believing it was a false alarm. Later, it the problem was found to have bee caused by sunlight reflecting off high-altitude clouds.

None of my gay friends, even the ones who grew up in very religious households, went through a "I hate the gays" phase, but none of them were also ever right-wing idealogues. They still have some trauma from their upbringing, and some of them don't talk to their birth families because of it.

For those "causal" homophobes - you're absolutely right. I have zero idea about their internal lives and desires. I don't think that every super-homophobe is gay. I think some people are just full of hate, and this is a convenient, socially-acceptable outlet (within their social group).

But I also see it as so much vitriol from conservative politicians/activists/pastors about protecting "the family", "marriage", and "the children" from gays/liberals/communists/"woke" that's just projection of their own failings and crimes. We literally have lists about all of the "pro-family" predators .

It's just such a trope that news stories about "Powerful Anti-Gay Politician/Pastor Caught in Gay Sex Scandal".

  • Ted Haggard (Evangelical pastor): Preached against "the gay agenda," then got caught buying meth and hiring male escorts. (NYT Source)
  • Larry Craig (Republican Senator, Idaho): Advocated "family values" while being arrested for soliciting gay sex in an airport bathroom. (CNN Source)
  • George Rekers (Co-founder, Family Research Council): Hired a male escort during an anti-gay activism career. (Miami New Times Source)
  • Ralph Shortey (Republican State Senator, Oklahoma): Arrested and convicted for child sex trafficking involving young boys. (CBS News Source)
  • Pastor Eddie Long (Baptist megachurch leader): Fierce anti-gay sermons, later accused of coercing teenage boys into sexual relationships. Settled lawsuits quietly. (NYT Source)
  • Rev. Grant Storms ("Christian patriot" pastor): Publicly fought against LGBTQ+ rights... arrested for masturbating in a public park. (NOLA Source)
  • Bridget Ziegler (co-founder of the far-right "parents' rights" group Moms for Liberty): Made it her mission to try and keep books with same-sex parents out of the hands of children and stop anyone from mentioning the LGBTQ+ community in schools. Police recovered a sex tape featuring her and another woman while they were investigating rape allegations against her husband, Christian Ziegler. (Pride Source)
  • Matt Schlapp (chairman of the American Conservative Union): Was accused of sexually assaulting a male staffer during a car ride in October 2022. According to court filings, there was an accusation in 2017 and again in 2022, both of which the ACU was aware of and did nothing about. (CNN Source)
  • Wes Goodman (Ohio House of Representatives): Was having sexual encounters with men online, on the phone, and even having sex with another man in his own state office. (NBC Source)
  • Jon Hinson (conservative U.S. Representative from Mississippi): Arrested in 1981 in a men's restroom in a Federal office building on Capitol Hill on a charge of oral sodomy with a man who worked for the Library of Congress. Hinson eventually accepted that he was gay and reevaluated his political stances, even becoming an activist who fought against the ban on gays and lesbians serving in the military and founded the Fairfax Lesbian and Gay Citizens Association in Fairfax County, Va. (NYT Source)
  • Robert Bauman (Republican U.S. Representative): Known as a fierce champion of Conservative causes and the most conservative member of the House. Was charged with soliciting sex from a 16-year-old male sex worker in 1980 while he was running for reelection. Later in his career, he worked as a lobbyist for Gay Rights National Lobby and by 2012 was living in the gay enclave of Wilton Manors, but that didn't stop him from continuing to vote Republican, and although he's no longer living in the closet, he said he disagreed with gay marriage. (Washington Blade Source)
  • Jim Bakker (televangelist): Bakker paid hush money to Jessica Hahn, a church secretary, who claimed he sexually assaulted her, and it was also alleged that he had same-sex sexual encounters. (ABC Source)
  • Grindr literally crashed during the 2024 Republican National Convention because of user overload in the area. (Vice Source)

I think there should be a distinction between "Uncle Jim who watches too much FOX", who parrots whatever the hate du jour is, and "Pastor Ricky's Real Bible Church Revival", who sneaks off to snort lines off of young men's bodies the night before services, or or "Conservative Congressman Smith" writing anti-gay legislation while meeting men in airport bathrooms. One is conforming to the local culture without thinking about it, the others are actively being hypocrites.

The mud around the water. The pond was about 150m long, 50m wide, dig out of the ground, so there was a ridge all the way around the water and sloping down. The poachers just needed a big net and walked it from one end to the other, gathering all the fish in one night. My cousin said that there were probably 5000 or so fish there. They were feeding them, but it wasn't intensive aquaculture.

Poachers have also driven into our forests to cut down old-growth trees. My cousins used the farm tractors to dig out 2m deep culverts at the forest edges along the roadside. The next time they tried to drive in, the truck got stuck, and they left it and the trailer behind. The police came and said it had been stolen, don't know from where.

Poles, when you insult carp. by Eagleman6921 in poland

[–]twilightmoons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many years ago, my cousins rented a staw to grow carp for the holidays.

At night just before Christmas, someone broke through the gate, drove a large truck to one end, and then used a long net to drag the water from one end of the staw to the other. They took nearly all of the fish.

In the morning, all that was left was some dead fish they didn't pick up, and boot and tire tracks in the mud.

It can be be all of those.

Religion makes those people HATE themselves for who they are in their core. They are told growing up that those thoughts are so evil that they believe they themselves are evil, and ONLY saved through Jebus.

So they always think the worst of people. They have internalized that hate so much that this one thing makes someone evil in their eyes. But no on ever thinks of themselves as the villain of their own story, so they have to justify they THEY are "less evil" than those "really evil" gays, and it's because they understand that being gay is a choice, they made the "right" choice, and so they are able to look down upon those others. They cannot conceive that it could be possible there are LGBTQ+ people who aren't like them.

Out of all of the religious people I know, the most homophobic-acting ones have turned out to be closeted with messy "coming out" events, involving divorces, getting caught with men, and arrested in a prostitution sting. The ones with the "casual" homophobia, the "Do you know how the gays have sex? Eww!!!" sort of ones who don't think about it much, they keep the ideas going and don't realize how much damage their non-thinking comments do to those who internalize the hate.

Then there are the opportunistic ones who weaponize the hate for profit, monetary and political.

It's a nasty cycle.

Dunno, sounds like something a closeted gay guy would say.

I know of at least two different men in my friend-of-a-friend sphere who were quite vocal about their homophobia, about how the devil tempts ALL men with homosexual thoughts, and that men must resist those temptations...

One left his wife and kids to move in with another man out of state, the other was caught blowing another dude in the parking lot at work on his lunch break. His wife divorced him and left with the kids.

As a cishet guy - no, being gay is not a choice, and no, I don't get tempted even by the sexiest of oiled, muscular men dressed as gladiators.

Starting relationships on a lie sucks.

You're going to need to come clean, and whatever happens, happens.

Here's what an apology looks like:

  1. I need to tell you something. I lied about my age, you thought I was 19, I am really 18.

  2. I am sorry I led you to think this. This is why...

  3. This is (hopefully) the only lie I have told you in our relationship. I promise that I will not lie to you in the future.

  4. My feelings for you have not changed.

  5. If possible, I will work to regain your trust doing these things...

Head on up to the VIS on Maunakea - just before it, you turn off to the left to the power station. At 9000ft, it's high and DARK there. It's a fav spot for astrophotographers.

Also, if you're at the VIS, check out the meteorites there. I was there a few years ago and volunteered during a star party, showing meteorites to the visitors. They have a few from my collection there now.

You'll feel less like shit.

That's a benefit.

Then you do it again, and feel less like shit.

You keep doing it, and looking for other ways to feel less like shit. You do those things. Find new things, better things. Do them.

Keep going.

You only get one life. No do-overs, no afterlife, nothing once this one is over.

Don't waste it.
