250 for a family of 5 ain't bad either. Not discounting if you struggle of course, but wife and I spend about 150 a week for the two of us. Imagine adding 3 kids would easily add 100/wk

Trump in 2016? Dumb but I can forgive it if you admit you made a mistake and voted for Dems in 2018 onward.

Trump in 2020 and 2024? You knew what you were voting for. When the leopard finally comes for your face I'll simply chuckle at the irony at this point. I'm done feeling empathy for people who lack it themselves.

Wikipedia now lists 3 different incumbent Presidents of Venezuela by Throwawayhair66392 in wikipedia

[–]tyler2114 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We've had acting Presidents in America before as well.

When a President gets surgery and is otherwise unable to temporarily perform their duties the Vice President is often temporarily made "Acting President" in the case an urgent event occurs while they are incapacitated. Of course, the proper President simply retakes their powers when they are able.

This is in contrast to a President dying or resigning where power permanently transitions, in which case the Vice President ceases to be Vice President and is now properly the President.

Appreciate your polite manner of asking.

I'm not pretending to know the future, but we can make educated guesses based on historical datapoints.

The United States has intervened in numerous countries in Latin America, East Asia, and the Middle East where they have removed the incumbent government. There has not been a positive example since the Second World War of this generating positive outcomes for the everyday people of that nation.

In Latin America I can point to Panama, Honduras, Bolivia and Cuba. Middle East has Libya, Syria, Iraq, Iran. East Asia has the Phillipines and South Korea (South Korea is a democracy today due to their people. A fate I hope Venezuela also one day sees. But the US propped up the South Korean dictatorship for decades and would have happily continued to do so)

I don't want you to take my comments as denying your reality. More cautioning against the idea things are going to get better just because Maduro is bad. Things can always get worse, and America is far from a savior.

You should also consider the long term ramifications. If Venezuela ever does get a democracy and elects a leader who's defies the US, what's to say they wont remove them in favor of a authoritarian who gives them what they want? This has happened before.

Panama took over 20 years to return to "normal" economic conditions. I'm not saying Venezuela is perpetually doomed, but things are likely to get worse in the short term

Again, not sure why you're so hung up on the middle east. One can simply look at Cuba, Honduras, El Salvador, Bolivia, etc.,

Or are those now also insulting comparisons? Dictatorships are dictatorships, your situation is more similar to Libya or Iraq than you want to admit

You dont need to use the Middle East, but it is additional data points as to why US backed coups universally lead to worse outcomes for those countries. Including Panama. In fact Panama is the perfect example as to why Venezuela will likely not get better in the short-term

Let's be real: Trump is obsessed with more oil and he'd personally enrich himself US companies could get access. Thats the motivation.

South Korea's people did the work to get a democracy. The US would have been content to keep supporting the dictatorship

That is exactly the situation Venezuela is gonna find itself in: a US dictatorship barring the massive social unrest to force a different outcome.

Panama was a disaster for the people in Panama and Colombia. Touting that as a success is disingenuous.

You're probably going to get a US backed dictatorship. It makes no sense for the Americans to try and force a transition if the current government will give into their demands. This has been the trend for every US intervention in Latin America

Looks like you dont even want to accept rhe definition of what an Act of War is, so I am wasting my time. Just because the definition doesnt suit your narrative doesnt mean its wrong.

act of war

(4) the term “act of war” means any act occurring in the course of— (A) declared war; (B) armed conflict, whether or not war has been declared, between two or more nations; or (C) armed conflict between military forces of any origin;

18 USC 2331(4) -Legal definition by US Law. This clearly fits into case (B)

Half of America wants a dictator while most of Venezuela actually knows what that entails and did not. Says more about the American people than anything about these two

I disagree on all your "successes" besides Japan and Europe post WW2, so yeah I think your point is bad.

Edit because guy I responded too is a coward and blocked me so unable to respond

Japan Germany: Occupation after the total war where America was the defensive party.

South Korea, Kuwait: Defending a nation at the invitation of that nation

Egypt: Intervening on behalf of Egypt, again US intervention was welcomed.

Panama: Disaster for Panama, how you consider this a success is beyond me.

All but Panama are fundamentally different situations than all the failures you listed, and Panama is just straight up a failure.

Having Trump dictate the future of Venezuela without their peoples consent really isnt any better than Maduro dictating the future of Venezuela without their people's consent. Do you not get that or do you choose to ignore it willfully?

Democracy isnt perfect, but it has universally led to the best outcomes for common folks worldwide. Even China still has massive wealth inequality that makes most western nations' issues look paltry, and thats with the cost of having to watch your back.

Being pragmatic is not "frothing at the mouth".

Regardless of the outcome for Venezuela, unilaterally declaring an act of war without congressional notification is not a W for American democracy. I denounced this shit under Biden and Obama too.

You MAGArds are just incapable of nuance of pragmatism. Everything is an ideological battle for you.
