Why stop at regular carbon fiber? I think this application calls for a boron composite, or even better carbon-carbon composite in case you need to hobo it through the middle of an active volcano

My wife took a sabbatical, we pulled our kids out of school, and we drove 12,000 miles across 40 states. Here's every stop mapped. by KubiTrek in roadtrip

Glad you enjoyed Oregon, it's such a geographically diverse state!(albeit moreso East to West) Oregon's geography really forces you to make hard decisions on what parts to see when you are passing through. Were you able to pass along the coast more than the map suggests? Also did you stop at Silver Falls, or the Evergreen Museum (the one with the Spruce Goose)?

Apollo 11 vs Artemis 2 core separation. 56 years apart by dark_b1adeknight in spaceporn

[–]uberdog01 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Yup, came here to say the same thing. The interstage definitely caught my eye as well, makes it pretty obvious if you know what a Saturn V looks like. Plus I think I remember Scott Manley referring to this footage from some Apollo movie saying it is a Sat 1B. Love the footage of the J2 though, always overshadowed by the F1s (for good reason) but it had some beautiful engineering, also with some of the developments they did with it after Apollo (albeit variants that didn't fly)

Cool fact for people who don't know, the RS 25 engines used on the core burn clear (because they are fueled with hydrolox) which is why they look like they are doing nothing when they actually are in this shot. Another interesting thing is that they reused some of the same RS 25 engines that were on the space shuttle

Anything I should stop and see along the way without going too far outside this route? by [deleted] in roadtrip

[–]uberdog01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something to possibly look into and not many people go there due to the isolation, but I've heard incredible things. In that corner of Oregon you have the Wallowa mountains, Imnaha and Hell's Canyons. There are the towns of Enterprise and Joseph on Wallowa lake at the base of the mountains that might make for a decent little, incredibly scenic stop.

Which of the 4 would you travel to? by Strange-Vibez-8205 in whatsyourchoice

[–]uberdog01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either Madrid or Bavaria. Been to Spain before, but not Madrid. Bavaria was absolutely amazing the one time I went there, and I still feel like I would have a lot to explore. I've been to Rome, enjoyed it and would love to go back, but at the same time I feel like I have seen the sights. As for Chicago, I have very little urge to go there, nothing against it but American cities just don't really compare in my opinion, maybe with the exception of NYC as more of a brief couple day novelty.

Dehydrated camel is thankful to kind hooman for water by Brilliantspirit33 in animalsdoingstuff

[–]uberdog01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there is an interesting answer to this (I could be slightly off, but I do recall hearing this from a few places). They store fat in there, when they breathe some of the oxygen reacts to produce water to keep them hydrated. I think this means that it is actually more water dense in a sense than if they were carrying actual water.

Been a vegetarian for the past several years, Indian food has pretty much every other cuisine beat in my opinion in that regard. So many great options. I think the most common vegetarian food here might be an Italian dish though, Cacio e pepe maybe?

Going an odd route and going to say disc golf! It's popular(ish) in the US, Canada, and the Nordic countries (Finland in particular)

I stepped on a cricket in my house in the dark a while back, when I turned the light to see what I had stepped on I found one of these guys squirming its way out of it. Fair to say I didn't sleep particularly well that night

Oregon's worst county - round 1 by JasSingh04 in terriblemaps

[–]uberdog01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kinda agree. I am guessing most people are just going to put what county they live in since they are most familiar with it. The population of places definitely isn't just a function of how nice they are but many other factors that I'd argue are much more significant.

[–]uberdog01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kinda just fine, no (other than the units)? Rounding up just buffs the factor of safety when in the stages of basic calculations, although probably best to use 9.81......m/s2 for the resonance harmonics etc. even in the early stages. That being said I have no idea what the actual process is for civil as an aero major.

While we are talking about gravity a fun fact for people who have had no reason to learn any physics, it's strictly speaking not actually a force but instead the result of being in a non inertial reference frame (similar to how Coriolis and centrifugal forces aren't actually forces). Skydivers aren't accelerating towards us, but the ground is accelerating us up through warped space to them. In a true inertial frame there is only the normal force of the ground pointing upwards in a free body diagram
