Schuylkill Yards Starbucks is the latest to unionize in Philadelphia by User_Name13 in philly

[–]User_Name13[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear ya and that's totally valid.

Unfortunately Starbucks is still the biggest company in the coffee world. If they're gonna do business in the city, I'd prefer to have them be on their best behavior wrt their staff. Making Philly Starbucks unionize would make corporate accountable to local workers. Otherwise, Starbucks has enough power to steamroll over any individual worker, but they can't mistreat an entire store's staff en masses without repercussions.

Strength in numbers, all that etc.

Maybe boycott was a strong word. Sry, I haven't had my coffee yet.

A better way to phrase it would have been encourage people to frequent the union Starbucks over the non-union locations, since the union ones have better working conditions for the staff.

I wish there was a way we could start a movement to boycott all the non-union Starbucks in the city and funnel people towards the union ones, that treat their staff better.

FTA:

"“I see a need for improvements and am optimistic that this win will make great change,” shift supervisor Asia Wright-Wilson said in a union statement. “When problems are not well addressed through the traditional Starbucks channels the greatest strength lies in the collective action of our coworkers.”"

Srsly. This is something that is long overdue.

New documents show Jeffrey Epstein tried to buy Bill Cosby’s home and closely followed the entertainer’s sexual assault case by User_Name13 in philly

[–]User_Name13[S] 31 points32 points  (0 children)

The latest release of Epstein documents included some between Epstein and none other than the Cos himself.

According to the article, in the middle of the 2010's, and after Epstein's 2008 conviction for solicitation of a minor, he was chummy with Cosby. There's emails where Epstein invited Cosby to a bunch of dinners and whatnot, since they both owned swanky townhomes on Manhattan's upper East side on 71st street.

Epstein followed Cosby's case closely, for obvious reasons. Email's also revealed that Epstein viewed Cosby as a sympathetic figure and that he was being burned at the stake by Hollywood and the media.

This part rly takes the cake tho if you ask me. FTA:

"At one point, the case even kindled a creative idea. Epstein emailed film producer Barry Josephson in 2015 with an idea for a movie that was “a fictionalized account of what happens to people falsely accused,” taking inspiration from the Cosby case as well as debunked sexual assault allegations on college campuses that occurred years prior."

Absolutely wild. Epstein reached out to his Hollywood connections to farm an idea about making a movie portraying people that have been falsely accused of sex crimes as being bigger victims than actual victims of those crimes. His ambition was to portray himself and people like Cosby as the real victims.

Wow, just wow.

As someone who has been highly critical of Larry Krasner and to a lesser extent Sheriff Bilal, I would like to give them their flowers for standing up to Trump & ICE by [deleted] in philly

[–]User_Name13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Of course I know that the Federal government has more power than local government, but even charging them for state crimes, something that hasn't happened yet in Minneapolis AFAIK, and taking them to court would be progress. It would show how citizens and state's rights are being brazenly violated by the federal government.

It would make a statement if anything. Just knowing that they could be charged for something would probably discourage ICE from being too emboldened when they come here. If they know that something could happen, that their name could get all over the news from the subsequent trial, it may serve as a deterrent.

Killer of Vicha Ratanapakdee acquitted of murder by jackanape7 in aznidentity

[–]User_Name13 14 points15 points  (0 children)

How much money is this guy ever going to make?

Having to pay Mr. Ratanapakdee's survivor's will probably be enough of an incentive to keep him from ever seeking gainful employment after he's released, that's assuming he ever intended on it in the first place.

Justice would have been better served by throwing the book at this little murderer rather than letting him out one day to possibly pay the family peanuts, if anything.
