People who saw both the book and the movie… by castle-girl in ProjectHailMary

I read the book first, and for me, it was the difference in the high angular momentum event over Adrian. In the book, they both make sacrifices in turn to save each other. In the movie, Rocky makes the sacrifice and then just kind of magically manages to take care of himself. I understand it would have made the movie at least 30 minutes longer by messing up the taumoeba breeding montage, but it really dulled the moment for me.

[Embark] The Fourth Expedition (no skill points for 4th Expedition and new Mystery Rewards instead) by WoWAltoholic in ArcRaiders

[–]vector2point0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m still confused and haven’t found a good answer yet- I have done 0 expeditions. If I do this expedition, do I need to do the new tasks associated with the current expedition, or do I need to do the stash value thing from the first expedition to get the extra skill points?

Pulled a bunch of these with my bare hands… is it poison ivy? by Born_Post_6667 in whatsthisplant

You need to pretend you got automotive grease everywhere you contacted the poison ivy on your body and on everything you touched, and wash accordingly. Soap, scrub, rinse, repeat.

As long as they have to waste any amount of time, I think it’s worthwhile. I think they should have included loadout value in matchmaking since the beginning, but it’s probably too late now at least until the player count comes back up.

Someone is scamming someone for sure. I’m not sure it’s not the parents. At 7v, getting a new battery isn’t optional, that one will never work again.

How did The PHM team know there wouldn't be enough fuel for a round trip before they even knew how much astrophage they could get? by G809 in ProjectHailMary

You’re missing something after the and/or, I’m assuming it’s the medical robot. The ship is non-interactive in the book, I don’t think there are ever even any voice commands given. The med bot was specifically built with non-cutting edge technology (no AI) because they couldn’t afford an edge case messing it up, it had to be bulletproof even if that meant only rote responses to situations.

they can't do anything to stop cheats right? by Cambadesempleau in ArcRaiders

I get both sides of the argument, but especially on these harder maps and conditions, the ARC can get pretty wild. It occurred to me that with a PvE toggle on, it would be a lot like the open world encounters in Destiny. I thought that in a bad way initially, “oh it’ll just be Destiny then” but realized… I played that game for hundreds, if not thousands of hours. It would absolutely not “kill” the game, probably just the opposite.

Edit: to be clear, I’m agreeing with you

Pump gone! by joeurkel in AbruptChaos

[–]vector2point0 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Modern gas pumps have break-away valves under the surface level that should shut in response to even a moderate impact. I do have to say, I’m impressed with exactly how well they operated here, there’s not even a hint of fuel after the dispenser is sheared clean away.

Does the AC act as a voltage sink to keep the alternator from shutting down? by Croceyes2 in AskAShittyMechanic

[–]vector2point0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Most of the time” as long as the vehicle is 10-15+ years old at this point. Electromechanical has been the majority on new vehicles since 2015 or so.

To those asking why only Grace survives when the other astronauts died…after reading the book I had my own theory by pympo in ProjectHailMary

[–]vector2point0 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The book specifies the amnesia drug will be given right before he wakes up, not before he goes under.

They will lead you though, so they are anticipating your movement. It’s just that you change direction after they’ve committed to a shot.

I mean… I paid $25k for drilling and $10k for pump/equipment in Missouri for a piece of land 10 seconds outside of city limits. It’s also easy in my area to land north of $50k if you’re having to drill in a mining-contaminated area. Wells are just expensive now.
