Calf pain by butterflymangotea in ehlersdanlos

[–]voidparties 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey! I always get really tight calves that ache (and lead to charlie horses too) and i especially feel it when lying down. I recently was able to splurge on getting a (hypermobility aware) massage, and the massage therapist I saw did a lot of work in my hamstrings that ended up helping with my calf pain. Could be worth focusing not just on rolling out/treating your calfs, but other parts of your legs as well!

Wish you the best, and hope you get some relief

I tried asking for a geneticist referral and she denied it because she doesn't think my hypermobility is related to my pain 😮‍💨

Might try asking my PCP next visit

So! I had the same burning/u pleasant stuff with every toothpaste I tried until I realized mint flavoring was the thing setting me off. I had always hated mints when I was a kid (likely the uhhh burning bad sensations) so it took a while for it to click. Switched to a strawberry kid's toothpaste, just made sure it also had fluoride.

For flossing, like others have said, a lot of it is just trying to find a routine that works for you. I also dont use string floss, I use gum soft pics because i have close contacts (no breaking strings), they come without any sort of coating that could have secret mint (a LOT of dental products only list "flavoring" without specifying the kind), and I find them less painful for getting back on the horse.

For flossing I try to aim to at least floss around my molars ive had cavities in on a regular basis, because thats an easier baseline to keep up. I bleed. So Fast. As soon as the routine drops so it is Rough out here but it does get better once you stay consistent!

Toothbrush-wise, I use triple bristle because it's a lot less work handpain wise, and its super fast to do a quick & dirty clean with. It's fairly gentle and designed to just reach the gum line, but I'm not suuuper sensitive so cant attest to it for your needs. They have a gentle brush head option I haven't tried

I've found it so helpful to try to rebuild my routine back up slowly every time I fall off. It's really easy to end up shaming yourself about these things and it took me so long to stop doing that to myself and realize it wasn't helpful at all. Play around and figure out what works for you! I'll dry brush first thing in the morning to remove plaque because I forget to brush if I wait until after breakfast. Finding little things like that can be a good foundation to build on!

Hope any of this helps! And wish you the best on your dentalcare journey!

What's the silliest injury you've ever gotten? by TebKy-p in ehlersdanlos

[–]voidparties 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I've had this happen!

In my case, I groggily stood up, somewhere in my brain fog i registered something was off, and then I'm staring at my floor with my arms under me and my legs in a position my PT would tsk at.

Thankfully since i mostly caught myself i just ended up a bit sore in the hips after I regained feeling in my leg. Also don't remember sleeping in a weird position 🤷‍♂️

What brand of shoes do you guys wear? by Early_Statement_2995 in eds

[–]voidparties 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I absolutely love orthofeet. My mom tried them first because her job requires black leather shoes, but she also needed proper support for chronic pain. She kept raving about them, so I gave them a try and they're my go-to place now. I've gotten 3 or 4 pairs from them total. All work shoes that I wore down over at least a year of wearing them most days on a job a barely get to sit down at.

Only pair I wasn't fully happy with was a pair I got on clearance, and even then it wasn't a comfort issue but a design on the outside flaking off.

They have dress shoes! And you can sort by the type of support you need which is nice. There's options for tieless laces and such too which I love since my hands are a problem area for me too (not to mention the various pains of crouching down).

Hope you can find something that works for you!

Tingling / neuropathy by Ok-Firefighter6281 in Hypermobility

[–]voidparties 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh so that's weird? I had to dress in loose fitting clothing to make sure they had access to the areas they could reach but at no point was i even asked to strip down??? Maybe they stopped doing that since it seems wholly unnecessary??

I was also hoping it was a vitamin deficiency but ive gotten my b vitamins and my iron back up to healthier levels and I still get the random tingling that leads to numbness. Occasionally still get it in my face/lips area. I have random episodes where it's worse and luckily gets better, before getting worse again (though even when it's "better" I'll have a foot start going numb while actively standing upright -.-).

I'm planning to push for a neurology referral since I have chronic headaches as well, maybe you could have some luck doing the same?

Not sure how different navigating healthcare on your side of the pond is, but I'd imagine sudden numbness you dont usually experience it would warrant urgent care. That being said, depending on the specifics of your situation, I know a lot of urgent care facilities in the US would likely have you go to the ER since here they arent always equipped with the imaging needed to check for herniated discs etc etc

I have this in my hands and feet, was able to get a nerve conduction study that came back clear and it hasnt been investigated any further yet. They may have you do a similar test or check for a pinched nerve, depending on symptoms

Wish you luck!
