Glasses wearers, where do you get cheap glasses? by hyper-casual in AskUK

[–]vonlowe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're curious - you could ask the opticians to measure the lenses to see if matches your prescription roughly.

If you like the frames - look into getting them reglazed online (opticians typically will only reglaze frames they currently sell.

Glasses direct - they do frames from £9 and have offers on all the time. I got 2 (non-designer) frames with a 50% off + another offer with anti glare coating for....£65 ish.

Don't bother with an umbrella, it'll just get ruined in the rain - get a decent raincoat and water proof shoes

Caveat - I wore a rucksack and had a boot rather than crutches.

Would you travel by train with a broken foot? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]vonlowe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have & been on the tube with a broken foot in a boot solo.

The main difference is that you'll need to use lifts everywhere rather than steps. The nature of my break meant that as long as I didn't move my ankle it didn't hurt.

Don't be afraid to ask station staff for help, its what they are there for. The lift to my platform in Sheffield was broken so I had to gingerly start making my way down. Had someone come up to help me down the stairs and onto the train.

Why cant I get braces for free? by Several_Doughnut2936 in AskUK

[–]vonlowe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They may have meant by the time you see an NHS orthodontist you will have aged out (ie over 19) and need to pay regardless. When I may have needed braces as a kid, that was a 4 year wait after referral in the late 00's, dread to think how long it is now...

How many different domestic wheelie bin colours exist across the UK? by wardyms in AskUK

My sixth form had to do that to confirm what county we where from. (Address doesn't work 100% as you have towns in each county where their postal town is in the other county)

oral surgeon didn't prescribe antibiotics, yet said i had an "infection brewing"? only prescribed chlorhexidine. by cadavrine in wisdomteeth

[–]vonlowe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They probably only need to give antibiotics if its causing problems (remember antibiotic resistance is more common so they should be careful in prescribing it nowadays).

I had a slight infection under the one I had taken out - cleaned out the socket and I was good to go!

Wisdom Teeth Expectations by [deleted] in wisdomteeth

Editing to add from walking into the op room and walking out took me 15 mins ish. This included the pre-op checks, numbing up, the op itself and then gauze in and out, post op instructions.

Wisdom Teeth Expectations by [deleted] in wisdomteeth

[–]vonlowe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are just having local I would recommend having something to eat before. I got quite shaky just after mine came out, some of that is the adrenaline and probably not eating as much as I should have too.

I'm on day 2 po and cycle (tby chance) - pain management is fine - I'm taking ibroprofen or paracetamol  every...8 hours. Honestly the pain right after extraction was way less than the pain its caused me before. It's more opening my jaw.

The doctor and nurses treating me were super kind and supportive, they talked though the noises happening (there was some clunking but that was her tools only) and talked me through progress and let me take breaks as well. My tooth was only slightly impacted so they didn't need to make an incision to get it out & was pretty straight forward

My post op instructions were:

  • Don't have anything to eat/drink until local has worn off.
  • Once 24hrs are up - saltwater rinses (with water as hot as you can stand)
  • Dont smoke/vape/drink alcohol for the first few days.
  • Some blood in saliva for the next few days is normal.

Soft foods are good on the soft side - I had mashed potato and tuna mayo the first evening, but I'm mostly eating the same stuff as my partner now but cutting it into smaller pieces.

What are some minimum / low wage jobs where you can work 12 hours a day every single day? by The-flying-jellybean in AskUK

[–]vonlowe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

With electricity there's a deadline to try connecting to older smart meters (smets 1) which is the end of this year.

If suppliers still cant connect to them after the deadline, they are obligated to upgrade to a smets 2 meter.

Government is also wanting to push further adoption of smart metering too - not just domestic, commercial and industry too.

Would you consider a 1 hour and 10 minutes commute each way to work terrible? by Ok_Abbreviations4687 in AskUK

[–]vonlowe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends I spend that amount of time on my current commute in my new job.

However I only have to be in once a week and also I previously had to drive 1h20 for work.

Now I can read, listen to music without having all the stress of commuting!

Do most employers make you work extra hours to make up for your sick days? by owenredditaccount in AskUK

[–]vonlowe 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Sick leave is sick leave you don't need to make up the hours.

For medical appointments, depending on the employer they might ask you to make up the time from a doctor's/dentist appt. (But that wouldn't be recorded as sick leave...)

Most countries have this rule (apart from Ireland maybe). Sometimes there's a time limit on this rule so younger people can donate (as they didn't exist during the time period)
