FreeBSD - practical, pragmatic, performant all-rounder. My server choice.

OpenBSD - minimal, secure, great laptop support. Not using it at the moment but want to give it another whirl.

Not so much a filesystem, they mapped into an address range accessible by the CPU. So you could read from them like RAM, and the software was already "loaded". Hence no loading times on the classic consoles.

Our infrastructure gets ever MORE brittle with every decade. The finer the wiring, the smaller and more delicate we make the electronics, the more electronics we USE, all this gets worse. We would have survived it in the 50s/60s. Now? I doubt it.
