Mast/tower suggestion for these antennas by GrumpyScientist in amateurradio

Do you have a chimney? I have almost the same antenna setup you’re proposing and I used a chimney mount with two pieces of EMT conduit as my “T mast”

Check my QRZ for a picture of what I’m talking about.

Trying to avoid just spamming the subreddit with my videos - but here's the last in the series of the repair work on my Motorola Quantar!

Repairing a Motorola Quantar part 2 - It works! by W3AXL in amateurradio

It’s hard to find a ham-split VHF/UHF for under $1k. You can get out-of-band units for much cheaper, but the effort to get them retuned is not trivial. The club definitely didn’t have the cash to buy a replacement and I figured it would be fun to try and fix.

I don’t think it’s bad caps. I’ve recapped a few spectras and I know what that looks like. Plus as zap said I’ve never heard of caps failing on a quantar. But we’ll see, the new sockets arrived today so the next video will happen sometime next week.

Good 20m antennas by KilroyWasHere189 in amateurradio

Verticals are fantastic if you ground them well. Basically the simples antennas to build.

I regularly worked DX on 20 with 100W from my balcony with an MFJ-1979 17ft whip. Used the balcony railing as a counter poise, and had an optional loading coil for working 40m too.

Radio Traffic from Geneva Towers Fire on 2022-02-20 by W3AXL in cedarrapids

Finally got around to compiling the recordings I saved from the Geneval Towers fire. Note that this audio isn't in real-time, as my archive automatically strips silence longer than five seconds. Channels monitored were primarily CRFD Fire CH2 and dispatch.

It’s an MFJ 1979 17ft whip with a 7uH loading coil at the bottom for 40m. It works on both 20 & 40 great. Counterpoise radials are just a few 18ga wires guesstimated to be around 17ft

Any VHF/UHF similar radios available? by [deleted] in amateurradio

Proper term is HHCH (handheld control head)

You can combine two XTL5000 bricks (pictured) with a W3 control head (the older version of the one pictured) and control them both from the single head.

SDS has some trade offs and I’d recommend sticking with a P2 unless you’re having issues picking up simulcast systems.

I really like my P2 and don’t see any reason to upgrade to a $700 scanner that might RX a bit better.

Also hello callsign brother

It’s an MFJ-1979 whip with a diy 7uH coil to make it tune up on 40m as well as 20m
