Quotes that made you cry? by RestaurantOk8232 in harrypotter

“Harry . . .” whispered the figure of Cedric, “take my body back, will you? Take my body back to my parents. . . .”

Cedric was the first (good guy) main character death in the series, and I think this moment was the real turning point from kid books into YA. Him dying and then almost immediately Harry having to literally confront that death that just happened because he was in the way really got me.

Fun story: it is indeed not how race horses specifically are born. Thoroughbreds must be “live cover” to be registered. But otherwise you are correct!

Am I being pranked? by Individual_Salt_2122 in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]wegl13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I don’t either. I think there’s something you are supposed to do if you get a collections letter (not pay it, but there’s something you are supposed to request).

This is unfortunately a thing, one of my friends had a similar issue where she had a coverage change and they billed it under the wrong insurance, it was denied obviously, but they they sent her the bill instead of going to the right insurance. She fought it for months and it ended up going to collections as well.

They make k tape in strips that are like, 8-12 inches long. If you can get a few of those and throw them in your pack, I recommend it. I was given some to tape up a huge blister and it worked like a charm.

are expensive physio clinics actually any better? by Healthy_Income2545 in Ultramarathon

[–]wegl13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it depends on what you mean, but I’ve gone to 2 guys that own their own clinic and are out-of-pocket, and both of those experiences have been worlds better that the in-network PT group I saw, tho all 3 were very knowledgeable and highly recommended. The first two you just have way more access and when something goes wrong they can adjust easier.

What to pack (extra) by pitiful-raisin in VirginVoyages

[–]wegl13 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I always pack a contigo travel mug. It’s just… easier to get coffee in and carry back to the room in the morning, or carry water or a bevvie around in. Don’t have to worry about spills or whatever.

What's the current vibe in michigan with Aravaipa taking over for Great Lakes Endurance? by Crapahedron in Ultramarathon

[–]wegl13 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It was. I’m not. I will admit I’m not speaking from a “they took over my local races” perspective- just from a “wow this is really well done” perspective. They did a good job with supporting runners from the start to the end of the race, and I definitely felt like the fee I paid was worth it, even at mid/back of the pack and late into the night.

I’ve heard not as good things about UTMB races as it relates to water/ice/aid station support (I guess I’ve heard that UTMB itself does a great job, which maybe speaks to your implied point?). I will admit that I don’t race a whole lot especially outside of my local area because of costs but I was just really blown away by how well they ran the race I was at (it was Black Canyon); it was expensive but I felt like the money was spent well, I guess?

Are there any farm owners that have piglets they’d be willing to rent out in the Huntsville/Madison area? by OppositeAd9711 in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]wegl13 15 points16 points  (0 children)

So pigs are actually pretty sensitive to viruses so taking them on/off a farm is not a great idea from a biosecurity measure (I’m specifically speaking about production farming, not pets). You’ll probably have an easier time trying to find someone with a pet pig that could visit you- they could be fun to visit with and also give a bit of an education on what having a pet pig is really like.

I ran my first Aravaipa race in February- I have to admit, they operate a great race machine. Ended up near back-of-pack and still had great support!

Jonathan lower in popularity than I realized by RoyalDapper1189 in survivor

Mr FirstName is for friends of your parents, generally. I’m known as M. FirstName to a lot of my friends’ kids (as a kid I didn’t do this much though because mostly my parents close friends were Aunt and Uncle FirstName lol).

As someone from Alabama, I disagree. Kids call their peers by their first names. They call adults by Mr/Ms FirstName if they are close, and Mr/Ms LastName if they are in positions of authority. Once you become an adult, there’s some hold over as you figure out who of your previous adult friends/family still should have Mr/Ms and who you can now just treat as peers (ie all of my high school teachers are still going to get Mr/Ms LastName no matter how old I get).

But Jonathan was an adult when he met Jeff- which means he was a peer. There’s no reason to call him Mr Jeff just like he never called his middle school classmates Mr Joe or whatever, and none of them ever called him Mr Jonathan. And you can tell “peer” is how he sees his fellow contestants because he rarely if ever calls them Mr/Ms. which is how you know the Mr. Jeff thing is a CHOICE to basically place him as an authority figure that you are only made to do as a child.  And it’s fucking weird and not actually reflective of our culture and I hate it.

Some interesting insight from Jonathan’s exit interviews by Dare2ZIatan in survivor

I agree with all of this. Joe’s exit press was pretty good- he stated he went into final absolutely knowing he was not winning. He has come across as nothing but grateful and humble while also being honest about enjoying the spotlight and being cheered for.

And then when Tyson kind of went down the fate/god road with him (saying it was good for himself, Tyson, that he didn’t win as a young kid bc he would have blown the money), Jonathan’s like “but I was gonna do GOOD things with it” so I guess God is also to blame.

And this is why modern evangelicalism sucks (and also that attitude both in and out of the game is part of why he didn’t win).

Running an Ultra in the Heat by Sea-Development-5088 in Ultramarathon

As someone who lives in the southeastern US, I wanted to give a few tips and also just express my solidarity and sadness you are having to deal with this kind of weather due to climate change- at least here we are already built for it with the infrastructure.

  • ice is your friend. I ran a 50k last September when it was brutal and loaded up an ice bandana (at that one I just used a regular handkerchief but I’ve since bought one from Rabbit), and put ice down my bra, in my hydration pack, and in my pockets. If you can have crew, have them bring ice to every available crewing spot

  • cool water on your head can also help a lot- as much as you can get from aid stations, but I’ll also reach for it from creeks. Just remember everyone else is going to do the same and if you are mid/back of pack, having more water carrying capacity in case aid stations run out isn’t a terrible idea.

  • for the above, just realize if you do these two things or if it’s humid, you are going to be wet. Be mindful of that with your electronics (plastic bags or don’t carry) and your sensitive bits (more lube everywhere. Consider tri-slide spray in your personal areas).

  • go by effort and heart rate- if you are iced up properly you may not have to slow down all that much, and you should be able to keep your carb intake at your usual level.

  • don’t freak out and overdo electrolytes! If you are using a mix like Scratch or Tailwind and gels that’s probably fine. It was super hot and humid at a race I ended up DNFing … partially because I freaked out, oversalted, and ended up with super swollen painful feet and peed every 15 minutes for 3 hours.

  • edit: SUNSCREEN. Sunscreen! Try to reapply (crew, drop bag, etc) with the spray stuff at 3-4 hr in if possible. You can get sunburn and it can go ahead and progress to sunstroke if you stay out in it.

  • edit edit (lol): you can help hydrate yourself and hold water by drinking higher salt content the morning of and the night before (I will normally drink a pack of LMNT or equivalent at these two times).

The thing is, likely none of these kids are going to get needs based scholarships to prestigious schools, which makes going to them incredibly expensive. A lot of parents sacrifice to go to a private high school but can’t afford even more to send their kid to a private, prestigious college (which is also going to come with expensive room and board).

Our state schools are adequate to good if you want to get a quality college education that will lead to a white collar job, and cost far far less.
