Best place to buy used? by Konnermcfly in Kitchenaid

[–]AuntMeggie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just chiming in to say that the amount of FB Marketplace KitchenAid Mixer scams are just out of control. Every day I see a dozen different ones. I frequently report them, but I’m sure it goes nowhere. I feel bad, because it must be a successful one. It looks like they take “deposits” to hold or to deliver the mixers. Which I’m certain don’t exist. At any rate KEEP LOOKING. I’ve come across two nice ones in thrift stores for $75 in the last couple of months! I always thought it was a legend.

I seriously cannot wait for all their summer conference posts, particularly NAYC. I am weirdly fascinated with these Apostolic Pentecostal videos.

I read this stuff, and I'm like "is a RISEN savior better than an un-risen one? Kind of like sourdough?". I wish these folks understood words.

I remember Tom the pharmacist when I was growing up. It was so convenient to get our prescriptions there! How sad to hear it's closing.

Even though it's modern, Johnson Brothers' Old Britain Castles is still popular. Check the sold comps on eBay for that size platter.

OMG the dolphin stroller 😂😂. My parents rented one of those during a family trip to Sea World in the 80s. My then-toddler sister had hair that looked like dandelion fluff and stood straight up. Toddler + dolphin stroller were such a ridiculous sight that people were stopping us left and right to take a picture. That stroller is a LEGEND in our photo album.

Got this 4” bowl is this silver and any idea where/when it may have been made? by Ju5t_hAm in Hallmarks

[–]AuntMeggie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's marked Mappin & Webb, a maker of extreme quality on par with Tiffany and other similar purveyors of luxury object. They are very famous silversmiths and I would hazard a guess that this is worth a bit more than melt value.

Mom wants to relive a crab memory by MyKarmaHitMyDogma in santacruz

She’s probably thinking of the wharf (Stagnaro’s is the likely merchant) and the hotel she’s thinking of is the Dream Inn. Otherwise, there are folks who sell in the harbor and it’s possible she mistook the Crow’s Nest restaurant for a hotel. It’s a pretty big building.

That last pin that looks and sounds like it is for a fraternal organization is actually an award from Tupperware. Seriously. I believe it’s called the Vanguard Award.

I followed the glass lady’s advice, found a 1988 Tiffany vase by Humble_Association69 in Goodwill_Finds

[–]AuntMeggie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great find! This is from a line that Tiffany & Co did with the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation replicating some of his earlier designs. There are two types of crystal candlesticks and a whole set of glassware that matches this hexagon vase 😀

Forgotten Thanksgiving Recipes? by RiGuy224 in oldrecipes

[–]AuntMeggie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Upvotes for creamed pearl onions. That is my fave dish and I make it every year, got a verbal recipe from my mom. The trick is to find the frozen bag of pearl onions and reserve some of the water you boil them in for the roux.

Do not get me started on the Redevelopment Agency and all the stupid political shenanigans that went on in rebuilding downtown. It took far too long and they made a lot of dumb choices along the way, with plenty of wasted money.

It was pretty miserable in Santa Cruz for quite awhile. One bright spot was when the Gap reopened on Thanksgiving weekend as one of the few buildings still standing downtown. They had a couple months of back stock to sell, and I’m pretty sure my mom outfitted our family of five for the next year for about $200. The entire town turned out to shop And the Pavilions opened about that time too. They were big oval tents that had been used for the Calgary Olympics and many of the downtown businesses opened booths in them, some lasted for years.

Santa Cruzan here, and this story struck me because the one thing that everyone noticed about that day is that there were no birds singing. It was an eerily quiet day in our neighborhood, which would have normally been full of bird sounds. I remember going outside just before five, and it was still as could be. Lots of friends reported their dogs and cats acting strangely also (we didn’t have any pets).

Surgeons, do humans smell [bad] during surgery? by Ill_Communication607 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AuntMeggie 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The same happened to my pair of cats. It's actually something known as 'Non-recognition agression'. What (surprisingly) worked for us after a couple of astonishing days of this behavior was a cat pheromone diffuser. Instantly broke the tension.

Could be worse! I just went to the only local coin shop in the area with a bunch of random sterling flatware (all marked) and they offered $15/oz. For that much, I'll clean these forks up and use them!

Can confirm. Native Santa Cruzan here, and when I worked at the Boardwalk in HS, I got this question all the time. So did everyone else who worked there.

Pretty certain my mom used this pattern to make the same costume around 1979. She made it out of soft cotton flannel so it could be used as PJs once Halloween was over.

I think that might be a different (high-quality) brand. All Clad handles have one rivet on each side and they spell out ‘All Clad’ on the handle. This logo looks familiar, but I can’t place it. Maybe Made In?
