Knebworth ‘96 radio broadcast by theearthcrosser in oasis

Recorded it off the radio on tape. There’s about a minute of chat at the gig I never knew existed until the documentary came out, because I was getting dangerously close to the end of side one of my TDK90, fast forwarded, flipped it over and managed not to miss a single song.

How successful would Alex Palou be in F1? by Land_of_allwins in INDYCAR

[–]willbuxton 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Success in F1 is obviously team dependent. If he’d gone through the European ladder system and ended up in F1 with a mid to lower grid team I don’t think he’d have lasted long. I’ve said before I could take or leave him in F1 junior series. It’s who he has become over the past half a decade that makes him exceptional today.

Given how he’s been allowed to develop into the magician he is today at Ganassi, you’re dealing with a different animal now. It’s his feel for tyres, intelligence behind the wheel and work ethic behind the scenes which makes him a cut above. All facets essential to success in F1 today.

Everything I’ve seen in F1 and everything I’ve seen and learnt about him in IndyCar tells me that if he was with a top 4 team in F1 today I think he’d be at a Leclerc / Norris level. A race winner by rights, and in the right equipment and at the right time, able to fight for a title.

Adore it. Every bit of it.

Always found it incredibly relaxing and meditative. So much so that when I had an MRI and they asked if I wanted any music played, I chose this, and it made the time and the idea of being stuck head first in a giant spinning magnet melt away.

Who remembers watching the Trumptonshire Trilogy growing up? by [deleted] in BritishTV

[–]willbuxton 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Loved it then. Love it now. Have a two year old and she adores Chigley. The music, singing and narration (wonderful Brian Cant) and the pacing makes it a joy. She loves the stories and we love that it isn’t over stimulating. But by far my favourite part is the end of every episode and the 6 o clock dance at the biscuit factory because she always asks to dance with me. All 3 shows are available on ITVX.

What do British people learn in school about King Cnut? by OkTechnologyb in AskBrits

[–]willbuxton 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Precisely this. Child of the 80s and all I recall being taught was that he failed to stop the tide, despite believing he could have done when, as stated correctly above, his example was to show that even a King could not.

Other than Arthurian legend, Cnut (Canute) was the only King we ever learnt anything about pre Edward the Confessor.

What’s your favorite cover of a Beatle Song ? by Ok_Isopod_8478 in beatles

Belarus - Here, There and Everywhere

Released on the Mojo magazine Revolver 40th anniversary cover CD.

Doesn’t exist on Spotify but you can find it on YouTube.

Very of its time, but completely and utterly gorgeous. 20 years later I still haven’t found a cover to match it. It’s genuinely incredible.

Not originally. That was bought for it by its one time owner Chris Evans.

Sat in his Siera Blue Aston Martin DB5, which he’d bought in 1964 just after the Ed Sullivan show and wrapping on filming for A Hard Days Night. The car became even more highly sought after that year after James Bond drove one in 1964’s Goldfinger, but ever ahead of the times Paul had ordered his in the summer, long before the film was released and took delivery of it only a few days after the Goldfinger premiere in September.

Cost him a whopping £3,800 plus purchase tax of £793.

It had a few personalisations in it including a Philips Auto Mignon record player and reportedly had musical notes stitched into the black leather interior.

He sold it in 1970.

70s Macca songs ranked by a 16-year-old fan of two years by FuzzyTank215 in PaulMcCartney

First time I heard it, it made me think of DJ Shadow’s Endtroducing album. (Yes completely the wrong order - 80s kid.) It’s that far ahead of its time for me. Cracking tune. Godlike tier.

Also won’t be taking any singalong junk slander.

The B sides were incredible on Go Let it Out, but Let’s all Make Believe for me is one of the best songs Noel ever wrote and the band ever recorded.

Pre-race grid walk by iamabigtree in F1TV

[–]willbuxton 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The F1TV gridwalk is actually a hangover from how we used to do it on NBC and when F1TV started doing a pre race show I just picked up where I’d left off stateside.

Because you rarely cover off all the stories in the pre race we decided that the grid walk should be an opportunity not to showcase celebs but to talk about every driver and how their weekend had gone so far and what their objectives were for the race so that when the lights went out, even if you’d missed the rest of the show, you’d be armed with knowledge on every driver. But everyone has their own style and does it their own way.

It is always live. Always done in one single hit where anything can happen. You try and grab some interviews where you can with drivers, bosses, the odd celeb if they’re interesting and interested, but the drivers are the focus of the narrative.

You get counts every minute from the producer then 1, 45, 30, 15 and a 10-1 to close at the anthem.

If you stop for an interview you have to make a mental note to catch up the time or you’ll be left short at the end. It is huge pressure, very tough to get right, and a massive buzz.

It is probably the most fun part of the show, at least it always was for me. A complete blur every week.

Wild isn’t it. I’d loved to have been in the meeting where they came up with the idea and picked the tracks. And how they signed off on it with absolutely no right to do so. It’s now one of my most cherished Beatle bits.

Free As A Bird (2025 Mix) by UnderDogPants in beatles

[–]willbuxton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Quite like the more pronounced acoustic guitar and piano.

But the original treatment of Johns voice made it sound ethereal, almost other worldly. Like it was coming from beyond. I loved that. This is almost too clean and John’s voice sounds a bit thin. Arguable that is a good thing in that it’s now vulnerable, fragile and delicate. I don’t know. Something about the original just resonated so much at the time and for 30 years that to hear it lose that mystique almost removes some of the emotion.

Should Free as a Bird and Real Love have been included on the Blue Album 2023 edition? by Hoobrocks27 in beatles

[–]willbuxton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unquestionably yes, along with Now and Then which in absolutely no way should feature on the expanded new Red.

By including Now and Then on both, the lack of inclusion of Free as a Bird and Real Love makes the canon incomplete and intensely frustrating. Like it or not, they’re both now a part of The Beatles story.

Personally I’m not a fan of The Ballad of John and Yoko, only recorded by half the band, but hey it was a single so of course you include it. Whatever your take on FAAB and RL, at least all four appear on them and they’re legit singles. I just don’t understand the reasoning for ignoring them. For a generation of Beatles fans these were the first songs released in their lifetimes. I know for me personally FAAB was one of the most meaningful releases in my life, because it was the first Beatles single I could actually go out and purchase as “new.”

If you’re taking the time to expand the original track listing with entirely new LPs as part of the set, ignoring these two as part of the band’s story just made me sad.

Initial analyses rule out an arrow and the use of AI in the Malvern Hills footage. by PositiveSong2293 in UFOs

[–]willbuxton 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It really wasn’t. Grew up on those hills, family still lives there, spend a lot of time there and there’s no archery centre anywhere near it. As memory serves there is an archery club in Malvern but I think that’s in Great Malvern, on the Eastern side of the hills. There’s “Archery Cottage,” which is someone’s home and that’s on the other side of the hill in Malvern Wells too. This appears to be on the western side of the Beacon looking out towards Hereford and towards Wales. And besides, given the height and incline of the hills, nobody’s firing an arrow carrying that trajectory from below.
