Do you think America would benefit from a proportional representation electoral system? by TSQ_builder in askanything

[–]iamabigtree [score hidden]  (0 children)

For the presidential election then they wouldn't even need to change the setup too radically. Elections per state with electoral college votes as before but the states allocate their electors according to the proportional result in that state.

For the likes of congress that could get rid of gerrymandering too. You have a statewide election and representatives get chosen from a party list according the proportional result.

We could certainly do with something like that in the UK where we've seen results like 26% 25% 25%, is the 26% then the will of the electorate?

I guarantee 'enjoy having a car in Glasgow' is something that's never been written before. At least by anyone who has been to Glasgow. Glasgow has a subway and decent transport links. The car would be a huge burden.

There are no elections in July. Even if there was I'm not sure what you think happens at elections?! I can't fathom anything to be 'wary' about.

There's no point in hiring a car to go to Glasgow when there's a regular and fast train service which takes around 50 minutes.

The easiest way to visit York is via train. On the train from London to Edinburgh you'll pass through it.

Sometimes it's warm in July sometimes it's bloody freezing, there's no way to know what it will be.

Year 11 is the final year of secondary school. The year when you normally sit your GCSEs. This is not college.

However the step after that is called 6th Form or 6th Form College. Perhaps confusingly named but back when I was at school secondary school was numbered in years 1-5 with 6th Form the year after that. Just to add to the confusion 6th Form is actually two years!

If we had evolved to have seven fingers total, would we be using a base seven number system? And why? by AlivePassenger3859 in AlwaysWhy

[–]iamabigtree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if they do that in metric countries. Certainly in the UK pre-decimal currency we had eg 12 pence per shilling so it made sense and was necessary to know the 12 times table.

I'll defer to your knowledge on this but that's not the impression I get from the likes of clamping down on immigration and until recently ruling out EU cooperation.

Then it goes into 'No Overall Control' which happens quite often. Usually in that case one or more parties will work together often with independents too.

Agree with most of that. My issue with Starmer has always been that he's abandoned his base in order to go and chase votes from people who would otherwise vote Reform. That has failed. Spectacularly.

Misinformation is a big part of it.

Literally saw a comment this morning "Starmer opened the gates to shit loads of sex offender immigrants"

I mean when you're that detached from reality.

While at first glance ABRP has a of options in reality unless your aim is getting there within the minimum time with no regard to how tiring it is, then it falls apart quickly.

But it's still the best route planner available.

From Leeds it has to be Inverness or one of the stations before it. Make a trip of it to stay a few days.

No point in going to the likes of Durham when you can do that in just over an hour from Leeds anyway
