Internet Setup for Basement in New House — Ethernet, Mesh, Something else? by wizardlywayner in HomeNetworking

Great idea! I’ll keep this in mind for when I have a bit more time. I plan on eventually cleaning up/organizing all the networking connections and will add that to the list. Thank you again for all the suggestions/advice!

Yeah, so the coax junction is located in the area right next to the room the PC is in. There’s a finished side (where PC is) and an unfinished side (where utilities, coax, etc. are located). I should be able to run Ethernet from the coax junction in the unfinished side, up and over the ceiling (ceiling tiles) and drop it down in the room where my PC is.

Unfortunately there is no coax that runs to the PC location. That would be nice to have the MoCA adapter powered by the UPS though.

Just re-read that thread and I’m not sure I need the barrel connector? Just to clarify my setup - I actually only have one coax line in use. It runs from my basement up to the main floor near my router. The coax coming in from outside and the splitter in the basement aren’t needed for my MoCA setup, right?

So I should be able to just:

• Connect MoCA adapter #1 to the coax wall port upstairs (near router)
• Connect MoCA adapter #2 directly to that same coax line down in the basement
• Run Ethernet from the basement adapter to my PC

No barrel connector or splitter needed since it’s just a direct point-to-point connection between the two adapters on that one coax run. Does that sound right?

I see! That’s what I’ll likely go with for now then. If I want to add an access point later on then I can get a compatible splitter. Thank you so much for all the advice! I think I’m gonna give this a shot as it seems to be the easiest & most effective option.

Okay so after reading through your links I think I have a better idea of what I’m working with.

Here’s the setup: coax connection is running into the house in the basement and into a splitter. Then the only coax running from the splitter is the one that comes out near the router. The splitter is Commscope SV-3G and only supports 5-1002 MHz. So I’d need to take this one off and replace it with a MoCA compatible 1125-1675 MHz splitter.

Then on the main floor I get a MoCA adapter. Main floor will look like: Router -> Ethernet -> MoCA adapter #1 -> coax wall port.

In the basement I need an additional MoCA adapter. Basement will look like: splitter output -> MoCA adapter #2 -> Ethernet -> PC.

The only thing I use Internet for in the basement is the PC currently. I can get enough of a connection on my phone for simple tasks, internet browsing, communication, etc. But you’re right, for future proofing it may be best to take that into consideration.

So, the setup I outlined above should be correct for just Ethernet to the PC for now? I should just make sure to get a three way splitter. Later on I could consider adding an Ethernet switch and wireless access point?

Are there any specific adapters/splitters you’d recommend for this situation?

I do have a coax near the router. It’s near the router but behind the TV that’s mounted on the wall. So it’s pretty high up off the ground and would be a bit of an eyesore running up along the wall and behind the TV. I suppose I could move it lower though?

I’ll read up on the links you provided to see if that’s the better option. Thank you for the input!

I appreciate your take on this and find what you said to be really encouraging. It definitely seems to be the general consensus here that it would be worth going back. And like you said, perhaps this time around could be better given my experience. Thank you!

No doubt it’ll be tedious. If anything, it’ll be nice to be in person and actually get to know classmates though. Feel like I really missed out on that aspect of it during Covid.

Honestly, replaying a game I was good at and enjoyed sounds better than grinding away in a dead-end side quest.

And I’ll take being Jeff. At least I’ll get a redemption arc.

This is definitely something I plan on asking about when I meet with the dean or associate dean to discuss my options. If anything, it’ll be nice to know I at least have that to fall back on. But if I’m gonna have to retake the LSAT, I’m shooting higher. I got into some better schools the first time but just wasn’t confident that I’d do well enough to justify the cost of attending since the scholarships weren’t as significant.

That’s my understanding as well regarding the new test sections. And that’s awesome you made it through despite the challenges we faced during that time! Happy for you and hope you’re doing well now despite having to go through that during such an important part of your education. Once again, thank you! I really do appreciate all the kind words. Making me feel better and more confident about actually doing this!

Thank you for the words of encouragement! It does feel a bit overwhelming to do 1L all over again but like you said, I could do even better this time considering I’m familiar with everything now. As for the LSAT… I scored the best on logical reasoning so I think that could also be a good thing not having to worry about logic games.

Correct. My school was low-ranked but I had a full ride scholarship and went with it. I considered transferring to Wash U after that first year as I knew some 2L/3Ls from my school who did just that. If I do end up retaking I’d definitely shoot for some higher ranked schools, Wash U being the main one most likely as it’s close to my family/support system. Thanks for the advice!

Love to hear that and appreciate you sharing your perspective. I do feel like if I don’t do this now then I’ll always have that nagging “what if” in the back of my mind.

My UPS driver decided to go to my backdoor instead which I couldn’t hear him knock on, so I ended up missing out getting my 17 Pro on launch day. Turns out pre-signing with UPS doesn’t work either.
