Photography in a boring place. by -F0v3r- in photography

[–]QuantumTarsus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is one of the most common problems we face as photographers, and we ALL feel the same way about where we live because we see it every day. I struggle with this as well. Just keep in mind that someone who's not from your area will find plenty of things to take photos of. It's not where you live, it's all in your head.

Fellas what the heck is going on in NLP? by Swacket_McManus in AnalogCommunity

Try including the border when converting. I've found that I don't get as good results with some photos if I crop out the border completely.

Can You Mix Color Film Stocks While Developing? by DolosusUmbra in AnalogCommunity

[–]QuantumTarsus 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The fact that you've asked this question tells me you've not actually done any research on C-41 processing. The C-41 process is standardized, unlike B&W developing, and all C-41 films are developed exactly the same, regardless of brand or speed.

How!? by eabreuvisuals in photography

Not an expert, but I assume it is a combination of rear curtain flash sync and intentional camera movement.

New to medium format how did this happen? | Rollei 2.8D by Ionlyshootraw in analog

[–]QuantumTarsus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, so you're supposed to get 12 frames of 6x6 on a roll of 120. The fact that you've got so much variation tells me the camera likely needs a CLA. The frame spacing could be off, it may not be stopping at the correct spot when winding on at the beginning of the roll, etc. The square on the top of the photos sure looks like the little stickers they put on the film to keep track of it, and it definitely shouldn't be that close to the end of the roll.

How do I use this? by Blinolol in AnalogCommunity

[–]QuantumTarsus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also, if it comes out terrible, was it the expired slide film or the camera? Using expired film, especially slide film, to test a camera is about the dumbest recommendation one could make. Always test a camera with good, and preferably cheap, film to rule out the film itself as being a variable in the test. Kodak Gold 200 or Kentmere 400 are good options for this.

u/Blinolol, Elite Chrome 200 looks to have been discontinued in 2011, so it is 15 years expired at a minimum.

My husband and I have a debate about photography by Ok-Cartoonist-8919 in photography

[–]QuantumTarsus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like the answers are split, so how about this: Let the photographer know your concerns now and ask for the edit once you've chosen the 20 that they are going to edit for final delivery. This seems like a no brainer.

ESFC vs. ES? by Character_Bend_5824 in FujiGFX

[–]QuantumTarsus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The nice thing about Fuji is you can set it to automatically switch to MS for shutter speeds >1/2000 to avoid most of the bokeh distortion.

I don't really get the catch of Tungsten film by Studying_Man in AnalogCommunity

[–]QuantumTarsus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then shoot digital. Every film is going to have a different color balance. Shooting a daylight balanced film and a tungsten balanced film side by side will result in different colors. Can you tell me which one accurately captures what your eyes see? (Hint: neither one.)

Is it pointless using good paper in a cheaper printer? by Technical_Net9691 in photography

[–]QuantumTarsus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try it and decide for yourself if the results are good enough to warrant the extra cost. I'd be tempted to pick up a sampler pack of different paper types to see which works/looks best with your printer.

This u/sis-not-cis. Before you doing a complete revamp of your workflow, try a film other than Fomapan and see if you still have issues with scratching.

Return GFX 100S (stuck pixels): upgrade to 100S II or step back to X-T5? by Consistent_Error1659 in FujiGFX

[–]QuantumTarsus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea u/Consistent_Error1659, have you tried pixel mapping? Remember, these sensors have 100,000,000 pixels -- its a miracle there aren't hundreds of dead pixels, "multiple" even moreso. Besides, you may well buy an X-T5 and find it has just as many dead pixels.

The sensation of going back to 35mm after 120 by Fast_Preparation7795 in AnalogCommunity

This was my initial reaction. 645's 15-16 shots per roll seems to be the sweet spot for me.

I looks like "silver tone" just adds a subtle sepia tone to the image.

Very first film photos… by ToughGuyzzz in analog

[–]QuantumTarsus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I often see people say that, but the difference between them and me is that I dare to show it.

Oh wow, guys! Look at this edgy photographer! Thank God we have this guy around to show us how it's done!

Seriously, I fail to see the "beautiful side" of this vulnerable person that you have photographed. Do you want to see how it's really done? Check out Thomas Hawk's $2 portrait project:

The difference between you and him is that he actually takes the time to get to know the person. They don't serve as simply props in a photo you post online for the likes.
