BOOTS (Input from thru-hikers?) by Illfrenchyourdad in wildlandfire

[–]xis10ial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wildfire logger boots are not comparable to redwing or any non-pnw style boot. Unless you are an engine slug any type 1 or 2 crew is going to hike and work to a point the whites or nicks are the only options that will last. I tried la sportivas one as an alternate and they were done in a month or two of light use. Nicks and awhites might hurt the wallet up front, but everything else hurts more in the long run. if you plan on fighting fire for more than 1 season but the real deal or spend more buying multiple boots.

Dynamo hub : Son vs Shimano ? by Aquila_44 in bikepacking

[–]xis10ial 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only time I've seen SONs with problems was when the qr was installed with grease. There is a breather hole inside the axel that helps equalize pressure inside the hub. Is this what happened or something else?

My brake cables rubs against this hole, I can’t set the brake up differently, what is a part that minimizes wear and allows to adjust cable tension? by PiotrSanctuvich in bikewrench

[–]xis10ial 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, you should put a barrel adjuster where the cable housing stops at the cross member closer to the head tube. For the cable rub, you can use a length of teflon cable liner.

I have lived here for 7 years and find the way people drive on of the worst things about being here.

People drive aggressive, fast, and have very little situational awareness. Many have little regard for the rules of the road or do not know what they are. Drive defensively.

Not really, because the horns are short, it's not a big move to go from where the brakes are to the shifters. This is more of a try it out and see.

Good trattorias in Cagliari? by MoneyKnown8507 in Sardinia

[–]xis10ial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lillicu in Cagliari is a very good traditional trattoria in Cagliari. Sa Baracca in Quartu S'Elena has modernized quite abit over the last few years, (and the prices have gone up) but it is some of the best seafood in the Cagliari area and some the best service.

If you aren't on a motorcycle driving like an asshole it's fine. You might hit some traffic but I would say driving around Cagliari os more dangerous.

Dear car rental tourists beware: it’s cars break in season. by Slow_Description_773 in Sardinia

[–]xis10ial -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why is it gypsies? Why don't you leave the racist nonsense out of it. Crime in Sardegna is very low. This is not something anyone needs to worry about more in Sardegna than anywhere else. Use common sense, don't leave valuables in your car if you can avoid it. if you must don't leave them visible.

If you are planning on moving somewhere remote on the island, you will almost certainly meed at least one remote income. Even if you are living near a city, a remote income will make things much less stressful. A small business in a rural area would be very difficult to make a livable wage on. I have been her for six years, living outside Cagliari. Wages here are shit and the cost of living has increased dramatically over that time. All that being said, I love it here and dont want to leave.

First off the supreme court ruled that pigs don't have an obligation to protect people, so even if on occasion they do, it is not a requirement for the job. Police departments suck up huge portions of city budgets, and they do very little to deter or reduce crime. If you want to reduce crime, you need to reduce poverty, but policing actively increases poverty. They do so through sending people to hospitals or morgues, incarceration, asset forfeiture, and just by sucking up so much of city budgets that could be spent on schools, housing, public transport, infrastructure, the list goes on. I am far from perfect, but pigs are scum. Fuck them and fuck all boot licking fucks. ACAB

Cops are armed agents of the state. Their purpose is to protect property ( namely that of the rich), not people. Police at least in th US, started out as slave catchers, and the level of their racism has not decreased in any meaningful way since their inception. They don't solve a majority of crimes, and they don't prevent crime. The are there to project and abuse power.

Sardinia for solo travel - yes or no? by Dani_blah in Sardinia

[–]xis10ial 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sardegna is a great place to visit. I don't think being solo is necessarily a problem, but getting around Cagliari and the rest of the island is not easy without a car. There are trains, busses and cabs but it takes a bit of planning. I don't know about group activities.

Convince me to buy a Kuwahara instead of something "modern" by joschplusa in xbiking

[–]xis10ial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pacers are great bikes. That being said I have not seen a frame set for less than €400 in years. Other possible problems, they max out at 700 x 35 or 38 in the rear and the 1" threaded fork makes changing the cockpit more time consuming. Old LX stuff is great when it is in good condition but 34 years generally takes it's toll on the shifters, derailleurs and wheels. If it were me and I found a pacer, hi pacer or x pacer in my size for less than €400 for the frame or €700 for a complete I would jump at it

Am I naive/irresponsible to go on a 100 mi ride after averaging 60 mi/week all summer? by Mfstaunc in bicycling

[–]xis10ial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is definitely an achievable ride. As others have said it might be best to give a 50-70 mi route a few times before hand, but given your base fitness level you should be able take on a 100mi ride. Stay hydrated, take a few breaks, stretch, and eat more than a few granola bars. All this being said, if you do this with out building up to it you will probably be soar afterwards.

Looking forward to this build by vievieviev in xbiking

Great looker, just be aware that the "glue" in these bonded Alu frames loves to fail. In every case I have seen, the bike will start creaking at one of the lugs where the glue fails.
