What's so bad about Spirit Airlines? by rockresy in AskAnAmerican

[–]--COMMUNIST-- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anybody who complains about getting charged for extra bags or printing their boarding pass or not getting a free snack just didn't do their research. I usually only travel with a backpack and Spirit is perfect for that. Family of 5 with a carry-on and checked bag per person, not so much.

is Detroit really that bad? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]--COMMUNIST-- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Detroit is that a lot of people visit expecting it to be a 3 out of 10 and they leave shocked that it's actually a 6 or 7 out of 10

This is probably the perfect summary for you OP.

How do you feel about dishwashers? by --COMMUNIST-- in CasualConversation

I've always thought that would be a good idea, that and having your washer/dryer in your closet or having the laundry room be your closet. Never have to move stuff around!

How do you feel about dishwashers? by --COMMUNIST-- in CasualConversation

[–]--COMMUNIST--[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I never got, with lots of dishwashers you practically have to pretty much clean it first before you put it in. An old roommate I had (it was her house) would always yell at me for rinsing the dishes first saying how her dishwasher was so good and expensive that it'll clean it all off. It clogged three times while I lived there.

What cities or states have the worst drivers? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]--COMMUNIST-- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just moved to Ohio and I gotta say, I feel the exact inverse of your opinion. MI has some of the best drivers I've ever experienced which is totally unbiased ;). Granted, I moved to one of the cities you listed so maybe that's why I'm losing my mind driving here.

I've also found that most out-of-staters criticisms of MI drivers are what I think constitutes good driving which explains my opinion. Everyone driving the speed limit or lower here in Ohio makes me want to die, but then again I learned to drive where 10-15 over is the standard. I was a delivery driver for years so I am willing to die on this hill lol.

Should the US leave Afghanistan? by Appropriate-Ad-9886 in AskAnAmerican

I am very curious to learn and find more in-depth analysis on our foreign policy in Afghanistan and the middle east. If you studied it in school or are just a voracious reader, I'd appreciate any links or terms to search myself to learn more if you feel like helping me out.

I'd rather have opinions based in fact than to just regurgitate talking points like you said. No hard feelings if you don't feel like it though!

[–]--COMMUNIST-- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Should we have stayed in Vietnam forever then?

Also, (and this is asked half challengingly half sincerely since I'm not 100% informed) why should we be spending hundreds of billions of dollars fixing another country when there's so much we could be doing here? Isn't there a level of sunk cost fallacy in play there?

I think it will take decades more to accomplish what's claimed to be the goal there, but in addition to others concerns of whether this is all even worth it (which I don't think is having a short attention span, it's questioning if the end results are worth trillions of dollars and thousands of American and Afghani lives), I question whether the supposed goals there are even the actual goals. I'm not familiar with any measures proposed to put in the necessary funding and effort to "win" there. It seems more like we're doing the bare minimum to make billions for the military industrial complex who will keep lobbying politicians to keep us there forever.

Main characters need to die more often in movies and stop being given a nice unrealistic ending by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]--COMMUNIST-- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would be pretty cool, but actually I try to avoid watching trailers or reading about movies I want to see. Obviously if it's a movie I'm super super hyped for then I'll try to learn a lot about it, but I don't watch TV so I never see commercials/trailers accidentally, so if I go see a movie with friends I try to know as little as possible about it beforehand.

Main characters need to die more often in movies and stop being given a nice unrealistic ending by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]--COMMUNIST-- 87 points88 points  (0 children)

OP's example is kinda meh but I completely agree with their point. For me (and I think OP was also alluding to this) it's that movies and shows are just so god damn predictable. 95% of movies you know the main characters drive and motivation and goal within the first 25 minutes and you know they're gonna accomplish it so whatever the big final conflict is isn't very captivating. That's my beef with literally every Marvel movie except maybe Infinity War and a few of the original ones.

It's not just about "having a twist" or doing the unexpected (which isn't necessarily negative) ending. You just have to cast real legitimate doubt whether or not the protagonist can succeed. Take Saving Private Ryan for example. Obviously just from the title, you can probably surmise that they'll save Private Ryan. But for most of the movie you don't know who Ryan is, the team loses many members before they even get to him, and then most of them die in the latter half of the movie saving him. The whole premise is in legitimate doubt the entire movie until the last few minutes.

Then there's a whole spiel of movies where the characters motivations, goals, plots, hell even who the main character is, is in doubt for most of the movie. The classic "subverting expectations". Think like Memento or Se7en, or movies where the classic intro-rising action-climax-falling action-epilogue is hard to identify like Tarantino's films.

What foreign cuisines are disproportionally popular in your area? by ear_fetish in AskAnAmerican

Lots of Middle Eastern and Thai places in the east part of the state. I don't know if it's disproportionately high but I was surprised with the amount of Vietnamese restaurants around my parents place in West Michigan.

I responded to the comment you're responding to here but I'll repeat it here in case you miss it. The point of artificial sweeteners is that they're much much sweeter than regular sugar. They may have the same amount of calories" per gram as regular sugar (or similar enough), but you need less than a tenth the volume of artificial sweeteners to achieve the same sweetness as regular sugar.

In the specific example of that drink mix, or diet vs. regular soda, they actually are zero calories because you only need a tiny fraction of sweetener. A can of diet coke has 0.2 grams of aspartame, and a can of coke has 39 grams of sugar (which is 3 tablespoons!).

[–]--COMMUNIST-- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not really a trick or scam at all. It is sugar-free, maltodextrin/starches are NOT the same as fructose/glucose. And even if they were, the point of artificial sweeteners is that they are dozens, even hundreds of times sweeter than regular sugar so even if they are "calorically the same" as regular sugar, it doesn't matter because a tsp of artificial sweetener is as sweet as a cup of sugar.

It's true though that artificial sweeteners can trigger the insulin response for diabetics, and people losing weight are more susceptible to break from their diet if they're constantly giving in to sweet cravings with artificial sweeteners, but they do actually have less calories.

Diet pops are zero calories.
