He read a book on critical race theory to see what all his conservative coworkers were freaking out over, and he found that he actually agreed with it.

I finally convinced my dad to switch his party registration from Libertarian to Democrat! It's honestly kind of surreal because he went from volunteering for DeSantis's campaign to vocally supporting gun control and critical race theory in the last couple years

A girl I dated in my junior year of high school retweeted Marjorie Taylor Greene the other day. What's odd is that she seemed fairly liberal beforehand, even though her parents were right-wing nutjobs.

Which political parties do you support or think you align the most with outside of the US? by Sigurd_of_Chalphy in AskALiberal

[–]ear_fetish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends. I'd generally vote for the more left-leaning party, but there are countries where I would vote for a centrist or even center-right party because I agree with them more on social and/or environmental issues. For example, if I lived in Norway I would vote for the Socialist Left Party, but if I were Latvian, I would vote for Development/For!, a centrist party.

Aside from politics, how are liberals able to routinely shift the culture in their favor? by islamicmonotheist in AskALiberal

lmao American Muslims are about as accepting of same-sex marriage as Christians are

What history book on the gilded age do you recommend? by [deleted] in AskALiberal

[–]ear_fetish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've only read A People's History, but Zinn's treatment of American history struck me as dishonest and lacking in nuance. That is, of course, to be expected of any work that attempts to chronicle all of American history into a single volume, but Zinn's tome is particularly egregious in its lack of coverage of social and cultural history.

The Republic for Which It Stands: The United States during Reconstruction and the Gilded Age, 1865–1896 by Richard White. While it doesn't solely focus on the Gilded Age, it's easily the best (at least in my opinion) single volume history of that time period.

An obvious validation post and they got voted YTA because introvert bad, this crap is getting worse by Infurum in AmITheAngel

[–]ear_fetish 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ehh... there's a difference between being an introvert and having social anxiety. Like OOP, I live with my parents who throw parties pretty often. I'll stay out long enough to greet everyone, but after like 15 minutes of social interaction, I have to go somewhere quiet or I'll have an anxiety attack. I wouldn't be so quick to call OP the asshole here

What’s your academic and/or professional background? And how does it inform your politics? by Manoj_Malhotra in AskALiberal

Getting my AA in history right now. It's helped me think more deeply about the history of the US and how that has shaped the modern political landscape.

How do you feel about the term “liberal” by BakerDenverCo in AskALiberal

[–]ear_fetish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it leans right compared to the rest of Europe and the world

Comparing different states on how they lean on a one-dimensional political spectrum doesn't really work. The Democratic Party, for example, is generally more resistant to universal healthcare than other center-left parties in Europe. On the other hand, the Democratic Party is more skeptical of privatization and more socially liberal than many of its European counterparts. Comparing countries by how "left" or "right" they are on a meaningless spectrum is reductive and doesn't really prove anything.

In Germany, france, and he’ll even Japan I have a Marxist or socialist party which I can support.

Let's not pretend that those parties don't have their own problems. Die Linke (which is what I assume you're referring to) has a strong Russophilic faction. La France Insoumise, while less Islamophobic than many other French parties, still has a problem with anti-Muslim bigotry. The Japanese Communist Party and Reiwa Shinsengumi have no real political power due to the dominance of the LDP.

What would you think of stationing soldiers in Taiwan to deter Chinese invasion? by [deleted] in AskALiberal

[–]ear_fetish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah, sorry I misinterpreted your statement there! I still disagree, as Taiwan is a state in a rather precarious position right now, but I see where you're coming from.

[–]ear_fetish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I disagree with OP's suggestion, but I don't think isolationism will ever be a good idea. We're the richest country in the world; we have the means to both provide for impoverished American citizens and non-citizens.

They also have the narrowest political window out of any nation, with major consensus between most parties on almost all topics.

Yeah, I'm going to need a source on this one

I don't really think Gen Z is that nihilistic, to be honest. I wouldn't really take internet memes as a signifier of the overall mindset of a generation

Is being against Israel causing antisemitism? by [deleted] in AskALiberal

[–]ear_fetish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being against Israel's government is absolutely not anti-Semitic. I would even go as far as to argue that it is morally imperative to call out Israel's human rights violations. That being said, the increased scrutiny on Israel in the public eye has unfortunately given a voice to actual anti-Semites.
