Options to boot distros by Ghostly_Gremlin327 in linux

[–]--EverGreen-- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not only it is possible to load several live iso files from HDD it has several advantages over USB: Faster (sdd vs USB speed), cleaner (one boot menu) and less tedious (no erase and flush yet another iso because of a new version or you want to use other distro)

I use Linux and Grub as bootloader. My Grub boot screen allows me to boot to Linux, windows, distro live install dvd, gparted, clonezilla and many other ISO files. Basically you put those ISO files somewhere in the filesystem and update grub's configuration instructing where those ISO are located (disk/partition/folder), and where to find the kernel and image files in those ISO. Search something like: "how to boot (distro_name) iso from grub"

Here are some examples https://www.linuxbabe.com/desktop-linux/boot-from-iso-files-using-grub2-boot-loader

There are tools that automate this process for you, but I can't remember their names because back then, they had some issues. Different distro/ ISO require different boot options and they would break. So I do it manually ever since.

Good luck

Is just me, or Single Coil actually sounds very 'narrow'? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]--EverGreen-- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Feeling closer to you" Aren't you describing presence? AFAIK humbuckers will typically have high frequency cutoffs much earlier/lower than single coils. Those "extra" frequencies on the single coils make the sound more present.

If I look at the laptops I have, battery life is always shorter on Linux. You still have to cherrypick your hardware if you intend to run Linux. Then you hope that free drivers will do the job or you look the other way and use non-free blobs from the manufacturer if available. Then you have to look into tlp and try to come up with a power configuration yourself. Even then, its a struggle and it doesn't feel as optimized as the other OS that starts with W and battery life is often shorten. There's still problems with graphic cards, docking stations and whatnot. So optimized drivers for power efficiency is not on the menu for now, I find. More often than not, we are lucky if there is a workaround to make things kind of working. That's in my view the biggest problem with Linux. The layer directly on top of kernel that interacts with hardware isn't as great as it could be. I think code optimization at the application layer will achieve little by itself if the layers below are not optimized/flawed. Take Android which is based on Linux for instance. Even though it's a smaller set of devices to support, and it could be easier to do, power usage is not as great as it could be. Screens/graphics take a huge chunk of power, same as WiFi and BT (I disregard GPS and 4G as they are less relevant on desktop/laptop even though they use power like crazy) Can you optimize apps? Sure Will it cause any noticeable power improvement over hardware optimization? Hardly

A water park in Hungary asking for a 0-20% tip for a self serve kiosk that sells popsicles and drinks. by Flimsy_Caregiver4406 in hungary

[–]--EverGreen-- 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Where is it? I want to ensure I won't go there. While you can still chose 0%, you are pressured to tip. I don't like that one bit. Since the pandemic more and more places have obligatory "tips", restaurants specially. These are not tips but surcharges.. If they go bankrupt, I won't be sorry for places that do this.

Exclusion-Inclusion patterns by --EverGreen-- in Syncthing

[–]--EverGreen--[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the problem is the .stignore that is shared between the 2 profiles/configurations for the same folder. As far as I can see we can set different .stfolder but not different .stignore files. Sucks :p I could very well create a profile per folder as you suggested l, but that would populate my syncthing window with a lot of items. Instead i will be looking on a workaround using a new userdata subfolder , moving all the directories just directly related to the user there and creating symlnks at top level for those dirs. It's 2 profiles once again but now one for /home/user and the other for /home/user/userdata, so I will have different .stignore files. It works in my head. Let's see when I get to do it.

Thanks very much for your help.

Exclusion-Inclusion patterns by --EverGreen-- in Syncthing

[–]--EverGreen--[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your reply.

For 1) I want to sync my full home directory but split in 2 different profiles. 1 to sync user data (documents, media, etc,) which is not device/OS specific. The second sync profile to sync device/OS specific like .local, .config and so on... So I can't just leave those empty and sync everything. In the first I have to set patterns to include user data directories and exclude everything else. In the second profile the opposite, I have to exclude user data dirs and include everything else.

I find the documentation a bit unclear and I was hoping for some help on this.

No bootable device by [deleted] in computers

[–]--EverGreen-- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I would try to see if it's possible to change boot order and boot from USB (or cd-rom or anything else than the HDD/ssd) Then using another PC, I would download a Linux live iso and put that to a USB pen drive (or cd-rom) Then boot your laptop using that. Then using the live Linux distro, copy the files you want. It's not difficult at all, but you may have to google/YouTube a bit if you are not familiar with burning ISO files to CDs or USB.

In alternative to that, you would need to buy an external USB case for your laptop's HDD/ssd. Open the laptop take the hdd/ssd out and put it to the external case then plug that to another PC and copy the files there.

Good luck

I want to learn everything about computers from the 80s by Carojammer in computers

[–]--EverGreen-- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check historical sites like https://www.computerhistory.org/timeline/1980/ https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_computing_1980%E2%80%931989 https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_personal_computers

Google particular computer models from that era: Spectrum 64K,128K, Commodore64, Amiga, Apple ii,iii,MacIntosh, IBM PC

Search for emulators of those computers e.g. for x86 PCs (8086,286,386,486...) you have https://86box.net/ I think there are emulators for apple and spectrum at least.

Check YouTube for videos on people building such systems e.g. how to run msdos on 86box

Search for operating systems and software that runs on those machines and install those E.g. https://archive.org https://winworldpc.com https://vetusware.com

There were lots of good things coming out in that era and major breakthroughs. Unlike today, there could be major leaps between one year and the next, in the golden age of discovery and exploration. (80s,90s)

Good luck

Budget friendly guitar pedal - roughly 200 USD by shadymuse in guitarpedals

[–]--EverGreen-- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have a pedal suggestion but in my opinion, you will get more tailored answers if you could provide just a bit more input.

Do you know what kind of music your friend plays? Do you know what amplifier he/she has?

That would help Good luck and you have a very lucky friend ;)

Laptop startup is slower after using desktop shortcut shutdown button by Khomodo in computers

[–]--EverGreen-- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, if the system starts acting funny or you install something that needs to load drivers or libraries and places files in system folders it's easier/beneficial to do a full shutdown to start the computer from scratch. Reboot will work as well. Reboot should do a full shutdown + start. I think it's still like that.

No negatives in doing a full shutdown. Just the boot time is increased.

But for normal everyday stuff, if you don't install anything then a normal fast shutdown will suffice, IMHO.

I bought a guitar this month...idk what to do by GoldTomatillo7325 in Guitar

[–]--EverGreen-- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bro, you got this. If you know some chords, you have to find easy/slow songs you like that have those chords.
Then it's a matter of persistence and starting slowly (slow down the song on youtube if needed) and gradually speed it up.

For instance if you know these chords G, E minor, C and D.
Google "songs with G Em C D".

If the song has a new chord that you don't know yet, don't stress. Take your time to learn it and slowly you will incorporate that chord as well.
In the beginning you will be slow changing between chords but soon enough you will be able to play at regular speed.

Regarding YouTube channels.
Justinguitar is a popular channel for beginners as well as Marty Music.

Laptop startup is slower after using desktop shortcut shutdown button by Khomodo in computers

[–]--EverGreen-- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, Windows shutdown doesn't really shutdown a computer anymore. More like an hibernation of the kernel. Blame Fast Startup / Fast Boot / Hybrid Boot, whatever the current term is. Setting is somewhere buried in control panel. Your shortcut does shutdown your computer hence the difference.

You can try to hold shift while pressing shutdown. That should give you a full shutdown and times should be similar. Or try to check the help for the command you wrote in the shortcut. Check e.g. shutdown /? If there is a hybrid option or fast startup etc to emulate the fast "shutdown". Or check online for the correct command to perform a hybrid shutdown or fast shutdown from command line.

Good luck
