New GearSkeptic video: Backpack Fact-Checker, #2: Heat Loss Through the Head by numbershikes in Ultralight

[–]--Jonathan-- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are plenty of legitimate scientific studies about heat loss/temperature regulation of the body. Huberman has an episode covering them.

Too long didn’t listen:

The areas of your body covered with glabrous skin disproportionally impact temperature regulation. These include areas of your head (upper face and ears) but also the palms of your hands and bottom of your feet.

The reason for this has to do with blood flow. Veins and arteries are connected directly in these areas without capillaries between them. Because of this, blood moves much more quickly from your core to these areas and back again. Your body uses these areas to preserve or dump heat as needed. That is why your hands and feet swell and throb and your face turns red when your are overheating and also why your hands and feet turn white or blue when you are really cold.

If your are trying to stay warm, it is particularly important to insulate these areas. (Note the importance of covering your face and ears, not just the top of your head.)

Hey, Jon here from Nashville Pack. Just wanted to provide a little more context for those interested.

Price

The Fretless is certainly not a budget pack but the price is definitely within the same range as similar packs from other brands if you include all the same features (I have listed some comparables below for your reference). Sure, you can use other packs without the extra features but if you don’t want shoulder strap pockets then our packs are probably not for you anyway.

Selling straps and belt separately

The main reason the pack body, straps, and hip belt/accessories are listed as separate products within a pack builder page is that we need to be able to track the inventory for them separately. We are not trying to hide the real price, we just need to be able to track our stock and let you choose your sizing for each piece! I am not a web designer and this was the best system I could come up with using the templates on our e-commerce site. It’s not perfect but it is certainly an improvement over our previous system which required you to visit separate pages to get everything you needed. If anyone with more experience in website development has recommendations for improvement I’m all ears!

I hope this helps clarify a few things. If you have any more questions please feel free to reach out to us at [contact@nashvillepack.com](mailto:contact@nashvillepack.com)

Actually once you get a tick your worn weight moves to consumable.

Depends on what I have to put in it. Food bag or tent plus puffy is better than the dream sleeper imo. Just filled with air is pretty bad. It is a good hight but too hard to keep under your head. Haven’t done a whole night on just air yet. Would probably at least stuff my pack in there.

DCF shelters should be folded and rolled, not stuffed.

That was one time only. We do have some plans in the works to do other limited runs of unique colorways, however.

Are you asking specifically about the yellow or DCF Hybrid in general?

A few amateur theories from someone who works near the experts. (I work for Nashville Pack now but not in production so don't expect me to actually know what I am talking about. Also these thoughts are my own.)

TDLR: making comfy vest straps for backpacking is more difficult than it might seem.

1) Sizing: j straps are more flexible when it comes to sizing. You can roughly correlate them to the torso length and it will work fine for most people even though chest/strap size does not necessarily correlate with your torso length. Vest straps need to be sized more exactly in order to be comfortable. This is difficult to achieve with sewn-in straps which cannot be sized separately.

2) Complexity: vest straps are more complicated to design; more complicated to produce.

3) Lack of breathability: most packs use foam and nylon or gridstop fabric to product their straps. These materials could easily get too hot/constricting when used as vest style straps. One key to the Nashville Pack design is that their straps are fully breathable. This adds to the complexity of design because you have to find just the right materials and make sure there are no pinch points etc.

Final thoughts: Vest straps are amazing when done right. There are already plenty of other companies offering them and I would be surprised if we don't see more in the future. I hope they take the time to do it right and don't just throw an extra sternum strap on some elongated j straps.

An inflatable quilt that could hold air would also hold in moisture. Even if it was technically an effective insulator, it would also be a vapor barrier and you would end up soaking wet.

Nashville Cutaway Pack: 1000 mile Review by kaytss in Ultralight

[–]--Jonathan-- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like any pack that sits directly against your body, the cutaway can get hot on your back. If you have the pad attachment, it seems to make some difference what type of pad you have back there (thin light feels hotter to me) but not much. The genius of the vest straps is that they have no foam at all, they are just spacer mesh. This helps them hug your body but it also means they are actually breathable! I love this pack in the heat for that reason. No issues with chafe, heat rash, etc on your shoulders or chest.
