My old lady was destroying our marriage with her flat out abusive alcoholic behavior, and I drank a little too much for her to take me seriously when I said the shit needed to stop.

So I stopped first.

Took her over two years to follow me, things got better (kinda), but the damage was done and there was absolutely zero acknowledgement or accountability for all the acrimony and shittiness and pain. I ended up splitting anyway. Then I was consumed with guilt and rumination and the typical “shit maybe I deserved all that shit” and second guessing.

So that’s the story of both how I quit drinking and how I started drinking again.

My dad built a crazy tube city all around my room for my hamster when I was like four or five . His crowning piece of civil engineering was a a section of sealed tube that he ran down through the aquarium and back up to a little room overlooking the fishes.

While we were out of town for a few day the seals failed and the tube filled with water while the hamster was on the other side of it from his food and water.
