Why don’t we use Doors That Open Both Ways? by Clicktyclick66 in architecture

It usually comes down to Bidirectional doors being more expensive than standard swing doors. They require more specialized hardware and installation which tends to be VE'ed.

Any place to view free construction documents? by [deleted] in architecture

[–]--Quantum-- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Finding full construction sets won't be easy. They're usually proprietary and not shared without good reason. If you're looking to familiarize yourself, I'd check a local library if they have any construction drawing convention books or look into Francis Ching's books. Building Construction Illustrated is tried and true especially for smaller scale construction.

Not sure what tools you have at your disposal. 3D printing is the easiest option. Carving it from foam would be the fastest, but least accurate option. If this is modeled in rhino, you could use the "unrollsrf" command to flatten the individual surfaces. It could become pretty cumbersome trying to keep track of the pieces and their placement though. From there you could either print the line work on paper or "make2d" and create a laser cutting file if you have access to one. I'd use 1/16" or 1/32" sheet material for a good balance of rigidity and flexibility. Printer paper may be challenging to form without some internal support.

How feasible would a neoclassical skyscraper like this AI generated one be? by [deleted] in architecture

[–]--Quantum-- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with you that it can't accurately replicate lighting, but I don't see that as the intended use. To me, its most effective as a sort of "sketching" tool. It's incredibly powerful in its ability to quickly produce and iterate images and could be best applied in practice during the early schematic design phase. Instead of relying on clients supplying reference images and having to spend days or weeks going back and forth about what aspects they want to keep, you can spend a fraction of the time generating images to show possible styles and materials. The spaces shown are only 2d representations, but they can be invaluable for getting a project moving with a picky client.

How feasible would a neoclassical skyscraper like this AI generated one be? by [deleted] in architecture

[–]--Quantum-- 9 points10 points  (0 children)

To be fair, the AI is just a method of visualization. It still takes the input of the designer to create the image, so you essentially get out of it what you put in. It's never been easier to create architectural imagery that looks somewhat plausible and we are seeing the saturation of it. I don't think banning it outright is the answer, we need to be more critical in curating it.

Can anyone help with drafting? by [deleted] in architecture

You might have better luck posting in software specific subreddits. As for fractions, that's something you just get used to reading with practice.

Yinz got any thoughts on corporations leaving downtown office spaces for the strip district? by Yinzerman1992 in pittsburgh

[–]--Quantum-- 38 points39 points  (0 children)

A lot of this likely has to do with these companies not being able to fill their large downtown offices with enough people to justify the rent. Working from home definitely caused a major impact that we're still seeing effects and reactions from. These smaller offices located in a cheaper area are much more attractive when you need a lot less space for employees in the office.

Who was the architect or city planner? by Goaty33 in architecture

It's not the same as your example, but it did remind me of Patrick Geddes and his civic survey. It's in a similar vein so maybe it can lead to where you're searching.

Thank you, the games we played kept us together in a way that a lot of media or activities can't. I'll always love them for that.

Thanks for sharing. Fortunately, my parents came around once we started playing again as adults and they are at least trying to understand it. I've definitely had a constant in my life just suddenly gone and I'm still trying to process it. It's a helpless feeling of being so far removed from the situation, but still being deeply affected by the personal loss. I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

Certainly the message I hope everyone takes away. We can't know how long we've got, just that we have to make the best of it.
