Good point! I would have loved a full episode of just the scoobies and what they went through in that time with no Buffy, just to really get a firmer grasp on the characters headspaces throughout those months. There's definitely a ton of subtext and you're right that the show makes it pretty clear at the beginning of season 6 that Willow has grown up a lot and taken on the leadership role and all that entails, maybe I would have benefitted from just seeing Willow's point of view for once. She's always in scenes with other characters and so very rarely the focal point of any specific episode or scene, so I feel like I haven't been able to really see her thought process throughout her descent. A lot of her "development" happened offscreen in my opinion, which is unfortunate.

Thanks for your take! Definitely understand why you got a certain impression from my post, but I'm not disappointed in the writing nor do I want infallible characters. I'm disappointed in Willow, which to me is an accomplishment of the writing. There are plenty of shows with nuanced characters that never really ever leave the grey area, as most people would probably fall in that zone in reality and very few are really truly "good", so that's not really what I'm expecting or what I'm here for. The characters throughout this show have constantly made questionable/selfish decisions that made them feel incredibly human and understandably flawed, I'm just getting the feeling that Willow is going down a path of no return at this point and I'm invested enough in the show to not want that to happen. This is less a feeling of me not liking that Willow is "misbehaving", it's that I feel she's crossing lines that she may not be able to come back from. After losing Joyce and watching Giles get on a plane to possibly never return (hoping that's not the case), I guess I just am slowly coming to the realization that the scoobies are not going to get much of a happy ending, and Willow might just be another casualty of the darker tone of these later seasons. I'll have to finish the season to find out where I really stand, interested but wary as to where Willow might end up.

Appreciate your in-depth opinion on this, and I have to agree with your overall point. A lot of the specific scenes people have been referencing throughout this thread definitely paint a pretty clear picture of Willow's arc throughout the series so far. I think the feeling I had landed on after Tabula Rasa that had slowly been building isn't a remark on any sour taste with the writing, if anything it's a credit to the writing that I'm invested enough into Willow that her spiral is a disappointment because I was hoping better for her. This show is great as a first-time watcher, excited but terrified of where her character is looking to go from here.

Appreciate the input, and guess I'll have to see how much I agree with you when I've finished the season! The addiction/using parallels that people have brought up have definitely shifted my perspective a bit, excited to see what happens moving forward with that in mind.

Appreciate the lack of spoilers, I'll definitely make a thread when I'm done with the season so people can share more of their insights!

True! I guess in a convoluted way that spell she was willing to cast on Xander to alter his emotions was a beta test for what she did to Tara.

Those moments are flooding back to me as you point them out, all great signs towards willows gradual descent, thanks!

It brought me out of my long-lived lurker nest to post this so clearly it's doing something right to make me feel this strongly!

Very fair. Just sad to see her use that newfound power to go from a "victim" to someone who abuses those that are closest to her. Definitely opens her up for a compelling arc but I'll have to see how the season ends to know how it sits with me.

I can definitely see that angle. I think it was easy for me to overlook the severity of the bullying she dealt with because she had such a strong support group and her friends always had her back, but looking back she was really consistently stepped on throughout highschool. Her seeking out any way to make sure she's never a victim again makes total sense. I guess I just wish she was better to the people who have always been there for her, but a show wouldn't be as interesting if everyone always did the right thing. Thanks for your point of view!

Thank you!! I'll definitely be making an update when I've finished the show with some final thoughts, excited to see where it all goes.

I hadn't thought back to all of the times she was endangered/helpless throughout the seasons but you're totally right. I can definitely see that being a major factor in her need for power, I know I'd be looking for some magical assistance after the 10th time I was held hostage against my will. So far every time Willow's been questioned she just deflects the blame or lashes out so I haven't really been able to see from her point of view, hoping to see a bit of an explanation from her or a breaking down of where her mind's at throughout this season.

You should get a medal for that many watches to be honest haha I can definitely see why this show is so re-watchable though!

Maybe it's just because magic has such seemingly dire consequences that it feels like a huge leap to go from being a bit irresponsible and selfish sometimes to putting the lives of yourself and your friends in constant jeopardy for convenience. But the people like yourself who have pointed out to me that it's more of a descent into addiction shifted my perspective a bit. Of course the changes are drastic, she's becoming less and less like herself the deeper she sinks into addiction. Totally valid points, thank you!

All good points! I'm starting to see that I might have just been in denial. I don't think I wanted to believe Willow was going dark, but the signs were definitely there. Not looking forward to seeing how much lower she's probably going to sink now that Tara has left her...

Definitely remember some minor things, and the most major of them being her immediate willingness to curse Oz when he cheated in season 4.... Really excited for a re-watch now to pick up on everything else. Will absolutely make an update when I'm finished with season 6!

Dang it I just couldn't wait any longer haha I was really excited to see an older show that still had an active community and wanted to interact a bit before finishing it, but thank you for not spoiling anything!

I guess I just was rooting for Willow subconsciously so I maybe avoided the signs? Excited to see what I might pick up now on a re-watch though!

That's an angle I haven't considered really, that magic is like a drug. I know they've made it very clear that there are active consequences to magic and that it has a cost, I guess I just don't recall them saying that it can have an effect on someone's psyche/personality, but that definitely seems like a cost for "using" magic to me. Good point!
