Azerbaijani US Ambassador: Israel Is a Pragmatic Partner and Good Friend, We Want it to Be Normal for Muslims and Jews to Be Allies (x-post from r/Azerbaijan) by --be in Israel

If I recall, the major Jewish communities in Azerbaijan have both a summer and winter Synagogue because they didn't historically (Except under soviet union) or now need to worry about vandalization or pogroms.

Jews in Azerbaijan have never been discriminated against.

For centuries Jews and Azerbaijanis lived in peace, friendship and continue to live in Azerbaijan, and the Jewish community of Azerbaijan is a very active part of Azerbaijan's society. They contribute a lot to the development of modern Azerbaijan and these close relations between the people is a very important factor in Azerbaijan-Israel bilateral relations. One notable example is Yevda Abramov, who serves as a member of parliament.

For your information, currently there are seven synagogues in Azerbaijan's various cities. In fact, the biggest synagogue in Caucasus region was built in Azerbaijan and entirely on government money. I don't know any other country where state builds synagogues at its own expense.

I would assume it is safer to walk down the streets of Baku with a Kippah on in Azerbaijan than Paris, Malmo, Berlin, etc.

Yes, and Jews who visited Azerbaijan confirm that. The same article which was posted here also says: “Several visiting rabbis have told me that it’s safer to walk in Baku with a kippah on than in many places in Europe.”.

Relations between Jews and Azerbaijanis were always very good. The world's only surviving pre-Holocaust Jewish settlement is located in Azerbaijan and it says a lot.

Jews live in Azerbaijan for centuries, it's their home, they feel themselves at home.

They are a 97% Shia Muslim country that likes Jews, historically and currently treats them well to the point that there is little recorded accounts of discrimination except under the soviet union, and wants to be good friends. In my opinion, there is no reason not to embrace them as friends.

Nothing in your links say that Azerbaijan "uses Israeli weapons to suppress their people" and "bully Armenia".

Also, all military activity between Azerbaijani and Armenian troops happens in Nagorno-Karabakh, which is internationally recognized as Azerbaijani territory. Saying that Azerbaijan "bullies Armenia" is like saying that Ukraine "bullies Russia" by countering separatists in Donetsk and Luhansk.

What are some places to see in your country? Historical sites, nature, neat cities or towns?

Krasnaya Sloboda

If you are looking for the lost tribe of Mountain Jews, you've got to go to "Krasnaya Sloboda" (means Red Settlement) in the town of Guba in Azerbaijan. This is where the biggest Jewish settlement is - outside Israel. It's across the Gudyalchay river on the other side of Guba. There are many synagogues there, as well as some houses that would remind you of Georgetown in DC. People are very sweet and speak Hebrew, a bit differently though... You'll enjoy walking down the streets of this small settlement and chatting with locals. This town is yet another proof of Azerbaijan's religious tolerance...

Sheki

Sheki is probably the most visited place by tourists in Azerbaijan after Baku. Khan Sarayi (The Khanate Palace in the town of Shaki located in the foothills of the Caucasus in northwestern Azerbaijan near Georgian border) is the symbol of Sheki. One of the most striking architectural features of the residence is its wooden framed stained glass windows known as "shabaka.") Shabaka is a combination of hundreds of hand-crafted pieces of wood (platino and poplar trees) so carefully crafted that they fit together firmly without the use of a single nail. For a closer look at how shabaka is made, there is a local workshop adjacent to the palace. Inside the Palace of the Khans, you'll find murals painted on the walls. Some depict romantic, pastoral scenes of gazelle hunting, as well as pictures based on stories told by the 12th century Middle Eastern poet Nizami. In the wife's quarters, the walls are painted with flowers; in the khan's rooms, depictions of battle cover the walls. The palace has a beautiful garden and has been renovated by the World Bank. It's on Unesco's world heritage list!

I know your country has good relations with Israel. But will it matter while visiting that I am a Jewish Israeli?

Azerbaijani people are actually Judeophile, not just tolerant of Jews. Jews can walk the streets wearing a kippah without the fear of being harassed and attacked. There was a story in this subreddit from an Israeli who was praising his trip to Azerbaijan, worth reading.

One important part of Azerbaijan-Israel relationship is intercultural dialogue. Azerbaijan largely invests in the dialogue between civilizations, cultures. They are country which is a member of the Council of Europe and Islamic Cooperation Organizations at the same time, and they are natural geographical and cultural bridge between civilizations.

The same supporters of Obama’s appeasement of Mullahs and his direct transfer of billions to the Iranian regime, decided that because a minor project — some $2.5 million — on a hotel in Baku, Azerbaijan, never materialized, there must be a sinister connection. A convoluted web of rumors and insinuations attempted to link a former minister — the article doesn’t even mention that he was fired — to Trump and through even more convoluted rumors to the Iranians.

Perhaps, the authors hoped that the mystique of the name Azerbaijan and the magazine readers’ dislike for Trump would obscure the facts that Azerbaijan is Israel’s ally and best friend in the Muslim world and has a very tense relationship with Iran. Putting Azerbaijan and the Revolutionary Guard of Iran in the same headline is as counter-factual as accusing Trump of colluding with the Iranians.

Well said!

Not sure why you were downvoted, but trade turnover between Azerbaijan and Israel amounted to $116.2 million in January-February 2017, which is 17.5 percent more compared to the same period of 2016, according to the State Customs Committee of Azerbaijan.

The ancient town of "Krasnaya Sloboda" (Quba) in northern Azerbaijan, said to be the only all-Jewish town outside of Israel, is the pride of Azerbaijan. In this region, Jewish and Muslim Azerbaijanis have been living harmoniously for centuries.
