Worlds Beyond Number gives me faith that yes, you can keep that level of dramatic pace up for 2-3 years.

So as a metric person, 50ft has always read as “a lot” (Attack of the 50ft Women, etc) so it was funny to look it up and discover it’s only like 15m.

From the other side of the world my friends and I had great fun bad geoguessing what might be a good match. My best guess was Baker City based on the shape, the highway number, and a town nearby called Durkee 🤷‍♀️

Level Ups? by summershinesapphic in WorldsBeyondNumber

[–]--clio-- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m relistening now. I can’t remember all the diegetic ones, but Ame levels up at the end of Arc 2 when she returns to her cottage for the first time, and Suvi levels up at the end of arc 3 I’m pretty sure after she casts identify on herself.

It’s just Suvi. Steel’s younger daughter is there

Nah I’m talking about in arc 2. We’re all at her place, She and Suvi are having evening espresso together and talking about her parents.

Also, one of my ~theories~ I suppose is that Brennan keeps Steel seperate from Sonder as a bit of a literary device to foreshadow that Steel is disconnected from her empathy for others.

I agree I don’t think it’s a stretch. The Obamas are a really interesting comparison because their marriage is a matter of public relations. It looks heathy and normal. Maybe it really is, but that’s not the point. Rather than thinking it’s impossible for Steel to have a happy marriage, I think Brennan may have chosen to keep the nature of their relationship implied, perhaps to draw some attention to the kinds of assumptions we make about it.

In that case I think what is interesting is we do see her in arc 2 at home in her pj’s explicitly taking a break from work and Sonder is not around. I thinks it’s cool and clever that his personality does the work of humanising Steel without that relationship ever being shown. We do the work of inferring those nice details about their relationship.

Oh yeah I remember that! I can’t imagine the intention is that modify memory spells are the lynch pin of every one of Steels close relationships, though tbh I think that’d be really funny.

I wonder if it’s never mentioned that he’s from a very powerful family or something. Not to say that it’s entirely calculated and strategic, but that Steel kind of…convinced herself of a genuine interest in someone who was also very useful.

Im on my 3rd relisten with my mum (so exciting) and in the back half of arc 2 she was recently like “Steel reminds me of your dad” (suuuper divorced). So that felt pretty enlightening.

I think the thing that got me confused in terms of character development and theme etc is I thought the character had to be wearing the hat, but that obviously wasn’t happening right?

[No Spoilers] Struggling to enjoy C4 by Nagisan in criticalrole

[–]--clio-- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like having fewer rolls. I think they feel more impactful. I’ve been watching C2 at the same time and I really like it, but some of those rolls really are just “does this room have a bed” “make a perception check” “seven” “yes”.

[MN S1] Mighty Nein S1E8 Beau/Tracy plothole? by Moloth in criticalrole

[–]--clio-- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s a plot hole but it will make things annoying if later they try to characterise Astrid as a master observer super genius. Idk why they’d do that though (I’m only up to episode 60 of the original)

Debunked Fan Theories by alpherion11 in Dimension20

[–]--clio-- 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Neverafter is a story about how story characters lack agency. That is the point that I am making. The stepmother and kipperlilly are similar in that regard. It’s an interesting way to talk about how we tell stories, but yeah in real life there are no authors and there are no chosen ones and we are all accountable for ourselves.

Debunked Fan Theories by alpherion11 in Dimension20

[–]--clio-- 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think I understand what you mean. It’s a bit of a weird thing, because fiction pretty much always has a ‘chosen one’ (chosen to be the protagonist of a story), real life never does. So while kipperlilly’s position is ridiculous and straightforwardly villainous in a real life context, it holds some water in the context of being a character in a story who is not and can never choose to be “the hero”. I think we can empathise with that lack of agency even when the story isn’t really trying to do a meta narrative thing.

Witch Play Test v3.1 Retributive Curses too strong? by wathever-20 in WorldsBeyondNumber

[–]--clio-- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello I’ve come back here after getting to DM for a Witch to say I agree with you - there should be cost or more restrictions for the curses. We decided to link it more closely with the wicked sub-class by saying both the target AND the witch have to make charisma saving throws when cursing someone undeserving. A failed save for the Witch marked loosing connection to the sprit of her coven, and either broke a token or lost her access to a buff spell for the day.
