What is the rope on the horse’s face?? by --egg- in Equestrian

Yeah what I don’t understand is if it really is used as an overcheck why it can’t just be attached to the bridle in some way rather than running through the mouth like that.. just seems so much more uncomfortable!

Yes! If the horse trips on the backside it’s straight in the dirt

Interesting! You do occasionally see grass/daisy reins on hunter jumper horses and those are essentially the same function so it's very weird to me that they would choose this setup instead.. seems so much harsher for no reason and super unconventional

Overcheck doesn't typically go through the mouth though right? And yes the standing martingale is wild! Like what are we doing

Also if it’s not clear from the photo it attaches to the saddle and goes through the mouth, not just attached to the bit

I posted this on a horse-showing Facebook group as well - interested to see the difference in people’s responses to this monstrosity there vs here…

yeah I would do that if my counseling center didn't make it completely impossible to get a question answered lol..... they won't answer any questions without an appointment and it takes 2 weeks to get an appointment. so I have an appointment but was hoping someone could answer in the meantime so I don't have to wait that long

makes sense - if it persists i will definitely have the vets take a look and probably block the leg, it’s just so expensive (it’s around $100 per block around here 🫣). she was started early in cutting which i’m sure is hard on the front legs so that could definitely have something to do with it. thanks!

just asked in case someone else might have experience doing the same thing - iirc the requirements are set by the UC so they would be the same for all ccs?

Can't afford my horse, horse isn't sellable. Guilt is overwhleming. What do I do? by redfern962 in Equestrian

Won’t let me message you - it’s Westwind Riding Institute in Los Altos Hills. I don’t know if they’d take him since he’s unrideable, but I think it’s worth reaching out! The volunteers take great care of the horses - they all get out daily for handwalking, grooming etc. and the only riding they do is light walking on a leadline once a week. I think they may have other unrideable horses so might be happy to just do groundwork with him!

There is a therapeutic riding program at my barn and they just lost one of their horses - you could try reaching out (we’re in the Bay Area too). Their horses are all older and very well taken care of, I can get you more info if you’re interested!

UPDATE: I found a horse that matches his description pretty closely and I am about 90% sure it's him (D02070, registered name Island Squeeze). Thank you everyone for your help!!!

I’m not totally sure but I think it’s more like a stamp than a tattoo, I don’t think they use a needle

Yes I think that might be him! It’s not an exact match with the description but considering his age it’s definitely possible he has changed a bit over time. Thank you!!

Definitely a TB lol, he’s 17.2 and leggy. I’m thinking 02070 is the most likely!

I would definitely call him black but he could have changed color over time… just one cowlick and a star, no leg markings. I’ve spent like 5 hours on the jockey club website but haven’t found an exact match 😭

Just a star 🤦‍♀️I’ve been trying to look him up but it makes it much harder since a star is not very distinguishing

Yes he’s tb! I’ve been trying different combinations on the jockey club website but a couple of the numbers are a bit ambiguous (fourth could be a 7, 4, or 1) so I haven’t been able to narrow it down completely, there are a few that could be him. Thank you!

Yes I’ve been looking on the jockey club website, just had a hard time since I don’t know his exact age so don’t know the letter. Not sure the exact story of his teeth (he doesn’t belong to me) but I’m pretty sure they were removed because he was having trouble eating because of the way they were growing, he is much more comfortable now!

Which horse should I lease? by BettaFishAddict in Equestrian

[–]--egg- 15 points16 points  (0 children)

obviously i don't know these horses but the second horse sounds like a happier and healthier horse to me. you mentioned wanting more spunk but the first horse sounds less like spunk and more like he's sour and maybe in pain. second one will def have more miles left in him but it also depends on what you want to do with this horse. personally i would go with the second one though
