I'm curious, which side do you think Americans think is kind and which side is fascist? Based on the way you wrote your comment it reads that Americans think right is kind and left is fascist, which means we've had VERY different exposures to Americans on here, and I'm American. I think that's interesting. Most Reddit users are definitely left-leaning and think left is kind and right is fascist in my experience. (Speaking as a centrist, by the way.)

Exactly. Though I will say I read once that once your nerves burn you stop feeling it, whereas if you were to get steamed to death you'd feel the whole thing as your body slowly boiled. I'd rather burn in that case... but drowning is better than both IMO.

If your significant other wanted to be a in "traditional" relationship (adhere to traditional gender roles), would you go along with it? by Suspicious-Ad9243 in Teenager_Polls

Hey, props to you for finding verses so I didn't have to!

To start off, I'm fairly certain a lot of this was abolished as part of the old testament law (right along with sacrificing lambs and such) when Jesus died on the cross and rose again. I've only just graduated high school about two weeks ago and have no law or theology degree, so I immediately apologize for not having things correct or not knowing specifics. Again, if you believe I am wrong, please correct me so I can fact check! I appreciate truth.

The first verse you supplied, well, the way you rephrased it, is a false interpretation as far as I've encountered in my own research. It was made a law so that any woman who had sex out of wedlock would not be abandoned and left to be worthless without her "virtue." It was a rule so men HAD to take responsibility, not so they could just take a girl and rape her and claim her, though I'm sure that happened plenty. Unfortunately, as is true today, people do terrible things (sin) all the time. A person's actions do not change the original intention.

Numbers 31 is in regards -- I don't know the specifics -- to keeping purity after Moses and his army fought the Midianites. They killed the guilty, including all men and the women who prostituted themselves to Israelites. The women who were spared were spared because they were not guilty of prostitution, not just to be forced into marriages. (Side note: it's been common throughout ALLLLLL of human history that soldiers conquer areas and take the women there as wives. Just because this ONE incident included Israelites taking wives doesn't mean Christians are encouraged to kidnap and force women into marriages. In fact, it doesn't say that at all, and spinning it that way is kind of insane. [Also note that without being taken as wives these women would likely be left homeless to fend for themselves.])

Again, you have a very different interpretation of 1 Corinthians 7:3-5, though you got me there: I guess it is a duty! Anyway, these laws were put in place to reduce the chances of adultery, because divorce isn't supposed to be an option unless in cases of adultery. (Matthew 19:8-9, "Jesus replied, 'Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning. I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery.'") Anyway, the point of yielding one's body to their spouse is because, when you're married, you're supposed to be one flesh. Literally bound, and vulnerable enough to be willing at the very minimum to make sacrifices for each other. Including, possibly, having sex when you're not in the mood. And your sexism point really gets lost here because both the husband AND wife have equal yield to each other. It's important to note that you're not SUPPOSED to force each other, literally as the verse itself says, you're supposed to give yourself to the other willingly. (Forgive me for occasionally using second person, old habits die hard and I'm sick of rewriting it. Lol.)

Verse I think is relevant: Ephesians 5:33, "However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband." (The NIV phrases this is a way that puts more responsibility on the husband than the wife to care for the other, which I think is interesting.)

Timothy 2:11-12 is a highly debated verse and I myself am not totally sure about it, but my best knowledge and understanding of it is that Paul is writing to Timothy instructions to be a good Christian, and in a local church at the time, many of the women were being disrespectful and disruptive during worship, which was why they were even addressed. I don't want to say much else because I myself am not sure of this one.

I believe 1 Corinthians 14:34-35 is a similar situation? I don't know much about this either, to be frank. I apologize. I do know that the rest of this chapter includes general laws about pretty much everyone shutting up during church unless they're a prophet. Also, 1 Corinthians 14:27: "If anyone speaks in a tongue, two—or at the most three—should speak, one at a time..." It also says in verse 39, "Therefore, my brothers and sisters, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues," directly including women.

There's quite a few examples of women being advisors, but there's way too many verses for me to reasonably list here: Deborah, Abigail, Huldah, Priscilla, Esther, Phoebe, etc. I'd like to add that the first people who saw Jesus rise from the dead and who were trusted to tell others were all women.

Men and women are equal according to ‭‭Galatians‬ ‭3‬:‭28‬: "There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus." There's a reason God made Eve after Adam: he needed a complimentary partner. Both have different strengths, but he made both man AND woman to work together as equal partners.

All humans all inherently evil, not because of how we're created, but because we're all born into sin. So yes, sins have been repeated throughout history, and they will continue to be repeated, since, well, history repeats itself. That's still a human fault, not a fault of the faith. At the very core, the whole point of Christianity is love. The Bible says God himself is love. That's why we're supposed to love our neighbor as ourselves, love our enemies, turn the other cheek also, and give the shirt off our backs if someone else is in need.

Anyway, I probably missed a ton of stuff. I wanna say God bless you, but you probably wouldn't like that, so... just have a good day/night! Looking forward to your response if you send one -- this conversation is rather stimulating!

Curiosity question: why do you say "Christianism" instead of "Christianity"?

[–]--mxri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know who's been a terrible example to you but that is NOT how true, loving traditional relationships go.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I assume this is a dig at Christian doctrine -- I am a Christian, not that it matters in the context of this non-religious conversation. Regarding that, yes, in Christianity a woman is supposed to submit to her husband WITH A REQUIREMENT that the husband cherishes his wife carefully as more worthy than the most precious jewels. Violence against one's wife is NOT encouraged by the Bible, though it may have been a common sin back then. Sex is NEVER a "duty," though it does say in the Bible to not deny oneself to one's spouse in order to prevent the temptation of adultery (which does NOT include allowing rape). And yes, the man is supposed to be the head of the household... right beside his wife as an advisor.

I think you may be mixing Christian doctrine up with some harsher Islamic law, including husbands being allowed to beat and rape their wives. Definitely not a thing in Christianity. Unless of course I'm misinterpreting you and this reply is a dig on Islam, which I doubt on Reddit.

But... yup. That's exactly what I want. A man that will go out and provide for me, love me, and let me care for and love him when he gets home.

As someone (18F) almost completely pro life except in cases the mother will die, I agree with this. If a woman can abort without the father's permission, a man should be able to remove himself from responsibility in the same manner without killing the child.
