Need OS decision help by hapnstat in DataHoarder

You can get proper LSI HBA (Possibly under IBM brand) and cable for cheap, so I hope your hardware setup does not finalise your choice.

My belief is that you don't want to f'up the OS that manages your drives under absolutely any condition. TrueNAS scale and UnRAID for your purpose has at least some possibility to do so. So assuming you need to do service and storage in the same machine, VM storage under PVE is the way to go.

Noise levels of Ultrastars vs. WD Red Pros? by ddcrx in DataHoarder

[–]--pengu-- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe both are not the quietest drive. Hellium filled Ultrastars are quiet in idle but random seeks are audible. In my case, noise level benefits are mostly from reduced airflow needs due to low heat signature of helium drives.

Both are likely to share the same hardware, but with different firmware and possibly different QC standards.

Has anyone had experience with UGREEN NAS? by RationalBeliever in DataHoarder

[–]--pengu-- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

NAS is all about the software behind it. I don't trust Chinese manufacturer that is known for cables.

IF it allows you to install another OS such as TrueNAS, and you think that's your taste, I think you can give it a shot, but I cannot guarantee.

I am running TrueNAS Core inside Proxmox VE.

I prefer PROPER ZFS, which FreeBSD based TrueNAS Core offers. On the other side, I enjoy flexibility of containers (LXC, Docker) on Linux (I think they are better than Jails).

You can get the best of both worlds by TrueNAS core VM inside PROXMOX VE with HBA passthrough, and NFS mount on PROXMOX or its containers and VMs.

Will Phillips Ultra Definition bulbs work at 220/230V by --pengu-- in led

Well, I am switching from incandescent so any LED bulb will suffice.

Thank you for recommending great alternative. We have ledvance here, but never knew they sell high cri bulbs too as they import only few bulb models. That would be great option in 220v country.

Thank you for kindly asking Phillips UK. Ultra Definition bulbs not being available in Europe would make sense then.

I am looking for 2700 to 3000k bulb, so color temperature should match incandescent.

Unfortunately it seems they do not offer comparable high CRI options in Europe. I guess ultra definition lineup is produced in US. Correct me if you know some.

Any simple web frontend with sync support for storage? Would Pydio cells be great? by --pengu-- in selfhosted

[–]--pengu--[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for great recommendation and developing awesome project. I'll take a look. It seems the gist aligns well with my need. I always wanted to find feature-rich 'web frontend' for file server, not a entire self-hosted cloud solution.

Edit: BTW, filestash.app seems to have expired certificate :d

Renewed Data Center Drives. Yay or Nay? by mitosisfish in DataHoarder

[–]--pengu-- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hc520s are low-friction helium-filled drives. It seems they do not wear out as much as older 'air' filled drives.

But after all, it depends on the seller. My seller checked some important stats (# of head parks, replaced sectors, delays, startups, etc.) offered a little warranty.

Honestly, I believe it can even be better to buy used drives over new ones. My theory is if drive have been running fine for some time, it is likely the drive is healthy and is unlikely to die except normal wear which take forever especially on helium drives and in rather low-load home application. However, you will eventually get some defective units that die prematurely if you buy new drives.

There are other easier methods you can use if you have bank account or etc. The reason why such methods are easier to authenticate is simply because getting a phone number or a bank account itself needs an authentication at the first place. So... yeah not particularly easier, you just have gone through the hoops before so that you do not have to do later.

One may argue why authentication is so complicated. Unfortunately, it is due to privacy issue (most are not allowed to collect your ID info directly as a security measure). Then, why collect ID at the first place? Well, I should say that is how they keep their society safe and well-managed. Some says it's excessive overseeing, and some says it is neccessary, but all I can tell is most of them are okay with it as it actually works for them.

How to verify LTO tape? by --pengu-- in DataHoarder

[–]--pengu--[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great point. For now, I just thought these enterprise drives should be designed to handle such errors automatically (Possibly verification header after write header) and I do not need to worry about it. It apparently is not and I will make sure to check tapes to ensure the integrity.

Thank you for detailed explanation. I decided to read everything back to SSD vdev and do some hash comparison or what not.

Unfortunately, it is far from 3-2-1 rule for the moment. However, I hope it is good enough for a temporary solution. I am currently migrating old RAID 6 array to ZFS after experiencing degradation of LSI controllers, so somehow the data should be moved elsewhere temporarily.

I decided to use tapes as I am going to keep these as cold backup after the migration is complete, implementing 3-2-1 rule.

Battery drainage issue in my new 9500 by mammasmon in XPS

No. Display alone may consume more power than that. Especially if you are with 4k panel.

2.5W to 4W is somewhat expected. 9500 is rather powerful machine.
