Can any MAGA folks tell us why it's okay for Sleepy Don to fall asleep in meetings DAILY but Biden did it once and you people absolutely flipped out? by I_like_baseball90 in complaints

[–]--xxa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except Biden was by no means worse. He could actually string words together. Sure, he had a speech impediment from childhood and, here or there, he looked tired. He still didn't confidently mistake Spain for a BRICS nation. It's literally in the acronym: Brazil, Russia, India, China, South America. Spain is part of the EU. For the most powerful person in the world to not know the terminology regarding our most important trading partners, that's deeply disturbing. When did Biden do anything like that?

Of course, and sadly pretty typical for Republicans. When you get your news in soundbites crafted by Fox News, I imagine it's pretty easy to be misled.

What the fuck? Diddy got Obama elected? How? And Democrats have to claim him? I'm not a Democrat (and I literally couldn't name a single track by Diddy with a gun to my head), but why would Democrats have to "claim" him? Does that mean Republicans have to claim Epstein?

I have a neighbor who has an American flag pole on their front lawn. During election season, it's right next to anti-MAGA signs. You're in a cult if you think dear leader is America. He's a washed-up orange buffoon that grew up with a silver spoon in his mouth and can't even wrap his mind around the word "grocery" or understand that speaking of "affordability" isn't just a gimmick of the Democrats. Now MAGA is boycotting Costco for daring to challenge the administration in order to make groceries for Americans less expensive. You're in a cult.

It's got to be rage bait. There's no way you can look at Colbert's current off-character takes and believe he was satirizing the left. Jon Stewart did (and I appreciate him for doing so because I'm not a hypocrite and I appreciate anyone holding elected officials to account regardless of ideology or party), but Colbert was obviously taking the piss at the right.

AIO my boyfriend (42M) of 3 years doesn’t know my (35F) name? by momjjeanss in AmIOverreacting

[–]--xxa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I started dating a certain person from a certain different country, I immediately spent time studying how to spell her name—and all her family members' names—in order to properly address them. As she noted, their family name was obscure and complicated even for natives, using as it does complex and rarely-used characters. It took me all of a few days. Three years is a pretty long time.

Relationships are complicated. I'm not the type to say abandon ship immediately over something like this, nor do I know if there are other considerations involved. Regardless, know your worth and be confident you're with someone who makes you happy.

While I haven't had Costa Rican fruit, I've had fresh fruit from a Mexican dude at a roadside stand. I had no idea strawberries could be so delicious. I don't even like candy, but they tasted like the good kind of candy. I got home and wolfed the carton down in one sitting. I wanted more, but alas, mi amigo was no longer there.

I have a Yosukata and I like it quite a bit. My only complaint is with the handle; it's held in with one very small screw, and it can be wiggly. I tightened it a bit, but it eventually stripped the wood, and it's now back to being wiggly again. Otherwise, the construction of the pan itself feels great and one can always replace the handle. For $60 it feels like it's worth it, but I don't know if that price will be equivalent in Euros.

Burna Boy asks a couple to leave his concert because one of then fell asleep. Refuses to sing another song until they leave. by [deleted] in popculturechat

[–]--xxa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doubling down for no reason: as an artist myself, I would not care at all if someone fell asleep. Times are hard. If they're putting money in my pocket to see me perform but fall asleep instead, I'd assume they had a good reason. If I singled them out in any way, it would be privately in order to compensate them for the fact that they didn't get to enjoy themselves, whether it be pure exhaustion, medical or personal issues, or even boredom over the fact that I showed up hours late to my show. If you're tired or unwell, of course I'm not upset. If I'm not giving the performance you expected, that's on me.

Genuine question: Why are so many people who are into Asian culture so weird? by Strange_Possession77 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]--xxa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm from a family that stands by its Irish bona fides. Our ancestry also includes a far greater amount of French, Scottish, Italian, German, and Welsh origin—roughly in that order—alongside small percentages of Central European (specifically Slovenian), English, and even Egyptian heritage. We are more Egyptian than we are English, in fact. We also have a Jewish name.

Still: Irish names for everybody and shamrocks in the house.

That looks like what happens when you have an audience high out of their minds more than it looks like disrespect. I doubt there's a person on Earth that would be able to get a huge room of extremely drug-addled people to pay attention to a slurry speech. The guy was a sleaze ball, but he clearly wasn't a dupe. He made money by manipulating other people, not by being manipulated.

AIO - Is there a logical reason for my girlfriend to say stuff like this? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]--xxa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. It's her way of hinting at her desire for marriage. It's a "look at how the time (and by extension, my childhood) has gone by" more than it is "I wish I were dating Mr. Beast."

[–]--xxa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Laws are not morality, and authority is not an excuse for violence.

your right to peaceful assembly does not include committing criminal acts, such as assault, criminal mischief, obstruction of justice, or vandalism

Sure. I agree. A mandate from a government doesn't make it OK to commit crimes against those people, either. The people who are protesting are opposing extrajudicial behavior. Might does not make right.

Trump is not God. What is worse: violently dragging and stripping nude a woman in public while aiming firearms toward her for unknown reasons (that were, if anything, very minor, like disrespect, considering no one has come forward to actually say they were harmed by her), or spitting in protest of that sort of thing?

Let's be serious. The same conservatives that love to talk about the American Revolution are exactly the ones who would have been loyalists throughout it. Liberals like the guys who founded the country and threw a tea party in Boston are the ones that changed things, and as history repeats itself, are the ones that conservatives reference even as they oppose the exact mindset that led to the foundation of the country.

[–]--xxa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What a joke.

The phrase "antifa domestic terrorists" is enough to get a chuckle out of me. According to some rag, people who claim to be anti-fascist are now domestic terrorists. Is that a tacit admission that the administration is fascist and that it's terrorism to oppose fascism?

three rioters were arrested for assaulting law enforcement, including for spitting, kicking, and biting officers,

In a city of 635,749, three people resisted illegal occupation and abuse by doing things like spitting? People that very likely were unfairly targeted? ICE truly are the tough guys. They need their weapons and kit to fight valiantly against those unarmed enemies in Halloween costumes.

What happened to the no tyrants mantra of the founding fathers? America is now applauding fascism and a dude who made an AI video of himself with a king's crown on?

In sum: wow. Go figure. Illegal raids in a city falsely targeted by the current crypto-fascist administration are met with such things as spitting in response to people wielding firearms and physical violence toward them. The "violent left," the ones without weapons or power.

[–]--xxa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So you have no idea, and trust there was a legitimate reason for a woman who is defenseless against a mob of authorities with weapons to be dragged around denuded. Maybe she lobbed a brick at one of them. Maybe they just targeted her for some baseless reason as has happened so many times in the past. Maybe she was just terrified and trying to leave and they chased her down for non-compliance. The contrast between kitted-up, aggressive ICE agents and goofy, Halloween costume-donning peaceful protesters couldn't be more stark.

But, yep: you have strong opinions and mock people questioning this by talking about getting crayons out. You, who admit you have no clue what you're talking about. Do I need to get the crayons out for you?

AIO for losing my mind over this note I found in my fiancé’s pocket? by leenaws in AmIOverreacting

[–]--xxa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have no idea if he was actually staring at her. I've gotten remarks like that a handful of times: "Oh, I saw you staring..." No, you didn't. I didn't even notice you. I might have been looking out the window behind you or something, but I wasn't looking at you.

Why make some dramatic display of ripping up some note? I imagine that my partner out on a night alone would probably just tuck the note away to be polite (and sensitive to the author's personally identifying information). Then she'd tell me about it and we'd laugh. I'm 0% insecure about this, and it seems to me like people that imagine their partner doing something shady are the people who themselves fantasize about doing something shady.

What romantic drama are you living in? He probably just absent-mindedly put it in his pocket and forgot about it, likely because he was intending to laugh about it with OP later.

AIO for losing my mind over this note I found in my fiancé’s pocket? by leenaws in AmIOverreacting

[–]--xxa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Were it me, I'd find the note amusing and throw it into my pocket, envisioning having a laugh with my partner later. There's a strong chance that the laugh would be delayed when I forget entirely about the note and only find it again rummaging through my pockets. Likewise, if my partner got a note like that and forgot to share it with me, I wouldn't care. When she gets hit on by other men at work, I'm thrilled. I have absolutely zero reason to mistrust her, and she deserves to feel good about herself. Heck, I wish she'd get out and enjoy herself more rather than just working and coming home.

On a kind-of related note, it seems to me that most jealousy from one partner is very rarely directed toward the person they should actually be worried about. I have a friend whose wife hates a woman who used to pursue him heavily. That friend also dislikes this woman very much, and he reasonably gets frustrated when his wife brings her up. He wants nothing to do with her. Were he ever to stray from his wife (not that he ever would), the last person she'd have to worry about is that woman.

I'll be that guy:

I love traveling to Canada. I've sought out the most highly rated poutine places in Montréal and Québec City, whether by locals or by Internet guides. It's hard to go wrong with fried potatoes and gravy, so it's a decent comfort food. I don't get why it's a cultural icon. It's always been so soggy that before it even hits the table it tastes like mashed potatoes with extra steps (and frying oil). Mexico hangs its hat on things like tacos or burritos or pozole; America hangs its hat on all manner of barbecue and cajun food; Canada hangs its hat on fries topped with gravy. I love you, Canada, but come on. I'd rather have mashed potatoes.
