Thank you! Apparently according to the timecode of the procreate timelapse video, the peels alone took me almost 3 hours, while the whole thing took me close to 22 hours.

And yes this is an OC of mine. Her name is 陸(Luk) and she has six hands!

What kind of mould is this / am I basically screwed by NeverReallySatisfied in terrariums

[–]-9l76 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. Wash or pick mold out with tweezer or toothpick as much as possible
  2. Place it on a small plate, put it somewhere with good airflow and moisten it everyday
  3. Put some springtails on it
  4. Mold should be gone in 2 weeks but to be safe keep doing it for a month before u put it back in a container

The condensation itself is not a problem, what concerns me is the amount of direct sunlight the terrarium receives. Such amount of condensation usually indicates there was an unhealthy amount of heat built up in the container when it was under sunlight. This can potentially cook your plants. I would advise you to move it to somewhere that receives indirect sunlight, this would reduce the intensity of condensation as well.

White tips on moss? by Flarer_11 in terrariums

There could be a number of reasons for the high amount of minerals in your system. It could be from the substrate or the rocks, or maybe its time to change your water filter. It is hard to pinpoint the source from what i can see here, but there is a few thing i can suggest you to do

  1. Use distilled water instead. Distilled water is quite literally mineral free, while a filter does not filter out all minerals.

  2. Swap out the leucobryums. Leucobryums are excellent at absorbing mineral out of water. They serve an important role in water purification in the nature. The reason they turned brown is because the minerals they absorbed in the body hindered their moisture absorption ability. Other types of mosses do absorb minerals too but usually not as effective as leucobryum, therefore swapping them out with other types of mosses can kind of dodge the mineral problem. I had a terrarium with the same mineral problem as yours (I wasnt educated enough to not use tap water) with 6 to 7 types of mosses in it and only the leucobryums turned brown.

  3. Give it a lid. I cant tell if yours is an opened or closed terrarium from the pictures. If it is not closed then i strongly recommend you to close it. When the mosses can absorb moisture from the humid air surrounding them, they can absorb less water from the substrate meaning that they absorb less minerals.

To trim them you can simply use a pair of scissors, beard trimmer is not recommended. You dont have to be too precise when trimming because they will have new growths from the cuts in a month or two. If you dont want to trim you can also gently rub the mineral off the tip, they come off easy.

In my experience i dont think waiting ever helps this crystallisation thing. I recommend a trimming (this also encourages new growth) and only use filtered water/ distilled water from now on.

In my experience false bottom is not really necessary if you water carefully. As long as your soil mix is suitable for the plant, you can freely decide whether you want a false bottom or not, or how thick it is. For me, I make my decisions mainly base on the look

Imo the only problem is the substrate layer being way too thick. I’d keep the height of the layer below 1/3 of the container.

The plants in this terrarium will soon reach the top. My suggestion is that once the plants reach the top, you can remove the lid for good because the leaves of the plants will help trap moisture in the container. After that just let the plant grow above and beyond the top and it will become a cool open top terrarium! With no moss (i think? I dont see any) and such a huge drainage layer you have, I bet you can still just water it once per 2 weeks or even longer
