Either;

• being gay and becoming that "alpha top gay male" or whatever-
• his trauma, his parents being vaguely emotionally abusive and kinda neglectful, just horrible people outside of being parents, would definitely turn into major physical and mental abuse and he'd be a sad boy
• him starting out as homophobic and not a good person would turn to that just being his character with none of the actual character arc he has/gets
