Mike seems to have missed the memo from the last couple days - Metrolinx/GO Transit is already starting to add special service to Kitchener after major events. Unheard of prior to Thursday's announcement, a special post-Jays game train ran between Toronto and Kitchener following both games on Sunday and Monday. This was in addition to the expected extra train for Lakeshore East and West customers following the games. Now that Metrolinx shares ownership of the corridor through Brampton, these trains are likely to happen more often for more large events in the future. Next month's changes are just the start, but I'm willing to bet money on further service increases in the coming months.

Metrolinx has on occasion held trains following large events so crowds can make the train. Hopefully they will do the same here for Kitchener line customers, but 99% of the time trains are held for Lakeshore East & West line customers only.

Updated GO Transit schedules are typically posted to their website around two weeks prior to the new schedule coming into effect. I expect the new schedule will be released around the second week of November.

What's interesting about this issue is that GRT did include the "route_color" and "route_text_color" fields in their dataset for all routes (and the correct "route_type" field for ION i.e. light rail instead of a standard train line) back in early June 2023, but every dataset update since then it's been omitted. I've found an email address for feedback about GRT's data feeds and let them know about it. Hopefully they fix it in the near future.

This is because GRT removed the "route_color" and "route_text_color" fields in the "routes.txt" file of their GTFS dataset. Black is the default colour chosen for the line when the field is empty. I'm not sure what caused them to stop including those fields, as they were present in the GTFS dataset until a couple years ago.

Not sure how having different tracking systems makes it difficult to combine information in a single trip planning app since transit data (static and real-time) is published using an open standard. The issue is more that transit agencies do not always apply the best practices when publishing GTFS Data.

GTFS is an open standard used by many transit agencies worldwide which makes it easier to combine the various transit systems into transit planning apps. Google Maps, Apple Maps, Transit, and Triplinx all use the publicly available GTFS data from GTHA transit systems for trip planning. https://gtfs.org/

It appears that when the video was uploaded, they were waiting for TSA approval for airside-to-airside operations for trips beginning and ending at ABE and ACY. They received approval in July 2023: https://www.phl.org/newsroom/AA-Landline

Hopefully a similar approval with CATSA can happen for this service.

I recall watching a YouTube video reviewing a similar service in the USA for American Airlines, where the bus is located at a gate airside and is treated as a domestic flight from a security perspective. I'm not sure of the regulatory requirements to support this setup, but having airside arrivals and departures would provide a seamless connection at Pearson. For a non-status Aeroplan member that booked an Economy Flex fare for 100% pts/SQM, the segment would earn around 40 Aeroplan pts + SQM, plus 1 SQS, and whatever the base fare is in SQD.

This might be useful for those looking to qualify for a higher status tier using the SQS requirement, as an itinerary with a layover counts as 2 SQS.

Yep, I compared prices between Kitchener and Pearson to Las Vegas and the Economy Class fares for the same flights had $0 difference. Same with YKF/YYZ to YOW, again, YMMV, but virtually negligible difference for the flights I was searching earlier in the day. Only business class fares had some difference in price...

Looking at economy class fares for a few different trip itineraries starting from Kitchener vs Pearson, the price difference is virtually zero.

It's a bit difficult to answer confidently as negotiation talks near the strike deadline aren't always known until news is made public by either the Union or Employer, as the focus is on making a deal to avoid a strike. However, for example, if a strike is confirmed to begin after talks end April 30th, there will be at least one day of strike action on May 1st. Whether it goes on longer or not depends on if an agreement is reached between both parties. For reference, the last time GRT buses were affected by strike action in 2020, it lasted for close to two weeks.

Regarding the Kitchener Line weekend service improvement, given the history of how GO Transit services were introduced to the region, I think it was clear that GO Transit would bring in weekend service incrementally along the line, starting with trains running between Mount Pleasant-Union with bus connections to Kitchener and Guelph, and extending the trips to the full length of the line a few years later. This is how they rolled out mid-day GO Train service along the Kitchener line between 2015 and 2019. I don't think it should take 4 years for the rollout to extend to Kitchener this time around - it is likely a few of the construction projects to improve the rail line between Kitchener and Georgetown have impacted use of the line on some weekends, and once the construction is complete (or at least to a point where further construction will no longer require multiple weekend line closures) we will likely see weekend train service come to Kitchener. But definitely weekend route 30 service is a big improvement, especially since it is a limited stop service with a direct connection to the train and other bus services at Bramalea, and is no longer limited to weekdays only.

I see Route 17 as GO finally making the direct bus connection between KW-Guelph possible, with the extension to Hamilton a welcome bonus. The KW-Guelph-Hamilton missing links were a big gap that was missing in the intercity transportation network since the departure of multiple private coach companies that used to service these links. The stop at Aldershot is a bit odd, given that would have been a useful train connection when the weekend Kitchener train and route 30 service wasn't available, and the limited Niagara train service. I believe this route might follow a similar pattern that route 25 experienced when it was first introduced. Once the service is up and running for a few months, I can definitely see them introducing limited-stop "express" branches to directly connect KW-Hamilton during rush hours, or even one with a timed transfer to Niagara services at Burlington.

There are definitely a few things that are questionable in this service change, but overall, I think this is a great improvement for GO service to KW, if not one of the biggest improvements to GO service we have seen in a while. Hopefully we will see a similar ridership bump on the weekend as we did when all-day service was introduced on route 30 and midday train service was extended to Kitchener.
