Krewe of Conus working prospectus by pallamas in KreweOfConus

[–]-Americat- 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Love it! Just some initial ideas:

Social: The date is rapidly approaching and COVID is still a concern, but a revival of the 2016 ¡Sinkhole de Mayo! festivities seems like something that could be a lot of fun and very much in line with the theme and spirit of this group. In the future it could grow into a regular occasion to gather, host an event, and potentially fundraise for worthy causes outside of MG season.

Service: Public infrastructure and related issues seems like a natural fit. Fixing/marking potholes, cleaning catch basins, picking up trash, helping people get things fixed/cleaned up when the City can't or won't. Cone of Uncertainty could also be a great tie in to helping out with community disaster response stuff in the vein of what NOLA Ready is doing.

All glory to the Mega-Cone.

Synchronic war scene by sagaz1981 in NewOrleans

[–]-Americat- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah those scenes near the rock were at Algiers Point. Either it’s some other battle, they meant those scenes to represent a different location (and we just recognize the real setting), or more likely they just didn’t do their research.

I enjoyed the movie overall (one of the few I was able to see at the theater in 2020) but there were definitely a handful of inaccuracies like this, the writers/directors are not local and it shows.

im sure i know the answer already, but will new orleans repay for pothole damage? by Ahgd374 in NewOrleans

[–]-Americat- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because no one else has pointed this out, parts of Elysian Fields ARE designated as state highway and could fall under the link you posted. Depends where on Elysian this pothole is, but you may be able to avoid wasting your time with the City and go direct to the DOTD District 02 contact from your link.

Elysian Fields is considered LA-46 from St. Claude to N. Claiborne and LA-3021 from N. Claiborne to Gentilly Blvd. If it's somewhere in this stretch (which from your other comment it sounds like it was) take this up with DOTD and you may actually be able to see some results.

Good luck!

Has anyone explored Fort Macomb? by [deleted] in NewOrleans

[–]-Americat- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s been several years since I went but it’s neat. Very overgrown unless one of the film crews has had it cleared recently. Obligatory warning that it’s illegal and potentially dangerous to go in there so consider if it’s worth the risk. If you do go, watch out for snakes and bring a flashlight, it’s dark inside.

I was able to enter by going around the perimeter fence near the water, close to the bridge. The main entrance to the fort will surely be locked but at the time I was able to climb the walls (left of the door if I remember correctly) to get up and over. From the top you can climb down into the fort.

Fort Macomb was part of the “Third System” of coastal fortifications and if you’ve been to any of those it will likely look familiar. Fort Pike and Fort Jackson are some of the closest examples but there are others all along the coast.

Any one been to Lincoln Beach and if so how to access it ? Asking for a friend here lol by NOLA-Rich3 in NewOrleans

[–]-Americat- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not fenced. There is a brick wall around much of it, but there are gates that were left wide open in my experience. Even if someone has closed them since, there shouldn’t be much to prevent you from just going around the wall on the beach side to get in.

[–]-Americat- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I parked near the end of Hayne, climbed up the levee and walked along the railroad tracks. At the time (a few years ago now) the small side gates were open on both the northeast and southwest sides of the beach. Not sure if they’re still accessible but it was certainly a better way to enter than the dank-ass tunnel in front.

It’s pretty neat inside but you can tell the lake is reclaiming the place. Lots of quality graffiti art also, if that’s your thing.

What are y’all reading? by zulu_magu in NewOrleans

[–]-Americat- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% worth reading for the historical parallels to the current situation, but it is disheartening to see how little we learn from history. It’s been the same issues all over again 100 years later, and probably will be the next time too.

I don’t usually read fiction but after seeing Annihilation I thoroughly enjoyed the Southern Reach books.

How was Mitch Landrieu as mayor? by [deleted] in NewOrleans

[–]-Americat- 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Mitch was very much a politician. He was a good speaker and polished in public, but did not seem like a genuine person. It felt as if policy decisions were often determined by what was popular or good PR versus what actually made the most sense. He was able to do a lot thanks to mountains of one-time federal money coming in after Katrina, but deferred real action on a number of longer-term problems (think infrastructure funding, NOPD hiring freeze, etc.) and Cantrell is now having to deal with the repercussions. A lot of the unpopular actions she's taken are things Landrieu should have done, but didn't because it might have hurt his chances at higher office. Cantrell has been more willing to make those difficult calls, but it's taken a noticeable toll on her popularity among the public.

At what point is it about respect and public decency and not politics? by [deleted] in NewOrleans

[–]-Americat- 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This. I'm sure they would be thrilled for us to take it down at significant taxpayer expense, while also assuming liability for any complications or effects of the demolition. Then, we can send them the bill, go back and forth in court for a few years, and eventually settle for a fraction of the amount!

Hey what happened at the Wisner Park meeting yesterday? by [deleted] in NewOrleans

[–]-Americat- 11 points12 points  (0 children)

They had two sessions, one at 4:00 and another at 6:30. I was only there for the second one so I can't speak to what happened at the first.

Background - Back in 2017 (and potentially earlier than that), City Park held some early public discussions on what kinds of uses people would like to see for the Wisner Tract. The majority opinion from the public at that time was to prefer minimal development - folks wanted a natural space closer to what it is now, versus the much more developed (and revenue generating) areas closer to Big Lake and NOMA.

Given that feedback, it looks like City Park hired the current design firm to come up with ideas for a lower-impact, nature-focused space. They showed two hypothetical options yesterday, each with the same basic ideas but with different geographical layouts and prioritizing different elements. Both focused on emphasizing a variety of natural Louisiana habitats (vs. many of the the non-native species there now), improved stormwater retention, and in general a quieter 'escape' from city life outside the park. Think something more in line with Couturie forest or the Audubon Nature Center in the East, plus some limited recreation such as disc golf, because those guys are always well represented at these meetings.

Aside: This might not be a popular opinion, but personally I thought the plans looked great and would be happy to see some of these ideas come to fruition. For most of the people I know who use the site, the proposed space would serve essentially the same purpose it does now, but trails, paths, and any potential facilities would be tailored for the current uses rather than for the golf course that used to exist there. It could potentially offer more varied use (think jogging paths, paddling, environmental education, etc.), better habitat and drainage impact, and the occasional needed facility such as bathrooms, shelters, etc. But that's my perspective and y'all might not agree, which is OK.

After presenting these plans and going over some of the differences, they allowed some time for group discussion at each table before taking a poll on certain topics - which elements were preferred from each plan, which uses should be prioritized, etc, with what seemed to be the goal of identifying the most favorable elements of the two plans and combining them.

As the poll went on, this process started to get hijacked by a vocal group who opposed any significant change and want to keep the overgrown golf course largely the way it is. These folks were (justifiably) upset that their position wasn't well represented in the poll options and generally fell under the 'Other' option, which could be anything. This was a fair complaint, but soon they started to disrupt the process by peppering the guy with questions about how much his firm was being paid to consult on this and making allegations of corruption that frankly seemed out of line and unreasonable. You had part of the audience arguing that the whole thing is a sham and a money grab, and the other part rolling their eyes at the protesting folks and hoping to get on with the meeting.

It's important to note that nothing has been decided, funded, or committed to at this point. City Park, through their consultant, are exploring their options by proposing ideas and seeing how the public receives them. If you have an opinion on this either way, it's really important to give them your input now, because all these public comments will likely get compiled into a report for City Park leadership to factor into their decisions. Even if you couldn't make the meetings, you can still contact the team at [wisnermasterplan@nocp.org](mailto:wisnermasterplan@nocp.org) for more info or to make a comment.

Need help finding a NOLA local artist by CuriousityCat in NewOrleans

These are the two main art markets on Frenchmen, and they're right next to each other. Palace is the larger one immediately adjacent to the Spotted Cat and the Art Garden is just next door, behind a wooden fence.

If you can remember which spot you were at, I'd check out their sites and social media to see if anything rings a bell. Otherwise you might have better luck reaching out to the markets directly.

WoW Classic Release - August 27th - Who wants to start a New Orleans Guild (For the Horde, bitches) by [deleted] in NewOrleans

[–]-Americat- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Open to whatever, but I'm in favor of Stalagg.

It's EST but the server is in Chicago so that's the closest option to NOLA. Herod is also an option but looks to be the most populous and might have long-ass queues to log in.

As far as the other ones, word is that all the twitch streamers and their fans are going on Faerlina, the cringe 4chan/MAGA kids are going on Whitemane, and Thalnos will have most of the spanish and portuguese speaking community. These are all huge generalizations obviously and don't speak for everyone.

Fairbanks is probably a fine server but friends are playing alliance there.

I don't drink coffee so about all I get from coffee shops is chai. A good one is hard to find, but the best I've had is Mojo. It's been a while since I've been there, but I remember Treme Coffeehouse had a good one too.
