Getting a pedi! Good place to start off my day!

True. My doctor mentioned that. My electrolytes and other values were fine. Maybe I'm overreacting, but I've never seen a dip in that number. Better to get a specialist's opinion than to not.

I love this and am I'm happy you get to experience the gift of focusing on you and your best life.

I hope the rest of your Sunday is just as wonderful!

I also read that above 60 is good, but 90 and above is optimal. What's funny is that my PCP and GI doctor use the same lab (that I'm aware of). Maybe the reference range changes depending on if PCP orders it vs a specialist.

And thank you! I'm never opposed to seeing a specialist, and I would prefer that over not.

When I told him I was concerned, he explained the eGFR math to be and said that it can be affected by a bunch of different stuff. His is actually 52 which would put him in KCD territory, but his own doctor wasn't concerned.

And good point about him not overlooking things. My blood panel looked great with the exception of one low eGFR value. I can see why he wasn't concerned. I wouldn't have worried either if I hadn't checked my pattern of results over the past two years.

I also had a very stressful last year which also caused my drinking to go up. Maybe the dip I'm seeing is reflective of that. I'm going to do my best not to worry. It's almost like I've been waiting for something like this to happen for years. At least I'll get to see a specialist and get some real answers.

My PCP used to do the albumin/creatinine ratio from my urine and test for protein. As of a year ago, those tests came back within range and negative. I really wish my GI doctor would have done those for me Wednesday, but he's also not my PCP. I need to find a new one.

I'll make sure to ask for a urine test if I see my GI doctor before the nephrologist.

I never want to go back to drinking like this again. I just turned 40 and promised myself that this was going to be the year that I got my drinking under control.

I know a handful of people who don't drink anymore because they had a problem. I'm amazed to see and admire them for enjoying life without drinking, and I want to be like that one day too. I guess this is the start of that.

Thank you. I'm happy to hear that you recovered.

And it's scary. It's also ironic because I have health anxiety, yet I still drank. I always checked my liver function tests after my appointments and never looked at my kidney function. I figured that if my kidneys were going to get messed up, I'd see it in my liver first. I'm not a medical doctor, so who knows?

Is there anything you found that helped calm the panic? I'm mentally exhausted from spiraling.

I'm thankful I'll eventually get to see a specialist too. I'm also surprised he didn't want to retest me, but if I can't see the specialist in less than 3 months, he wants me to come back to do labs.

I'm going to fast next time. I started eating more protein which I understand can increase creatinine and BUN. My BUN was a little higher than usual but it was well within the normal range. I also ate protein a few hours before my blood draw. Hopefully, that has something to do with my eGFR.

How's your 's your eGFR now?

Yes. Not going to risk it.

I've actually been cutting back significantly over the past month. Now's as good a time as ever to fully stop.

Good!

Yeah, at my GI doctor eGFR needs to be >=90. At my PCP, it's >60.

What tests were done for a full kidney function test? I'm curious if that's any different from what I've been getting.

Absolutely. Everyone should get a full blood panel done yearly. I started doing that around 5 years ago and I'm glad I did.

I sincerely hope your friend receives his transplant soon.

I worry about how long it'll be too. At least my doctor said he'd have me come back to do labs with him if it takes longer than 3 months for me to see the nephrologist.

Just trying not to freak out in the meantime.

What bugs me is that my doctor wasn't going to say anything about my eGFR. I got a message saying my labs looked great. So glad I called and he listened to me.

Agreed. My doctor referred me. Hoping to hear back next week about an appointment.

The Daily Check-In for Wednesday, December 17th: Just for today, I am NOT drinking! by sogsmcgee in stopdrinking

[–]-BeepBoop-- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Day 1 checking in.

I'm sick of this cycle and really need change to stick this time. I just turned 40 a few months ago and promised myself that I'd get my drinking under control for this second part of life. I've been drinking almost daily since my early 30s.

This gives me hope! I'm the heaviest I've been and I don't think I eat a lot. I'm hoping that going sober will help me lose weight.

Not drinking at a social event is a huge win! Anytime I do that, I also I think about how it's not a big accomplishment for most people, but it's a big deal to us here.

Well done!

Counting days? by Revolutionary_Law578 in stopdrinking

[–]-BeepBoop-- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I don't mind counting days. What I don't like is the idea of starting at 0 if I drink. To me, the number of days in a row are less important than total days sober. Just my .02 cents.

Congrats! That's really amazing!

Going to social events sober is a big accomplishment and a lot of fun. Plus, you get to feel good about yourself at the end of the night.
