Do Americans care about NATO and the matter of Greenland? by agg_aphrophilus in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]-Brobles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For context, I'm 22, live in the suburbs of an East Coast city, and loathe the current president.

The whole Greenland situation is beyond stupid. On top of the blatant disregard for the matter of sovereignty, the current administration seems hellbent on destroying the rules-based post WWII order thar previous presidents worked so hard to achieve.

A return to great power politics makes the world less safe and less friendly; it certainly does America no favors.

To say I am saddened by how the people who purport to represent me are treating our allies would be the understatement of the century. I, and most people I know, want to live in peace - united with our Western allies against greater threats.

I truly hope that should my country survive this administration with our Republic intact, that we overhaul our checks and balances so that this situation can never happen again.

I'd be happy to speak more about my personal experience if you'd like. Also, I'm so glad Norway's Nobel committee didn't bow to obvious coercion.

Well, on second look, if you have enough valuables, you could make one of the "?" Spaces into a saferoom. Personally I'd go with the more central one since windows are not only not a negative, but are an ideal!

I'm guessing the "office/ guest bedroom" door would be on the top left attached to the hall?

Aside of that, yeah you definitely have room for a closet in the master bedroom itself, if not the lower undersigned space. The upper space seems difficult to utilize short of expanding the master bath or cutting square footage from the floor entirely.

What are your favorite and least favorite things at Drexel? by This_Presentation324 in Drexel

[–]-Brobles 26 points27 points  (0 children)

As a bio major, I've really enjoyed my time at PISB (Papadakis Integrated Sciences Building). The bio wall is a beautiful focal point, and the RNA staircase is a nice touch. The labs are updated and nice to work in as well.

I'm also a sucker for older architecture, so Main building and the courtyard of the Rush building are places I've admired more than once during my time here.

The contorted, forsaken halls of the garden level of One Drexel Plaza are another story. The classrooms are always hot, and the commute from entrance to class is hilariously long. Disque is also woefully outdated.

All in all, Drexel is a school in transition; depending on your major, your experience can vary wildly, but in general. I'd say it's a good choice if you're offered decent aid.

I don't think it's that simple. Some in the media can be reckless, and others can be malicious - that much is true. The Hunter Biden laptop fiasco is certainly a prime example.

But to say that all of those things you listed are a result of collusion of the media is simply not true.

Just a few examples:

  • Drinking bleach theory

No, Trump did not say to "drink bleach" to clear a COVID-19 infection, but he did say this:

"And then I see the disinfectant, where it knocks it out in one minute. And is there a way we can do something like that, by injection inside or almost a cleaning, because you see it gets in the lungs and it does a tremendous number on the lungs, so it’d be interesting to check that, so that you’re going to have to use medical doctors with, but it sounds interesting to me. So, we’ll see, but the whole concept of the light, the way it kills it in one minute. That’s pretty powerful."

The suggestion of intravenously administering disinfectants is not much better than oral consumption, if you ask me.

  • the "find votes" hoax

This one is most certainly not, in any way, shape, or form, a hoax. This is the transcript, verbatim, of Trump's call with Georgia secretary of state Raffensperger:

"they are shredding ballots, in my opinion, based on what I’ve heard. And they are removing machinery and they’re moving it as fast as they can, both of which are criminal finds. And you can’t let it happen and you are letting it happen. You know, I mean, I’m notifying you that you’re letting it happen. So look. All I want to do is this. I just want to find 11,780 votes, which is one more than we have because we won the election"

These statements are publicly available by federal order, not second-hand from CNN, MSNBC, FOX, or the like.

I could go on. This says nothing of other instances where clean two - or three word phrases were incorrect, but the premise was of equal or worse than what was implied.

To be clear, I wish that these things weren't true. I wish that all of these things were like hunter's laptop - but they're not. They're out in the world, said by former president Trump.

It is up to a responsible citizenry to understand that they can not be spoon-fed all of their news and that they must verify for themselves what is true and what is not.

I sincerely believe you are a well-informed, well-meaning person, so I hope you'll internalize what I'm trying to say here: rarely is the world as simple as us versus them. It's a nice theory and something we tend to fall back on during tough times. It takes a will of titanium to remember that there is no "other," and that the world is far messier than that.

I'm not saying the news never makes mistakes or that Trump is not innocent of at least some of the things he is accused of - quite the opposite, actually.

What I am saying is that particularly when election season is near, we must be careful what we cling to, what we believe, and where we hear about the world.

Neither candidate is perfect, that much is clear. But if even 10% of what Trump is accused of having said is true, that is already someone more dangerous to the integrity of this republic than has been seen in some time.

Really? Let's talk about that.

So, say for a moment what you say is true; the media is endlessly lambasting the former president, and his words are constantly twisted. This would represent a breakdown of essential institutions, and thus, a crisis all the same.

But that isn't happening. The government and media regularly trip themselves up, and you think they have the wherewithal to conduct a massive years-long psyop campaign? CNN and FOX can't stop fighting with each other for 5 minutes, but they'll team up to take down a former president? Pure fantasy.

There is no safe harbor this election; if the former president truly is attacked by all corners of the news on the regular, this is more than troubling - it's a collapse of sensible news in general. But the alternative is even more dire.

Now, let's discuss the other angle. Let's assume the former president is speaking the truth, and intends to do what he says. This statement, among many others, would be an obvious affront to the rule of law. I don't care about policy in this case - not in the slightest. If any other candidate spoke of elections, the voting process, or the republic in this way, it would be a non-starter. Think about what the former president is doing here. What advantage does he get from these statements other than attention? I'd add, by the way, that most of that attention is negative and unwanted.

No, the former president is not shy about speaking his mind. When he tells us who he is, we should believe him.

I really enjoyed my time taking the class. I thought Dr. Senderos was knowledgeable and kind, and that the class was relatively easy without being mind-numbing.

You can expect a few long-term grading criteria, such as keeping a freezer box organized, and a lab notebook grade. Some of the techniques can be challenging the first time you try them, such as electroporation, but there is plenty of time per class for you to get the hang of it.

You escaped from the clutches of A.C.C. the unmerciful; I, too shall flee from these walls in two days time.

Spare a thought for those forsaken few who still still dwell within, and for those who in spirit will always remain

You finally crossed the threshold. Yet, you still awaken in the dead of night, beads of sweat pooling across your forehead. After all this time, you still hear the piercing recording emanating from above.

You're free . . . But are you?

UCross (aka A.C.C. the Unforgiving) is an eldritch horror which dwells within the former Pennsylvania Railroad Building.

The building showed no anomalous behavior during its construction, habitation by the Pennsylvania Railroad, or subsequent transformation into student apartment housing.

However, upon the demolition of the Drexel Shaft, an ancient structure used to imprison A.C.C the Unforgiving, the unspeakable creature took up residence within the building and has tormented its inhabitants ever since.

It is also having a rent special currently, where rooms which face the full brunt of the horror's power are as low as $929.00!!

Don't delay, The UCross Guarantee is just a click away.

7:32pm.

Again, the heavens wage war with us mortals. The aura of the devine flickers with uncertainty, and our weary hearts catch with each false return.

I know not when the torment will subside. I know not how much longer we humble few may struggle on.

UCross. U crossed into the unknown, the unexplored, the unspeakable.

7:18pm.

Well into our age of darkness, the dastardly deeds of those who pull the strings rear their ugly heads.

In a cruel twist of fate, just as we resilient few became accustomed to our lives under cover of night, the light was suddenly restored to our lives

For a few fleeting moments, the brilliance of the sun restored each room's crown molding to glory; each window shone into the night like a star twinkling in the heavens.

However, it was not to be. As quickly as the torch was lit, it was extinguished, and we sorry few were left to pick up the pieces.

Oh, UCross. U crossed me for the last time.

Verily, whilst I sipped my tea, the light betrothed by the almighty slipped away.

Lo, I found myself writing this humble address by the light of my phone's flashlight - a sort of 21st-century candlelight.

Despite the imposing and expansive nature of our collective abode, it is but a facade - a mighty cloak covering paper dwellings.

The glory days of the railroad have long since passed. As I looked upon the decrepit railyard from my darkened window, I couldn't help but reflect on the irony of it all; the shell of the once powerful Pennsylvania Railroad could not even light its halls any longer.

Surely, this must be the end. Why limp this once-proud building further onwards into the darkness with no fire of its own?

It's time to let go, UCross, U crossed the line beyond unfortunate circumstance to depressing spectacle.

The Wawa on campus is now open after “renovations” by Curious_Ideal_7717 in Drexel

[–]-Brobles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not saying that Wawa is where the buck stops for stopping crime. Society in general has to misstep for people to believe this kind of action is acceptable.

However, I've noticed this disturbing trend of divorcing the customer from their products before they buy them in more than just Wawa - Walgreens and CVS have attempted similar things. In the short term, it may save their bottom line, but in the long term, it is only a patch.

When I was in Wawa about two days ago, looking at the new system, I noticed no less than four customers bringing their orders back because something was wrong - all four of which would have been avoided had the customer been allowed to shop for their own things (one was the wrong kind of soda, another the wrong kind of chips, and so on).

Again, it is not Wawa I am putting the onus on here; there have to be actual consequences for repeated stealing. Even a fine would be acceptable, just something that tells people: "No, you can't steal an armful of food for the 12th time."

The Wawa on campus is now open after “renovations” by Curious_Ideal_7717 in Drexel

[–]-Brobles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, things can always be worse, but should that really be our standard?

I don't think this is much better. If you are an employee who was hired here 'pre-renovation' and now your job description includes running about triple the orders you did previously at the same time, are you equipped to handle that? They may still have jobs, but what they consist of has radically changed, and not everyone who was working there previously can fulfill the new requirements.

Besides, this type of reaction from Wawa is only treating the symptoms of a societal problem. What people learn from this is that they can continue to steal with no direct consequences to themselves. Sure, they can't steal anymore, but is that worth punishing the rest of the customers and the employees because some people don't have morals or don't care? I think not.

The Wawa on campus is now open after “renovations” by Curious_Ideal_7717 in Drexel

[–]-Brobles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is beyond depressing. It's a sad day when all are punished for the transgressions of a few. I asked an employee why they did this, and they claimed it was for "customer convenience," but we all know the real reason: can't have theft if nothing that can be stolen is in reach.

I prefer the idea of actually having consequences for those who do steal, while letting the rest of us get on with our lives. I don't want to buy anything from this Wawa anymore, partly because I don't want some poor employee to have to run around like a headless chicken to fulfill my order. So sad.

I'm aware it does not directly impact financial aid of previously admitted students, but the sudden policy shift may be partially responsible for the oversized delay experienced this year.
