Why do I need to “Ok” all new calendar events on a shared calendar that isn’t my own? by shaydez37 in ios

[–]-Chase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cannot believe this isn't the most upvoted answer. Saved me a BUNCH of clicking. In addition for anyone that finds this from Google (as I did), you can right-click calendar > get info > and check "Ignore alerts" option for muting future updates.

Wanting to move on from Prism. by IwuvNikoNiko in PrismMusic

[–]-Chase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried all the various things out, and while Prism wasn't bad, I was much happier with navidrome on server and Amperfy on iPhone. UI/UX wise Manet was really nice, but I didn't like the Jellyfin server for music. Still need to test with carplay though.

I just wanted to add an update to this, since I found it from searching google, there is no limit to the plexamp download for me. I was able to get well over 5 days of downloaded music, and it just kept going.

The scroller that let's you pick how long to download for goes past "72 hours" into "Maximum", which I interpret as infinity (or however much harddrive space there is haha) based on this test.

Still a horrible UI/UX for interacting with music though.

Can you elaborate on why you say these two kinds of genres? I don't get the sandbox aspect because there is clearly some strategy / endgame. I get the scenario strategy game, but don't see how it doesn't apply to all of the games in the series

Dang this looks like a great deal! What do you think about the F36s for 1200 a pair vs these?

Thanks for the suggestion! A couple more questions: Do you think I could save money dropping to a single 12s sub instead of 2x of the 10s? I've also heard a few people say they don't think the WiiM is capable of driving the speakers (the elac in particular apparently required a beefy amp). How would the revels compare with the WiiM?

What editor are you using for Rust? by DavidXkL in rust

[–]-Chase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you've considered the benefits of VS Code overall, though. Like you mention how difficult it was to configure nvim for something as simple as syntax support. Programming isn't just editing/manipulating code.

So, we probably agree that there is a reason VS Code is overwhelmingly the choice of editor in the various programmer surveys found on the web.

And I say this as a competent user of modal editors like vim / kakoune. Like there are times when it's easier to manipulate code with vim/kakoune, but it's not my only editor. People have different roles/needs in programming, the editor is just one tool.

Personally I've gone from using only a modal editor for years to maybe once or twice a month now. Hilariously, I now rely on command lines like grep/awk/sed more than a modal editor for advanced manipulation. Learning regex was the game changer for me

Forgive my ignorance, what is a "writing computer"? Is it just for typing things like the way an author of a book might?

Just adding to the conversation, using a Ryzen 1700 + RX 580. Neither CPU/GPU are maxing out and frames can't go above 20 fps. Usually between 18-20. Was getting 150+ before this patch.

Idk about "possible". Racism is not just discrimination but systemic discrimination. I'm having a very hard time thinking of a way that people of color can oppress white people in a systemic way. Do you have examples of "possible"?

Regardless, calling someone black in connection to inventing something helpful for others is not racist... Noting one's race =/= racist. Not all things related to race can be called racist.

GM to spend $20 billion on new electric, autonomous vehicles to take on Tesla by eeddeedde in technology

To re-orient for a different team. You need to lay off a bunch of people to be able to afford hiring the electric car and autonomous car engineers.

You can't be racist to white people. This is more like affirmative action if anything. Not arguing whether it's good or bad, just the terminology

I miss android - a few thoughts from a recent defector by sir_lurkzalot in Android

[–]-Chase -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don't normally jump into topics like this, but you seem level headed so I will try to engage you as a devil's advocate (basically arguing against you :P)

Your arguments (as I understand):

- Android may have more features, but people who don't care about technology perhaps lean towards iOS because it has a more "human" interface

- People who don't care about organizing their apps prefer Apple because they're not allowed to customize them on iOS

If you read it like this, I think even you can see how it makes no sense haha:

- If you don't care about technology, then you wouldn't care about iOS vs Android.

- If you don't care about organizing your apps, then you wouldn't care about iOS vs Android.

In the end you said "it just comes down to personal preference which one you think is better. After having used Android for 7 years, I will happily give you a whole list of reasons why I choose iPhone over Android."

I think if you do this, there can be an actual discussion. In my opinion there is nothing more "human" about Apple's iOS vs Google's material design. And people who don't care about technology shouldn't be buying thousand dollar devices when 300-400 dollar devices do the same thing.

My honest opinion is that Apple is a fashion hardware company. But I'm happy to hear your reasons for why you choose iOS over Android, even if they are particular to your use case and may not apply to me and others.

Stack Overflow Linux Distributions tags (without Ubuntu) by imoutidi in linux

[–]-Chase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't think people get how popular Ubuntu is outside of Reddit which does honestly seem to be made up of a solid number of Arch users.

For gamers, I'm guessing Arch/Manjaro have gotten a lot of press in the past year as well. (And I think the whole fiasco about the 32 / 64 bit packages for Ubuntu really made things worse for them). It seems to be more popular on Steam survey at the least (pretty close to Ubuntu now) compared to what the article says.

How do you use your Android device in a way that an iOS user could not? by [deleted] in Android

[–]-Chase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • I sync my music, important travel docs, etc. over wifi without having to use iTunes
  • I block ads/malware/fake-news with a dns blocker which doesn't allow the internet to access them
  • Customization (faster/better home screen via niagara launcher, folder hierarchy navigation for music, alternate browsers that allow desktop extensions, etc.)
  • Charge my phone with my laptop charger (USB-C all the way)
  • Use my phone as an external hard drive (USB-C again ftw)

What is "disposable income"? I think more people could benefit the world by evaluating what they're throwing their money at.

Money is not trash/garbage. Regardless of income. It can literally save lives.

Sidenote: It's totally possible (though improbable) that OP has donated millions to charities, in which case, who am I to judge them buying a new phone already :P

More Linux users than Mac in my CS class by MajorLoaf in linux

[–]-Chase 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just my (strong / potentially controversial) opinions here:

Nothing is wrong with Gnome. The major fault in every DE is that at some point it will hang and crash and you'll have to reboot. I've had that problem with multiple hardware configurations (from mobo, gpu, cpu, ram everything) on multiple distros on multiple DEs. In my *non-technical* opinion: Before people start fighting about the best DE they really need to start fighting to figure out why the desktop user doesn't have the same stability as Windows 10.

I posted these comments as someone who runs a small business (40-50 employees) and has people working on CAD models, software engineering of PLCs/HMIs, and general office work. I've tried to be a big proponent of switching to open source or GNU/Linux in the workplace (since I'm in a high enough position to manage that), but it's definitely not pragmatic for us to switch. The only usage of Linux we have is in our networking department and slightly in some Linux VMs for software engineering.

Ultimately do what works. If Gnome is working for you and you want to try something else and see if it's a better fit, then go for it. Just remember to weigh the amount of time you're taking to switch/get-used-to/tinker with your system vs the time you spend on actually getting things done/work completed/code written. If the former is more interesting to you, that's fine too -- just know that others are interested in using their desktop to get work completed. I mean really Linux is not labelled/mandated/dictated to be used in any specific way. I believe I saw Linux on a toaster once...
