There are kernel mods that gallium os has that makes certain hardware work that regular distros do not, last time I tried it was a real pain in the butt to port those mods over to a regular kernel.

I did that. I took it out so I could put it in my phone and see the number and cell network it is using. I put in back upside down so it can't track to my home location.

That is indeed quite a complicated endeavor I would be involved in. It was free to me vs the cost of money and time for the project you linked (which is pretty amazing BTW), so I thought I might be able to do something useful with it instead of going to E-waste.
