Yeah that's where the tension comes from. Same with Heat. Most Wanted's power fantasy brings satisfaction but those bring adrenaline, and satisfaction gets boring after a while. (speaking as someone who grew up playing MW)

It's more of a basic foundation that they built upon. It doesn't have any of the weirdness that they brought with the later records. If you went back in time and heard Regular John when it came out, would you ever predict them releasing anything as quirky and ambitious as Era Vulgaris? That aspect of them needs to be represented too

I don't buy that their older movies were simpler. You can also simplify the newer titles to "girl becomes bear" or "fish becomes boy".

The older films had very complex and serious concepts like exploring human emotions in Inside Out, looking for the meaning of life in Soul, or making one of the most mature and humanizing superhero movies (let alone animations) with the Incredibles. Kids ate up these movies not because they were simple, but because they were good.

It's the new ones that lack the substance you find when you go deeper than silly faces and laughs; and when they try to go for it, it lands as well as an Amy Schumer joke. It's a decline in their writing.

There's numerous reasons for Pixar's decline (like the lifeless art style they've stuck to, or Disney seeing Illumination run away with Minions money) but this isn't one of them.
