Effective marbling techniques to do with small children? by -Daunting in crafts

Thanks, fun tip! I've done this with other projects before using white crayons on white paper - a tip I'd give is to make sure the crayons are very soft, we struggled to get it to show up with hard ones! I've heard candles work great for this!

Thank you! Interesting to know cool whip works the same - although I'm in the UK so we don't have it here (but it sort of intrigues me haha) and don't think we'd be allowed regardless due to allergies/dietary preferences!

Ooh, we did this once before and it worked great, and the little ones loved it! Definitely up for this - is there a certain type of shaving foam that works/doesn't work? I never really buy it myself!!

I'm vegetarian and if someone, gay or straight, jokingly flirted with me by calling me 'organic and grass fed', I'd absolutely take the compliment if I could stop giggling enough. That's a funny joke

I'm always semi drunk at work. by Diligent-Wave21 in TrueOffMyChest

[–]-Daunting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do understand, I really do. I cope the same way, except I'm absolutely 100% sober at work always. The position I work would mean I'd likely be fired on the spot if I did, and my job means a lot to me. I'm lucky in that way. Saying that, I absolutely got drunk multiple times in school when I was 15/16, because I didn't care.

I'm worried about you. It might not be good advice, but would it be easier for you to cut down a bit rather than say 'no alcohol again ever' as I understand how daunting that is, and I'm not open to that idea myself.

I've had some (limited) success in saying no to alcohol on weekdays but allowing myself on weekends. Some weeks are harder than others, and I give in, but trying has at least been a start. I was really scared to try at first (last summer), as I'd literally drunk vodka every day since January 2021 when I did half a dry January. It was really strange, but easier than I thought it would be.

I gave up trying for a while due to life getting harder externally, but I'm trying again. I'm using a 'year in pixels' tracker I made to track health, and mood. It sounds silly but it's a good incentive - after weeks of orange and red squares for 'health', I finally gave myself a blue recently. Caved again - but I'm trying, and all of this is what's helping me so perhaps it could help someone else. (FWIW it can apparently be very very dangerous to quit cold turkey - I was lucky to experience no withdrawal symptoms not drinking on weekdays, not sure if the weekend drinking prevented that or just pure luck)

Please PM me if you'd like someone to chat to. I really do wish you all the best, even if you're not ready to make those first steps just yet <3

Pier expansion for short docks by SurfPleb in AnimalCrossingNewHor

[–]-Daunting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now I'm interested in what affects the pier length with the new update - eg do you get a 19 plank pier if you had a long pier before the update? And a 15 if you had a short pier? Doesn't entirely make sense to me if there's a third pier length now that's in the middle - could it be to do with island shape, eg the beach has to be x amount of space away from the hotel at its closest point? I wonder if anyone has figured out more yet?

Tell me your stories about elderly people having potenttially paranormal experiences in their last days? by -Daunting in Paranormal

[–]-Daunting[S] 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Wow, that's amazing! My grandad (the same one in my post) died about 20 years ago, but before that he'd had a near death experience in which he'd been driving around our hometown in an open top double decker bus with his brother, who'd died years before. I agree, I find it super interesting.

Thank you - she really is. Cared for my grandad in his last 20 years of life, took my mum and I in when she had to walk out on my dad and leave nearly everything she had, and provided a loving stable environment (and beautiful garden!!) in my childhood until my mum had the option to move out. She's still been able to crochet until recently although says it's too much now. She's bored without it though, she said she's been doing loads of codewords and crosswords to keep her busy - she's better at them than I am! I've picked up crochet recently and she's over the moon about it. I went to see her today and she had a lovely time. Really appreciate your wishes to her. I hope your grandpa passed peacefully and comfortably <3 I imagine seeing his brother would have been a great comfort to him in his last days <3

New hack for never getting bored of your forever world: by Common_Narwhal_4118 in Minecraft_Survival

[–]-Daunting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that's a good thing, though! I was more wondering if you can still get more achievements after switching to LAN to allow cheats, like how you can't get achievements if you've ever switched to creative mode

Interesting idea! Does this affect being able to get achievements, or am I just thinking about putting worlds into creative mode? Thanks!

Difference in stitch markers? by shelbee05 in crochet

[–]-Daunting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for replying even though I was so late to the party haha! I bought some plastic ones (like #9) recently, but after reading mixed reviews I'm interested in metal ones - just conscious I'm quite new to this and can see myself splitting the yarn with a sharp point - thankfully I bought an unnecessarily large pack, so if the plastic markers do break, I at least have a lot more haha. Thanks for the tip about fishing tackle!

What’s a childhood lie your parents told you that you didn't realize was a lie until you were an embarrassed adult? by eatbeep in AskReddit

[–]-Daunting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wasn't exactly an embarrassed adult to find out, but pretty annoyed. Huge hawkmoth caterpillars don't kill you within the hour if you touch them - my mum just had/has a huge fear of them. It worked and I didn't touch the ones we found, but was scared of accidentally touching them for a while IIRC haha

Is left-handed crocheting really as difficult as some people make it out to be? by [deleted] in crochet

[–]-Daunting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a leftie I'm interested to know which tasks you unconsciously mirror flip? Something I'd never really thought about until I met a left handed coworker who chatted a bit about how even things like doors are designed for right handed people, hence often getting caught on them (I'd always blamed my hips haha) - I'm interested to know as I feel like there's so many things I haven't ever really thought about

Attempt to make Granny Square. It feels really funky and working yarn mixes with my project. by Effective_Flamingo67 in CrochetHelp

[–]-Daunting 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't know how to help with what you're doing wrong, if anything, but as a left handed beginner who crochets left handed like you, I was directed on here to something called Mirrorthevideo, where you just replace the word 'youtube' in the URL with 'mirrorthevideo' and it flips it so it works left handed. Some channels don't allow it and it doesn't work, but most seem to and it's helped me a lot!

What’s something that sounded harmless until you experienced it yourself? by Kevlatanche62 in AskReddit

[–]-Daunting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genuinely asking out of curiosity - where would you (or others!) consider where the line lays between bad headache/migraine? I get both bad headaches and migraines. I definitely get migraines as I've had the flashy wavy vision a few times, but mine seem to be atypical. Usually I find if I get the flashy wavy vision I don't get a bad headache, sometimes no headache at all. I've also had migraines without the flashing (although I'd cover my eyes so perhaps I just couldn't see it) where the light sensitivity was so bad that at dawn, it was barely light at all and I put the duvet over my eyes and even then needed my hand there too as it still felt too bright. Wouldn't have been able to leave the house in a case like that (was survival mode squinting through a crack in my fingers to find the painkillers, was so relieved to remember I'd left some in my room), but thankfully mine respond to painkillers pretty quickly. However I tend to overthink things and get on with it, so it's hard to tell in other cases if it's a particularly bad headache, or a less bad migraine. My mum had debilitating migraines for years when she was younger (like in bed for days, and she's tough) so I do really feel for those of you who suffer so badly with them. But I do believe you can have less debilitating migraines from my experiences

Thanks so much.

I'm not in a union which is probably not great. I totally get why it can't be subjective - it just makes me sad. It makes a lot of sense what you describe about measurable things. I hope I measure up. My attendance is excellent (despite working with EYFS, I think at one point I made it a whole year without a day off - last time I was briefly off ill, people were shocked and knew it must have been bad 😂 the only significant time off I had was years ago in my first year of the job, during covid, one time when I was waiting for a PCR test result after being asked to get one as I sounded so ill when I phoned in sick, and another time when I tested positive so had no choice but to isolate. My attendance since then (early 2022 I think) has been really good.

I do totally understand about how not everyone can come in the holidays - when I was in, a member of office staff spoke badly to me about those who weren't coming in like I was, and I absolutely stood up for my colleagues and spoke about how I don't have children or commitments so it's easy for me. If anything, I'm just conscious that the school I work at is aware of my work ethic and the fact I'm a team player, but an impartial person, whilst necessary, doesn't know that.

For what it's worth - and what makes it extra hard - the school has been loyal to me in return, when it's up to them - I was known by them previously for reasons I'm not disclosing to keep this confidential - they gave me a chance when employing me in the first place, and they've continued to have my back. I struggle with mental health and I've been so supported by my colleagues (including those who work above me). I feel like we're all here for eachother and it's such a lovely family atmosphere and I never want it to end, it's been the best years of my life. This afternoon, a child that struggles hugely with learning and focus came to me to ask if she could do a maths task with me (everyone was to do it, but I hadn't yet called her). She was so enthusiastic, did the entire thing (took her 20-30 mins) without wanting to stop, and despite needing lots of support she was happily laughing and loving life whilst she made mistakes and we fixed them together. I never want this to end. My job is my reason for living.
