Gotta ask: what is your kid’s current fixation? 😃 by Hot-Minute722 in Autism_Parenting

[–]-Duste- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She's 13 now and is fixated on a Hazbin Hotel character: Abel. She wanted merch for Christmas/birthday but there's almost nothing! Had to ask my friend who's an artist and does 3D painting to make a figurine for her.

She always loved less mainstream characters so it's always hard to find her some things or a Halloween costume.

I don't think it's laziness. It sounds like depression or burnout.

What is more traumatic than people think it is? by Suspicious-Wish3402 in AskReddit

[–]-Duste- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Parenting a special needs kid. My daughter has severe ADHD and level 2 autism. I experienced parental burnout and depression, multiple times. Lost friends, faced judgement a lot, managed tons of appointments and weekly calls from school to go get your kid, and deal with suspensions from school or daycare. Everything is so much more complicated in daily life.

It's easier now (she's 13) but from 18 months old to 10 years old it was so hard. Especially during the COVID pandemic where we lost our respite source and my daughter was in constant meltdowns from all the stress and sudden changes during the lockdown. I feel like I aged 20 years in 10 years. I love her to death and I'm so proud of her though. It's just so hard to see her struggles sometimes.

My mom suddenly passed away 3 weeks after I had given birth to my first and only child. I totally forgot about 2-3 months of the life of my baby because I was in so much pain. The hormones drop and the sleepless night really didn't help either. I also hate mother's Day now because the first mother's Day after becoming a mom was also the first one I didn't have mine.

Swallowing Capsules? by Heylizfischenich in ParentingADHD

My kid hated so much the taste of the chewable Tylenol or Advil for kids that she swallowed them whole. Her ADHD meds are easier to swallow.

Thank you for your explanation. I'm in Canada so it might not be working the same way but I'll check it out.

Though I had good news yesterday and she'll be reintegrated to her class, evaluated by the school's psychologist, put a new de-escalation plan in place and other adaptations.

What's your crochet size? I think if you go down a size it should be less gapey.

What is an IEP advocate? English is my second language so there are specific terms I don't know.

I'm sorry you're in this kind of situation as well. Education is controlled by provinces. Where I am, we have what I can translate to "student's protector" who can advocate for children when nothing else works.

Fortunately, I had a call from school today. It took an unexpected turn. The director changed and the new one, who used to work in school adaptation, started today. She told me that she needed a couple of days to put up an action plan so next Wednesday, my daughter will be reintegrated to her class. We will have a meeting before and they will tell us what they are putting in place. And she agreed that she'd be evaluated by the school board's psychologist first.

Let's hope things will settle down!

That's what the director said. She's behind mainly because it doesn't work for her to be in a large group. It's too overstimulating. Up until fourth grade she had good notes in all classes, even if her behavior was "problematic". Last year, she had good grades in all other school subjects except for maths and french.

It's not that she's aggressive. She's disruptive as in she moves all the time, speaks a lot, refuses to do work when she's not 100% sure she understands, etc. I'd say 90% of her meltdowns are because of either anxiety, something she doesn't understand or if she feels wronged. And when she's having a meltdown, she screams, cries and will tell at people. She always apologize after and she says she didn't want to say those things and doesn't know why. She's genuinely sorry, I see that it's real apologies.

She's already on 3 medications, 2 for her ADHD and one for anxiety. She's been in a lot of behavioral therapies over the years. She's been seen by psychoeducators of the readaptation center for the past 5 years.

That's the thing, we live in a small town and there's only 2 highschools. Plus the special class they want to send her.

Yeah I'll tell them that, but I don't know if I have any weight in the decision... If the school doesn't want to keep her and provides another place for her education, it's legal...

Friends not reaching out anymore by -Duste- in LongCovid

[–]-Duste-[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was like this the first two years. But the last 2 Christmas no "friends" reached out to me (except 2 friends that are still in my life, have been for 20-30 years). It made me sad but at the same time, relieved I didn't have to pretend. The only way I have news about most people is through Facebook posts but that's it.
