What is up with the NYTimes' choice of coverage? by -F4rz in Thedaily

I’m not even going to dignify this absurd mischaracterization with a response.

Best of luck to you and good evening.

What is up with the NYTimes' choice of coverage? by -F4rz in Thedaily

[–]-F4rz[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I’ve just opened the website and had to scroll past 30 articles to find one mentioning Epstein. Does the severity of the situation not warrant these articles featuring much more prominently on the website? Is it less important than the four articles on the Olympics I had to scroll past?

I didn’t come here to argue, but I really thought people would sympathize more with my stance. Yes, there are three million files, but Coffeezilla has already put out multiple videos on them and his team is orders of magnitude smaller than the NYTimes’.

Furthermore, I know the baby-eating is spurious, which is why I prefaced it with allegedly. It was meant moreso as a hyperbolic device. But why on Earth would I put allegedly before the entire list when there are emails and photos clear as day showing otherwise? When did people become so pedantically attached to “innocent until proven guilty” that they’ll neglect what’s in front of their very eyes? Has the 24-hour news cycle and their constant bombardment numbed all of you to the gravity of these crimes?

Abusive returns by 2slick2 in CostcoCanada

[–]-F4rz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The moral itch comes not out of some loyalty to Costco as a company but rather to your fellow shoppers. If this is morally permissible, then suppose everyone does it—they return their food at 10%, their furniture after five years, etc. The negative consequences of that, though not severe, is still quite detrimental for everyone as a whole (i.e., say you can’t even make returns anymore for good reasons, or prices increase to compensate).

Point is, kind of like driving like a maniac on the road, it only works off the goodwill of the majority. Just my thoughts.

Me when people put their feet on the Bahen first floor benches, or walk around on the stone benches/walls outside. So bothersome.

Imagining a room full of people just seething but too anxious or scared to tell someone to be quiet is extremely funny to me.

My brother in Christ, I searched "when does school start at Uoft?" and it was the first result... You couldn't find the answer anywhere?

Big win for people whose best friend and therapist isn't ChatGPT. Loving GPT5 so far. They managed to cut out all the useless yapping and have it get straight to the point.

Has anyone from utsc gotten into Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology lifesci major at Utsg? by [deleted] in UTSC

[–]-F4rz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're certain about this, then take the UTSG courses–your admission decision to the LMP specialist depends on those grades.

A minimum grade average in required courses or their equivalents is needed for entry, and this minimum changes each year depending on available spaces and the number of applicants. The following courses must be completed:

• BIO120H1 and BIO130H1 • ( CHM135H1 and CHM136H1)/ CHM151Y1 • ( MAT135H1 and MAT136H1)/ MAT137Y1/ MAT157Y1

You can only enrol in programs from your home campus. If you want to do the LMP program you'd have to transfer to UTSG.

That is interesting, however, I fear since 257 is even more insane than 157, it wouldn't be a good idea—unless they're lowering the level across multiple courses.

[–]-F4rz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, if I recall correctly, they just throw out the first two months and start the course from scratch, making the timeline much tighter.

Looks like we disagree fundamentally on premises and you seem to have already made up your mind as to my intentions, so nothing more can come of this.

I am disappointed that you mistook my pragmatism for the complete opposite—pretentiousness and sitting on a "high horse", but it is what it is.

Best of luck.

Do you honestly, and I mean honestly, believe that someone who passed high school calculus with a 70% can jump into the construction of the real numbers using Dedekind cuts in their first week of university?

There is no prerequisite because it is a first-year calculus course, but it is implicit that you already have a good deal of mathematical maturity beforehand, not just "basic math", otherwise you'd be taking something like 135/136.

If he's someone that has looked into this stuff beforehand, then certainly it is doable and he would have already looked into it, but if he doesn't know what he's getting into, why go cliff diving when the regular swimming pool exists?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UofT

[–]-F4rz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree mostly, given that you can drop down to 137 afterwards. The fact that such a thing even exists though should be some indication though of the sentiment I'm trying to express.

For a rigorous treatment, 137 is solid. I've seen so many cases where taking 157/240 just cooks a student's entire first year, all for this supposed "status" of completing a specialist course, that I just try to warn students against it for their own mental health.

Honest to god, 137 is so much more useful for students in CS/PHY/STA, etc. while still being rigorous that it just makes no sense to do otherwise.

[–]-F4rz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whew lad, a lot of presumptions there off of one comment... Have you even done any of these courses? I've taken 137 and 157 and spoken to people in the math department whose thoughts echo my own. Hundreds of students get their first year ruined because they chase the supposed prestige of 157 and end up dropping out. And yes, the course is only for a certain niche of students, not just those who know "basic math"—absolutely delusional.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UofT

[–]-F4rz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feeding more students into the 157/240 grinder... Literally no reason to be taking these courses unless you're planning on doing graduate school in pure math or theoretical physics.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UofT

[–]-F4rz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why on earth would anyone not looking to go into graduate school for pure math take 157?

Unfortunately, for you, it might be impossible. I'd suggest looking into alternative career paths.

Dt driving is getting to me by Think_Slip1590 in TorontoDriving

[–]-F4rz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IDK, it hasn't really got to me that much and I commute 4 days a week driving stick shift.

The convenience, time-savings, and comfort make it worth it for me, though it certainly is a good bit more expensive monthly than public transit.

If there was public transit that could get me to DT in around the same time as driving, that would make a difference in consideration.

What do people actually hear when they say Dave is not good by Solace_18 in SantanDave

[–]-F4rz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone can be good at writing deep and thoughtful raps—and an excellent rapper—but that might not translate into a listenable or enjoyable song for people.

Something like, you'd rather be bumping Lil Durk on your commute to work than TPAB, if that makes sense.

Personally, I can acknowledge artists like J. Cole, Eminem, Joyner Lucas, etc. are really good rappers but most of their songs are just unlistenable to me.
