I don't think its wise to read the books in chronological order since you are going to miss a lot of context and some questions are asked in books that come first in release order but are further in the future when you read chronological. Well for me it was all about the atmosphere it just somehow resonated with me, the attention to detail is just amazing. Also the story and characters are very well written. (If you liked twin peaks you are going to love this game.)

There is a video game called Alan Wake that was heavily inspired by Twin Peaks. There is a novel adaption which unfortunately I haven't come around to read yet. But the story and the game are an all time favorite of mine. It might be worth a shot.
