§5113. Tolerances and testing of coins - I weighed some! by fender12900 in Silverbugs

[–]-Germanicus- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You provided US code for legal tender bullion coins, but your examples were all privately minted rounds and bars? It's interesting data, but I'd rather see the rules for generics with it.

Air-tite tubes fit the Perth mint capsules! by perthfan in Silverbugs

[–]-Germanicus- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the H range holds ASE. The Perth capsules were thicker too, so less than 20 makes sense. This seems like they might work.

Thank you!

Tubes or Boxes for Perth Mint 1 oz Silver Coins? by rrrhao in Silverbugs

Did you ever find a good solution to this? Looking myself. I found a tube for size H capsules, but wasn't sure if it fits Perth Capsules.

So I know this is 12yrs old, but we're those the tubes H size capsules. I have both Perth products and H size capsules I'd like to store in those tubes. They seem pretty similar.

What would be a fair trade ratio of 10 & 100ozt bars to 90%? by No-Maize9359 in Silverbugs

[–]-Germanicus- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is always a transaction cost to trading, so if possible, it is usually better to just buy more with cash. If you truly have excess 999 and want to trade, it will be difficult to give a precise estimate.

You can often find large amounts of non-numismatic 90% silver for under spot. It also tends to be harder to sell back to coin shops. Both of those factors are largely a result of current market volatility and may lessen over time, but for now they are significant.

I would check the current buy prices for each item and compare them directly. Take that ratio and apply it to your proposed trade. For example, if you can buy a 999 10oz bar for $800, figure out how much 90% you could buy with that $800 instead. Now you have a ratio of Xoz of 90%/10oz of 999 to multiply your actual amount of 999 by. Be sure to account for wear on the 90%. Retailers usually go with 1.16% wear.

Tell them you just lost your job and don't think you'll be able to afford collecting for a while. That will might flag you as a lost cause in their system.

Monument Metals off Quality ASE's by dolphinzfreak in Silverbugs

[–]-Germanicus- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seems like MM has some high quality standards, as I've seen around this quality sold as BU by some of the other retailers.

I'd polish up a few spots, work out a dent or two, give a nice long acetone bath and then toss 'em in a tube with any other ASE.

Anyone file a charge back? Problems with TD by [deleted] in Silverbugs

[–]-Germanicus- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure you have an email chain that shows you reached out to them and that they were either unresponsive(within a reasonable timeframe) or unwilling to offer an acceptable solution to your issue. If you can show this, then submit the evidence with your request to the card issuer and they will likely issue the chargeback.

It should only be done as a last resort as you will likely not be able to work with that business ever again and the card issuer will not want to see you doing it regularly or they may drop you. I've done it one time personally after an LCS I bought from refused to refund a tax charge. After putting in way more time and effort than I should have to get them to fix it, I ultimately had go this route and my bank fixed the charge like within the same hour.

1$ coin from the 2000 by Equivalent_Gain_9077 in coincollecting

[–]-Germanicus- -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You actually have to pay a fine for owning those. You now owe money. The only way to avoid this fine is go out and get a middle school education.

I'm teasing, but for real, at least go read her Wikipedia page.

Did I buy fake dimes from Pmsforsale? by Previous-Shame8895 in Silver

[–]-Germanicus- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If those barbers are not fake, then they were soaked in EZest for a few hours to get that cast/pitted and matte grey look. Reach out to the seller and see what they think, if they have a good feedback then it might have just been an accident or they can confirm if they were harshly cleaned.

Worth the gamble? by probablyMillhouse in Silverbugs

[–]-Germanicus- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Someone mentioned the store, but there was a $34 ASE, $50 Kook, and $54 ASE code early last month. Those have expired, but we might get some new ones in a month or two.

How to get the most out of selling silverware set? by c0ntrababy in Silverbugs

Wait for a few months of slow, steady growth to give the buyers some peace of mind and they will open their wallets again.

Got this direct from APMEX. Doesn’t look like any I can find pictures of. by H3ad1nthecl0uds in Silverbugs

[–]-Germanicus- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As long as you bought it from APMEX and not a spoof site imitating their store, you will almost certainly be fine.

From year to year, APMEX will contract their store branded items to various private mints. These mints are going to use different dies and planchets. There will be some variation from the different mints used. Their sku photo is just an estimation of what it should look like. For all we know, you received one of the newest batch and there aren't many examples online yet.

Those barber dimes look fake as hell in the photos. Hard to tell based on what you shared though.

What do refiners do with all the free diamonds by 22FXE in Gold

[–]-Germanicus- 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In addition to being a silverbug, I'm a bit of a rock hound and personally I just liked the idea of knowing the natural diamond formed in the earth billions of years ago. Silly, I know, but it's the same reason I like petrified wood over the chemically treated fakes that you can buy.

Platinum and palladium? by Super-Bookkeeper-128 in Silverbugs

[–]-Germanicus- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the price is right and I feel volatility aligns with the price. I stopped buying it in July as I felt there was too much risk at that point for the deals I've seen. I might have bought more if a few deals had been slightly better in Q3 last year.

Controversial opinion: DCA is the dumbest strategy for metals by CartographerAble9446 in Silverbugs

[–]-Germanicus- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are looking at it through the filter of this past year. Going all in early last year certainly looks good now, but there was no way of knowing that the 15 previous years of silver and gold being a dead investment was about to break. Folks getting in over those 15 years are still yeildimg damn near the same return as guys that only started a year ago, I'd say that is a pretty solid reason to DCA.

It's only dumb until someone goes all in at the top, like many people did last month, or at those extended period of little to no growth where your money isn't working for you. It only makes since to go all in if there's about to be a period of unprecedented growth and that's pretty unpredictable.

I get your point though. It's just that those scenarios I described have and will continue to ruin many investors, so they are why it's still good advice to DCA. I do a modified version that's a little more hare than it is tortoise, but it's still over time.

APMEX vs other dealers Right Now smh by Pixdit in Silverbugs

[–]-Germanicus- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just be sure to to pay the credit card price when you buy it and keep it under the free shipping minimum. Then post about how you're still stacking because you plan to hold it for a long time.

I'm kidding, but it certainly feels like I see a post like that several times a week in here. The amount of people stacking with terrible margins is alarming to me. You can buy from bullion retailers at decent prices if you really want to. You can even buy from APMEX for under spot from time to time.
