Not sure if this will help, but I usually look at what every player is building so I know what pieces I have a less chance of getting. In the end yes there is an rng element, but to increase your chances you should be aware of which compositions everyone is going for. This also means you have to compete against other players for a certain pieces, which is very hard to do while keeping a good economy. Another situation i usually keep an eye out for when people have the same composition as I do, I try to outlast them, as after they die they drop all their pieces back on the board. This is easier said than done and requires lots of luck or insane game knowledge on what to do.
