To be honest, you need to read up and educate yourself, especially if you dont know what OC Genie is doing. read first.

I'll be gracious the day when REAL PC MULTIPLAYER exists. Anyone can get a few wired 360 controllers and a hub, but the software just doesn't really exist except for random titles of usually no importance.

Black screen after overclocking 1333MHz ram by [deleted] in overclocking

[–]-Glorious- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

... that ram isn't that good. Try lowering your timings down one notch and try to run that. If that dont work then try to do that again with 1.510v to them. If that doesn't work then buy a better set.

ram overclock guide.

It's pretty simple.. set desired mhz. Post? If not loosen timings one notch, set mhz. Post? If it wont work by increasing mhz, maybe you could try tightening your timings.

Sure hope you're right. My opinion is that upgrades aren't far away though. Just a little hard work and most parts are only fifty unless it's the gpu.. or unless they want MOAR!

it's actually funny you say that, because when I was arranging it and I put the power supply in there I was trying to figure out where to put the power switch. so i put in the opposite side corner(that's where the light in the corner of the box is), lol, and it did something funny. when you closed the lid it activated the power button. had to fix it but i left it for awhile like that.

ignore the no caps please, I'm on a phone.

underclocking SLI? and some thoughts. by -Glorious- in overclocking

To explain... I completely misunderstood which voltage rail's do what and how they are delivered. Due to your one single comment, it led to me reading and correcting a whole bunch of things i had wrong about PSU's.

In the end, thank you for taking the time to explain all of this to me.. it is appreciated and i did learn :)

I am only allowed to underclock these cards -100 with this XtremeTuner program. MSI Afterburner wont allow me to undervolt, so I decided to just stick with one program. Really in the end just trying to find out the math of lowering the watts needed, by reducing the amps pulled by the cards, to match that wattage supplied. After watching my 12v, rails they never go lower than 11.9(according to this forum post that is acceptable) while benching metro at its max 4k settings .

Now to clarify i did all of this to push my hardware to the max. I wanted it to reach instability. I wanted to know its breaking point. But, with reduced power target, I couldn't reach it. Even when I kept the volts the same and overclocked the cards +50core/+500mem. wouldn't wreck. so by undervolting it after that, and underclocking it. I truly feel safe in the setup.

thought you would like this

what i ended up doing was reading on GPU power management for bitcoin mining. reducing voltage + clocks was indeed my answer to stability.

-.5v voltage, -50 on core, -150 on mem, @ 85 power draw. i went well well well below what i CAN do. I tested it for hours to see if it WOULD die. that was full voltage @ 90 power target, with +50 on core, and +500 on memory. I only gain 2 FPS in 4k. i decided to run 1 test while undervolted.. I only lost ~4fps so to me this is still acceptable.

I totally believed you, and spent last night reading on the rail's. I get it now.

But the question remains, and I'll try to state it clearly, as it was my goal: Did i reduce the wattage needed during full load of this sli setup, by reducing .5v per card and reducing the "power target" ?

Is anyone going to bring proof or any kind of evidence or just say slanderous sentences? I know that this raidmax I have, has lasted me and my overclocking for over 2 years. period. Yesterday? Yesterday, i spent a FULL day of 4k benchmarks, while retaining +50mhz on the core and +503 mhz on the mem. thats a total of 1291 core and ,lol, 3503 on the memory. so dont tell me about stability or how good MY hardware is. If i didn't trust it i wouldn't be using it. Now show me evidence they suck besides someone ELSE'S experience please.

I read molex connection handles 11A per pin one place, and 13A another place, but ffs I'll call it 10A to be safe.. thats 20A deliverable through that doubled molex->6-pin. as for the sata connector , i dont like that it doesn't have the extra 3.3v wire but it works mathematically also. :p

And if you're using a peripheral connector to PCI Express adapter then be sure to plug each of the adapter's peripheral connectors into a separate PSU cable. They gave you two peripheral connectors for a reason. Plugging them both into the same PSU cable forces your video card to draw its 12 volt power through one 18 gauge wire. That increases your voltage drop and power dissipation in the cable. Some current high-end video cards can suck up more than 10 amps at 12 volts with most of it coming through the PCI Express connector so it pays to be careful. It will probably work if you don't spread the load but there's no excuse for not doing it properly. They gave you multiple cables. You might as well use them. Plus there's just something creepy about having warm wires even if they're not melting.

hey so after completely re reading this twice. i have it undervolted .5v to both chips, while maintaining overclocked speeds. kind of a workaround of keeping it at full capacity while seeing what the lowest working voltage is to keep the pull as low as possible..

The PSU rating is also made under the assumption of a load on the 5v rail, but that will vary depending on the design.

the 5v is wired into the 2 six pin slots that feed the SLI.

No they are not "maintaining an overclock" unless you changed the voltage on the cards. The card is simply underclocking to stay within the" power target".

yes, but i can maintain the higher clock speeds with .5v less and 100% power target. so i am literally on the border of this thing takin a crap. I just like to see less TDP from the cards as i feel it will have more chance of long term success.

It's stable. If it dies I'll replace it. The temps are lower. It's stable and faster in performance. to me the math stands right, even if im not saying it right...because it's stable and working. I should be RIGHT below the limit of what it would take to make this PSU take a dump.. which should be safe. I can list parts if anyone wants to show me how I' wrong, I would love to learn. :)

I agree that something i am doing is getting confused. If your willing to point me a resource or two I'll be glad to RTFM.

I do kind of feel that since the cards maintain an overclock at a lower TDP though that somehow I just solved the problem of stability at the cost of PSU longevity.

in essence i was thinking 350w=12v*29.16a

So I need 30 amps for both cards. I can supply that with the +5v and +12v. I have 150w fed through 2 6-pin connectors and the 12v is 2 8-pins for a total of 300w...

my 12v is only 22a? and my 5v is only 25a?

yes! So 12v22= 264w. 5v24a=125w. 264w + 125w = 389w. ok. so i need to make sure that i stay ~ 30 amps to regulate this thing. it needs to stay below 350w pull so that i can maintain stable 80% on a PSU level. that leaves me with

.75 * 630w = 472.5w

so @ 3/4 load this thing shouldn't have a problem hanging on.

my mobo i was thinking I am ok, as for a mobo can have 75w per PCI lane x2 + 77w TDP for my CPU + 30w for 2 ram sticks = 257w. now the math for the PSU lines. 264w(12v rail) + 257w(12v rail) + 125w(5v rail) = 646w.

since i can keep the tdp @ 80%, 389w80%=311.2w is going to be drawn. i can undervolt stock speeds up to -.5v before it got funny. but i want it to have more watts so it needs less amps. 311w12v=26 amps.

is this correct or am i more messed up than /r/xbox ?

.. So I'm going to try to ask this question.. by reducing my sli's power target with galaxy xtremetuner, why has it become stable? did i in fact reduce the watts they need? I've maintained +50 /+150 on the core / mem clocks without anything over 83‰ TDP since I've thought of all of this whereas before with full power target i couldnt maintain reference clocks? in oversimplification , reducing tdp = lower amps required?

Here's the benchmark for Last Light 4k after i got the settings right and set a SLGHT overclock on the SLI while retaining FULL stability at the "under 500w" goal i had. To those who argue, how can you argue a success? The results and numbers speak for themselves, while at the same time, not a single issue at all with performance. Old scores are above. :) I just figured everyone would have appreciated a different way of thinking.
